    There is a huge difference between someone talking discrete system features on the ground or on a sim or kiosk, and seeing you actually running through features in flight. I just purchased an RV-7 with a very similar Garmin setup (one G3X, and no nav-com in my GTN - otherwise same) and your video has done more for me learning this system than all the offline training stuff I've tried. Thanks very much. Would love to see more like this, as Garmin adjusts features with software upgrades.

    Outstanding clarity and detail - Thank you so much! The rotating video transition at 15:41 when you were interrupted was a very classy touch : -) I'm a student pilot, spending a silly amount of time dreaming of my perfect panel and getting to know these devices from you is really a treat. One thing I've been confused by is some pilots say they'd never have their moving-maps set with North up. Why wouldn't you? It's the way we've experienced maps since kindergarten - there must be a reason, but my lack of experience shows here. It was really interesting for me to learn the instrument procedures have to be pushed from the GTN to the G3x, but there was so much more - I'm a new subscriber, off to see what else you've done. Great video.

    That is such an informative video. I am looking to upgrade my stack on my PA32 with the new GNX375. I am looking to put up 2 screens, primary G3x plus G5 and Dynon HDX1100 to the right and the stack to the right of the screens. Stack will include GFC500. Why I am looking at HDX1100 as back up, is for engine monitoring v cost of certified G3x and engine module cost. I already have the probes from my JPI. Other reason, as I do hard IFR I like the idea of an independent GPS in the HDX as a backup for the G3x or 375 in event of failure. I see your AP at the top of the stack like the big iron. My current one is at the bottom.

  • @BuildFlyGo

    @BuildFlyGo

    Hi Peter. The G3X & G5 do not share software, so are a good backup for each other. You should not have a software issue that knocks them both out. Additionally, the G5 provides a backup AHARS on the bus that the G3X screens can use. The GNX should also provide position data (I believe) so with 2 G3X, 1 G5, and the GNX you have 4 independent position sources and 2 attitude sources. You can add a second magnetometer too if you wish but I did not bother. In an emergency, GPS-sourced heading is sufficient. Personally, I would not add the Dynon screen as it adds more complexity, and additional user interface changes which may slow you down during a heavy workload phase of flight. Not to mention you then need to buy separate databases for each, and ensure your IFR-certified position source can output ARINC to two sources at once. It just feels like there may be more down sides than upsides, but to each their own :)

    Your panel is exactly what I want in my Bonanza (don't need the second G3X though) but a very well done explanation. If I may, I would suggest your oil temp is way too low. Your not burning out the moisture etc. at that temp. I don't know how your oil cooler is situated but you can try to block it of some air flow and it should bring your temp up.

    I work at a FBO at KDWH, it’s my first job And I plan to start flight training in the coming months, being a teenager interested in Aviation I’ve been offered rides in peoples planes, so far my favorite has been a 2013 Piper Malibu, My dream plane is tied between two ether a Fully Loaded Piper M350, or a Piper Saratoga or Lance with a GFC 500 above the GTN750 with that stack being flanked by two G3Xs with a G5 left of the left G3x, and putting the altimeter and speedometer in between the GTN/AP stack and the LEFT G3x, And then the G3x on the right would be as close as possible to the GTN stack and a I pad mount to the right of the G3x, That is 60K worth of Avioncs but if I bought a Saratoga or lance I would try to get one with a GTN750 in it. Nice video definitely nice to see the features of the G3x it’s features and UI remind me a lot of the GTN750.

    The G3X itself doesn't have a built-in COM or Audio Panel, so if you want those functions you need to add them. There are remote versions of the two (GMA245r & GTR20) and both the remote and non-remote are controllable via the big G3X screens. Also, you can get more parameters on the left screen if you don't have both comms up there taking up space. You probably use one comm more than the other, so leave that on the left screen. Put the other comm on the right screen only, but at the left end. I find that I rarely use the database tuning from touching the standby frequency -- I'm more likely to tune using the frequencies on the waypoint screen. Next time you're passing by Savannah, come fly with me.

