Garmin G3X & GTN-650Xi - Instrument Approach: KMSN RNAV03
Ғылым және технология
Another attempt at a good instrument approach video. This time to KMSN RNAV 03. Let us know what you liked, disliked, or thing we should do different. Skip to 2:00 to get to the approach part.

Nice video! I’m in process of building a Sling 4 with a similar panel, it was helpful to see a full approach to get an idea for how you interact with the Garmin gear. Seems like the only thing Garmin needs to sell us is an autothrottle, then the plane could really fly itself to the minimums!
Great stuff, nice to se the tips from the garmin training videos done for real
Thanks for sharing! It’s a lot to put it all out there for everyone to see. Friendly suggestion, leaning for taxi can be much more aggressive to keep those plugs clean, pull it out until there’s an RPM rise, or if the rise is not noticeable and the engine gets rough, go back in a couple turns just to where it smooths out. Nice to see someone flying their RV and going on so many adventures!

I have pmags and run auto plugs. Have never fouled a single one in 500 hrs :)
First! Nice Video, love the procedure stuff!
Cool, regards from Brazil/Paraguay
Nice. Your panel is very similar to mine. I didn’t think I had enough glass so added an area 660. Just joking. Actually have the area for flying rentals, but it integrates so well with the GTX 345R I decided to add it. Great videos and paint job!
Very nice video.. Thanks for sharing
Great video and nice to see the Garmin avionics in action! Staying at 3000' would have protected your altitude until on the approach track in IMC. It looks like the G5 showed the GP above you at that point and also good distance from Zepud to know that you were still below the slope. Keep the videos coming!

Thanks, I think I'll do that going forward. I can just fly the GP down a half mile further ahead. I believe as long as I was above 2600' between ZUSNA & ZEPUD I was still legal though? aeronav.faa.gov/d-tpp/2005/00245R3.PDF
Very Nice, was riding the rails with you! Thumbs up for the camera man! As a bonus got to learn some of the panel! Small critique, switch to the forward view at minimums...Great video!

Camera woman :) Good idea on view switch.
This is great! I’d like the same in C182
Hi Mr. BFG - I enjoyed video. I didn't understand what you were doing with throttle. Were you looking for a particular speed? Suggestions for future: 1. Smaller inset window showing outside view. 2. Better closeups of the approach charts/PFD/GTN 3. I would like to see how the baro-nav minimum gets entered. 4. I would like to see how TOGA button functions in real time and how GTN and autopilot can work together in missed to go to missed approach point and hold. Especially if multi-step missed like climbing to an altitude, then a turn to missed approach point. Thanks for taking the time. CU Drum

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I was trying to stick inside a speed range on a somewhat gusty day :) I'll Try to cover your requests in an upcoming video and will see what I can do about zoom-ins. It's tough without having a good spot to mount the cameras.
Who cut your panel and who built the harnesses? Nice job
GO MUSKIES!
Awesome plane and panel. Couple panel questions for you. Could you live without the second display, autopilot controller and audio panel? How much load do you think that would add having only the one screen and a 650?

This is a hard question. You can definitely live without them, and do approaches without them. I would not skip the autopilot head. The second display adds significant redundancy, if you are flying IFR you should consider how you'll fly the plane if your PFD bites the dust. You can definitely switch to the G5 but your workload then shoots through the roof :)
Great explaining! I have the exact same panel, but am still learning it’s ways, so apologies in advance for a few questions. 1) I’m unsure when to push the Approach button: when you are cleared by ATC, and before reaching the glide path? Outside the FAF. 🤔. 2) Do you “dial in” the altitude minums for the step down fixes before the GP capture? Also would like to see some close ups of the PFD, the inset window doesn’t really add a lot, but cool non the less...... any other “pearls” appreciated too 🙂

Great questions! I'll answer with how I do it, which is not necessarily the right way :) 1 - I hit the Approach button once cleared for the approach and outside the FAF. 2 - No, the GTN has the altitude constraints for the approach. You just need to set the altitude bug to the lowest assigned altitude in the approach and it will fly the steps for you. Make sure you are in NAV mode and also have VNAV mode activated in the AFCS. Garmin has a good video on this here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eayBlM1pl7LXhrg.html

@@BuildFlyGo Dont forget to put the altitude back to Missed Approach altitude once the GS is captured. This way, in case of a missed approach, you have vertical guidance.
Hi. Great videos. Just wondering why the tower says cleared for the approach maintain vfr.?

I was not on an ifr flight plan as it was not imc.
Love the gear. Can the G3X run with the approach plate track up?
@BuildFlyGo

No, the plate is always north up in the g3x. It’s not overlaid on the chart.
Anyone who watches these videos is into aviation pretty hard. More details, technique, buttonology, shortcuts and general showing off of the Garmin's abilities would be a hit. Thanks!

I was considering doing an additional voice-over describing what I'm clicking but iMovie is starting to be fairly limiting.
I can’t find the plates on my G3x. I have the same setup as you. I see you are on the “WPT” page. What am I missing? I have downloaded everything from Fly Garmin. Thanks

Do you subscribe to plates? Will you be at AirVenture? I can walk you through it at the Garmin booth.

Hey Guil. I am considering building a 9a for my wife and I to travel. I can’t find any around my area. Would love to come and visit sometime this summer if you wouldn’t mind. I’m about 300NM away. I73 thanks!

Why is there a big black square on the PFD map?
@BuildFlyGo
4 жыл бұрын
That's Garmin marking a segment of the chart for which it has no weather data. ADS-B weather updates in sections and if you display weather on the screens it will let you know it's missing data for a section by changing its color cast to a darker tone.
What did your setup cost ?

Everyone's build will be different, I'd point you to vansaircraft.com for kit prices, and the worksheet video for Garmin options.
I look at all that glass and I get stars in my eyes..... I wish I could afford it. But, it's steam gauges for me, unfortunately.
