the only reason i miss my laptop compared to the desktop i have now was the 15,6 inch 1440p screen. it was SO sharp like oh my god it was amazing

The fact that it’s only a 10 frame difference with full ray tracing is insane… the fact that you can essentially play games on the go at ultra setting is crazy. I’ve been thinking about getting a 4060 laptop so this definitely bumped my confidence in my buy.

Hey there PC Centric, I have tech problem that keeps persisting and I'm not able to get a fix for it: CPU Fan is not recognised in ASUS BIOS (Using TUF Z790-PLUS), neither Commander Core XT. It won't boot past POST screen even if I tapped on ignore warning. Same thing happens over and over again and I need it to recognise it somehow because I don't have splitter cable and I only want to use iCUE to manage my airflow and RGB

Laptop already comes with a display, keyboard, WiFi, and windows installed. All those have to be bought separately for a desktop therefore making the whole setup potentially hundreds of dollars more expensive. Also with a desktop you’re limited to being at a desk in a chair, with a laptop I can just sit comfortably in bed, way more enjoyable. Not to mention buying a laptop is just significantly easier and quicker than having to build your own desktop.

@@mykindofgaming7345The main reason for a desktop imo is if you want a high performance machine, even the 4090 laptops only perform about as good as the 4070ti desktop but cost a lot of $ so price to performance at the high end for laptops still isn't good but for lower end gpus like 4060 it's perfect.

Not if you have a big TV. It's not that expensive and the whole experience is worth it.

Desktops should be preferred for Heavy users but if you want protability , the 4060 laptops are the Best Value , Great balance of Price Performance Thermals and efficiency , anything upwards ( 4070, 4080, 4090) is more expensive but under perform., anything lower (4050 , 7600s , or 30 series) is not suitable for next gen games . also AV1 encoder is Amazing for Live Streams . My TUF F15 4060 is capable of 1080p 144fps gameplay + 1080p 8000kbps bitrate Single PC streaming, If you want to set it as Dual PC Streaming You can even go for even high quailty 4k 1440p streams.

4080 and 4090 worth the money but 4070 is garbage. 4050 is okay imo but the minimum should be 4060 since it has 8 GB VRAM.

You could definitely overclock the laptop to help bridge that gap somewhat.

Problem with that is the bios in laptops is cheeks. And the CPU in the laptop is already stronger. It’s simply that the desktop is the better of the two in many ways still, mainly because the power limits aren’t constrained like the laptop is.

I have a gaming laptop and i know it will never be as good as my desktop but its so much more versatile i take it with me to work abroad etc and plays more than good enough at 1440p. Its all about lifestyle

my last gaming laptop was a 970m one, just ordered this legion slim 5 with 7840hs and 4060, im so surprised at its price and its capabilities through watching your review of this laptop. my desktop is a 7800x3d and 3080 one, im so glad to be able to get the laptop at a good price, looking forward to game when im away from home.

Just plug your laptop to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse and boom u got a pc, wanna go to someones house and game? Just unplug your laptop from your station and go

also good to note, if u have a laptop and already have a monitor u can easily have a 2 screen set up that looks great!

PC QUESTION FOR ANYONE: bought a Samsung odyssey neo G8 paired up with 3080ti. For some reason when the monitor is set at 240Hz, my pc can’t seem to recognize the monitor when I turn it on. I would have to play around with the display port and turn the pc on/off before the display finally shows up….. but when I have the monitor of 120Hz, my PC have no problem recognizing the monitor during start up….. I have already tried updating the drivers and such. But for some reason it’s an issue during start ups when the monitor is left at 240Hz….. anyone know any fixes?!

Marcus, have you tried to run a dual pc setup or turn a budget build into a capture pc, so you can benchmark the pc's you've built? There's the capture card and use an app called voice meter for audio or ndi and you can benchmark your builds without the risk of losing frames while having to use the computer's/laptop's. This is what I've done. I'm making a video on how to use msi after burner/rivaturner with dual pc audio setup using voice meter. I know you are well capable of doing this. A small investment with a pc for 500 or less is good for a capture pc. 😅

Can I download retro gen games that were for the ps3, games like DragonBall Raging Blast 2, and Skate 3. And can I also use a PS controller to play those games on a gaming laptop, or would I need a gaming pc?

Having purchased my very first gaming laptop nearly 4 years ago now, I am faced with the predicament of buying something completely new as it is starting to stop doing what I bought it to do all that time ago, it sickens me to think how much I spent on it when I could have built a much better system for less money than I spent on my laptop… however as you mentioned, there will ALWAYS be a compromise with laptop vs desktop… I bought the laptop as it was a compromise with my wife, we don’t really have the space for me to have a dedicated gaming rig… so I have made do with my 1660Ti mobile graphics card, although the processor is decent, being an i7-9750h, it allowed me to start playing and streaming at the same time, although I do only have the one screen (that’s where the Twitch mobile app comes into play lol) So my goal for 2024 is to build my own PC, I have started this already by purchasing a case, the Chillblast Fnatic Commando… it was on offer from Box at £19.99… worth every penny :D

@toner8486 Same specs as my laptop. I also have a desktop 4070ti system and the performance difference is huge even with a resolution bump up to 1440p on the desktop. That said the laptop is happily chugging along dealing with Alan Wake 2 and Sons of the forest albeit with a lower quality

Man that must suck having to use the twitch app I’ve never not once used it and had a bug free experience something always breaks whenever I use the mobile app

I used to have gaming laptop, but I never take it anywhere and used it as if it was a PC. So after it breaks, I bought a PC and never looked back. All aspects are better except for portability, size, and the battery.

