She didn't sacrifice Afshan to win the elections, she did it because she cared for that girl. Afshan was the only man in Gangu's life ( apart from Ajay Devgan's character) that treated her right, was pure at heart and the only person she trusted completely. She sacrificed the person she trusted and loved the most for that girl because she knew he would treat her right, with respect. That's what the scene implied, sacrificing her love for the women of Kamathipura. She was willing to do it over and over again for the women who deserved it.

Plus, the connection with the elections was that by finally, totally respectably wedding a daughter of a sex worker off from within the red light district, she pretty much cinched the votes of every sex worker in the area, including Razia's votes. She managed to do the 'unthinkable' within the confines of the society they were a part of. Remember what the old man said? How can a sex worker be a daughter-in-law in our house? It was a HUGE step forward in destigmatising the lives of sex workers' children.

This is based on a true story, obviously some things exaggerated and lot of things left out but Gangubai, in the 50s and early 60s was sold off by her husband, rose to power, fought for the rights of women and prostitutes in the area, won the election and met the first PM of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Well she also did a lot of terrible things and the "good" she did was for the sake of buying love & loyalty from innocent people, & also for the sake of politics Almost all mafia used to do that back in those days & some do it now as well This is one of the reason our politics is filled with criminals & mafias only This movie is worse than Sanju as far as whitewashing the titular character is concerned Her actions might have yielded good results for some people but it's undeniable that she was a despicable human being Her past trauma & misery doesn't justify her actions even though it's understandable why she became the way she was

I'm just saying the movie represented soemthing beautiful and i appreciate it for that. It would have definitely been a better masterpiece if all the facts were placed on the table. So i do agree.

It always irritates me when English subtitles don't get Asian honorifics right. In Hindi, "bhai" means brother not sir. There's a huge difference between the two sentiments. It established their relationship as siblings from the moment she chose to first call him "Rahim bhai" and not "Rahim saahab (sir)". It's the same for Korean movies or dramas, when the subtitles don't translate "hyung/oppa" or "noona/unnie" properly, it's a huge shift in dimension. In India especially, when a woman calls a man bhai or lover, and if they're even a remotely decent person, that word can awaken certain protective sentiments within a man that might have laid dormant for ages.

YES! Someone else who notices these miss translations! I also get all uppity when Korean shows have incorrect translated honorifics. I know we don't really have as elaborate honorifics in English but it would be like if someone said "Yes Mr. President" and it was translated as "Yes Biden" it's just not right! You lose all the intention behind the honorific.

A marriage happening in a brothel is a huge thing, a sort of respect to the prostitution community because marriage is seen as something which only 'respectable women' can do. So gangubai made a marriage happen in that red light district will bring respect for the prostitutes and she will get votes of from those prostitutes.

3:42 that guy pathan really did exist, and people say he really was that generous. If he likes someone for any reason he will provide help with no strings attached. He was the king of bombay underworld before daud came along and messed it all up for everyone

10:32 it is because she was getting a child married and out of the brothel saving her and giving her a better life, that way she would also be seen as a saviour in her community and gain her votes

When Sanjay Leela Bhansali remakes the song, it's not remake it's called rebirth of the song... The artists he hires for song and then directs the visuals is just another

It might be all imagination, but her solo performance in the "Dholida" Song was the one best moment for me in the film.. The way she danced, the way she moved, that according to me was the moment she actually became Gangubai from Ganga.. Sorta like the final run in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.. Liberating...

It's based on a true story. She was a Mafia queen in the kamathipura district. She was known to fight for the rights of the women who worked there. And she never stopped until she won them what they deserved. In kamathipura people still have her portraits in the dhandha ghara, and they often see her as a saviour.

He doesn’t just make her his business partner she runs a brothel where she actually cares about women and he runs alcohol business but is a very just and respectful man they both are not protected by law but are actually doing good for the society in their own way and he makes majority of his earning form the customers of the brothels so it makes perfect sense for her to be the business partner

I love gangubai. Alia Bhatt acting is impeccable. But all things side, the character buildup of Razia bai was missing completely. They tried to tell Razia bai deeds, but that didn't helped much. Razia Bai aka Vijay Raaz has a wild range to offer, but wasted.

She gave up Afshan because she wanted to prove to everyone that a wedding is possible even if the bride is from the red light district, which is what Raziabhai said could not happen. She wins the election only after she made it happen. Also, Jaby, don't you know Vijay Raaz? He's playing the character of Raziabhai.

It is based on a true story. There are certain fictional elements but Lala is a real person and supported Gangubhai all the way through

@@terabaap9103 Its one of the best Indian movies this year. Unless, of course if you prefer childish screenplay, unrealistic constant hamming, ear destroying BGM. Then I am not sure. But if you looking for subtle/realistic acting, an intelligent/realistic story, then this is the movie to go. You won't regret.

Watch bajirao mastani. Its said shang chi scene is inspired from a scene ( bajirao riding horse and sword moving the sword in a particular style)

Why did she marry that girl of to the guy she loves. It's not that she doens't think she make be a wife and all its much more layered then that. 1. She really has to make some significant change so it's seen as change can happen. So getting a girl who is born to a prostitute married off = a good respectful life for her in society. Maybe it's just one girl but it's almost like a major win for all the women in that brothel. For hope 2. That's the only family that's close and may understand their situation to marry that girl it's going to be hard for her to find a guy for that girl elsewhere she has some power and position in that area. 3. It may help the elections in some ways like it'll show people that she wants change and want good change. And there are more brothels in that area only women from her brothel support her this will make sure other women to also support her. 4. She knows he is good guy and will actually take care of that girl and not use her throw her or sell her she doesn't want to risk that with any man and spoil her life. 5. She realises it's not easy for her to actually marry him and have a normal life. It's way harder and she has more important work to get done for her women she can't do this fight. I understand she can fight both but uts like you choose your battles. ( That guys family may feel betrayed since they ki da respect her thye may be like you area prostitute don't you understand it's not possible like some sorta mutual thing ) I hope this helped 😜❤️❤️ Waiting for part 3 😂🌺❤️