All the weather I showed was from ADS-B. I also have an XM Weather receiver in one of the screens but decided not to renew it after the trial period. The only real benefit of XM is coverage when still on the ground. Once in the air ADS-B picks up pretty quick. I do have XM radio and it's great, I just wish it was available outside North America. Does the aircraft icon appear on the approach plates (on the PFD and/or MFD) during approaches so that you can visually see where you are on the plate, sort of like when displaying plates on the map in ForeFlight? As far as two screens go... on the right screen, move the engine instruments to the right side for starters. Next, on almost all full screen displays, 90% of the good information is in the middle 50% of the screen. So if you go to split screen mode on the right side display, you move that most interesting part closer to you.

    @@BuildFlyGo Sloppy writing on my part. You've already got engine instruments on the left side of the PFD, and that makes it easy to make fine power adjustments and compare to airspeed and vertical speed. Agreed, good show! But on the MFD right screen, those duplicate engine instruments aren't providing any additional information. Worse, they're on the left side of the MFD, closest to the pilot in the left seat, and displacing all that other MFD information away from you. On the MFD, then, move the engine instruments to the far (right) side so that the rest of the information is closer.

The GSU, GTP & GMU should come in the LRU kit, no need to buy them separately. They let me configure it exactly the way I wanted, 2x pmags, AFP FI, 9:1 compression, ceramic-coated cylinders, etc. Additionally, the price was very close so it just made sense. I have two options and one being set up exactly exactly like yours with the two 10.6 inch screens. I plan on doing quite a bit of IFR flying. I don’t really want to run a split screen on the PFD. However my thought is glancing all the way over to the right for the MFD might be distracting and too much head movement and maybe even at an odd angle and far to reach to adjust things. I thought about placing a 7 inch portrait right next to the PFD as my navigation MFD. Thus keeping my scan much closer well having an easier reach.

    There are a few setups like you describe with the smaller display just to the right and I hear they work well. Nice panel - a few questions: Did you consider the GNC 375 instead of 650? Is your EIS configurable on the G3X so for example you could just have CHT/EGT page only? How challenging was it to replace your fuel probs if you could estimate? My ideal EIS in the short term would be EGT/CGT/%HP and Fuel/Fuel Flow -- any thoughts on that given your experiences? I was trying to avoid the 650 from a cost perspective thus the 355/375 idea.

  • @BuildFlyGo

    The 375 was not available when I built the panel. It's a great GPS/Transponder and I'd definitely consider it when the time comes for the next airplane. I'm not sure what you are asking on the EIS page configuration. You can change it around in many ways, could you ask your question differently and I'll try to answer it? There are two fuel sensors in the system, a fuel flow which is in line with the fuel line going between the servo and the distribution block, and a fuel pressure sensor that comes off the pressurized side of the mechanical fuel pump. It was not difficult to install, just part of the regular aircraft plumbing. If you have fuel injection you also need fuel pressure. I believe Oil temp is a required gauge (FAA). Other than that, you basically are describing what's on me EIS page on the left side. Yup, the 375 is a great option if you don't need VOR/ILS.

Already have a 345R Transponder, so just need a slimmed down version of the 650 (only really care about WAAS). Regarding the EIS -- sorry, I was not clear - I'd like to keep my existing MP/RPM gauges (analog) and simply add to the EIS the following in priority order of importance (and cost) : Engine monitor: CHT/EGT & possibly Fuel flow/level/Engine HP% -- but leave everything else as is in analog form -- can that customization be done (meaning leaving out some functionality) -- thanks again.

    If you have a GTX-345R already you don't need the GNX-375 as that includes a transponder. Go with the GNC-355 which is a GPS/COM. The EIS is a single box (GEA-24) so you will have access to all the functionality once that is installed. I believe you can disable some of the gauges in the configuration but if you don't have RPM/MP it won't be able to calculate %power. There would be no cost savings other than the price of the sensors you don't purchase. Personally I'd spend an extra couple hundred bucks and get the MR/RPM sensors ;)

    The G3X autopilot is virtually the same as the GFC-500/GMC-(304/307). The GFC/GMC is really just the head for the servos and provides a little bit of redundancy in case your screen dies, and offers some physical knobs. If you have the G3X autopilot without the head unit you still have almost all (if not all?) the functionality, you just need to use the touchscreen for it.