Even in balanced mood it automatically switches to performance mood while gaming plugged in. So it's not an issue.

I bought a gaming laptop for "portability" a year ago, but It's always plugged into an external monitor 90% of the time. edit: I ended up selling my laptop and building a pc. It was a good decision, but not for my wallet 😅

i got an older 4k oled HP...and at times its down right sad how much nicer the OLED is for content consumption compared to my xiomi VA 34" and LG nano 27". For portability its nice for pve/controller titles, or ARPG lan parties with the boys. Other than that i no longer work on the go so its not used remotely as much as my desktop these days. Returned a poorly executed 3070 zephlyrus for the HP, and that oled panel and nv fast sync is still a pretty good solution for the right titles Fallen order in 4k on med with oled vs 2k maxed out on the desktop and is a hard choice. But DAMN the zephyrus had some nice speakers

I guess your use case is just different, See when I am out of home I don’t need my laptop to go full tilt, but when Im home it’s just two cables that need to be plugged in, but its never connected into an external monitor significantly. Although I do have a desktop pc.

8:52, that's due to the laptop screen being connected to the CPU (the iGPU inside the CPU). So when a frame is done on the GPU, it has to send it back to the CPU. Some video out ports on laptops will be connected directly to the GPU, so if you want to see what that gives, would be greatly appreciated; I would think a laptop generates a frame faster since the connection is closer (and soldered) than a CPU which has slots to deal with.

Some laptops have a mux switch which connects the dGPU to the display circumventing the IGPU

@@Origin_unkn0wn I don't know if the laptop featured in this video has a MUX switch, or advanced Optimus which can do similar. And even if it did, you still have to select the dGPU in the settings menu, which I do not recall seeing the guy do in the video. So I have to be able to explain the latency in some way, and it being due to the iGPU being a bottleneck makes sense.

plus the 4060 laptop is same as the desktop 4060. Check that on youtube. I'm sure he didn't OC the laptop GPU and didn't set it to perf mode, check 1:23 , it's on balanced mode and on balanced mode, it locks the GPU power at 80W(I have the same one) and on performance mode, the power goes up to 115w in most games and increases the perf by 15-20% and this will match the desktop counter part. I did many tests tho and you can also check other channels on KZread and see that the laptop 4060 in some cases outperforms the desktop 4060 because they're the same.

I have one and I am telling you that this guy on the video has no idea how to make a real test on the legion slim 5. check 1:23 , it's not even on performance mode, it's on balanced mode and balanced mode restricts the GPU power to 80w only and performance mode boosts it up to 115W-120W in most games even though it is a 140W 4060 but doesn't go up to 140W. Plus, on Lenovo ventage, you can also OC the GPU and set it to dGPU mode in which this guy tested it on Hybrid mode otherwise, the laptop 4060 is same as the desktop 4060. You can check reviews on KZread. There are many reviews that prove that they're the same and in some cases the laptop 4060 outperforms the desktop 4060.@@nathanbrown492

Well desktop is better for performance but it’s not as portable so maybe you need it to be portable so that’s why you would go for the laptop if you don’t need portability then I don’t see why you would go for the laptop especially when laptops are usually way more expensive to desktops.

Other than portability, I think the second biggest of gaming laptops is the reduced amount of electricity. Although that's not enough to justify the price difference, even here where electricity costs so much. Maybe some sort of gaming NUC would make more sense as a middle ground, that way you can use a decent keyboard / mouse / monitor without having to duplicate existing hardware.

I think we are very close to the point that we will see parity in the laptop & desktop space with regards to performance. Desktops may retain an edge on upgradability. We are also very close to a full move to ARM-type chips across the board which may further equalize things.

There's also the matter of space. I personally don't mind but I know many people who simply don't want a big hunk of junk taking up so much desk/floor space, even if their laptop doesn't leave the same spot most of the time.

Desktop all day I was pretty new to pc gaming and the first thing I bought before my desktop was a laptop thinking smaller and portable everything you need is built in wrong. Ended up hardly needing the portability then bought a better screen mouse keyboard speakers etc. Also there so loud get crazy hot and you get no where near the same performance.

Yeah if you dont need the portability then desktop is just better in EVERY aspect. But some people dont have a choice. But its nice to see that the gap isnt as wide as it once was in terms or performance

I need to bring my computer to school, and I don’t need a desktop and laptop. So got the Rog G14 with ryzen 9 and 4060. Seems pretty good so far

i own one of those legion slim laptops and man they are amazing. never been happier with a laptop purchase. in rdr2 1440p i cant get the system to get cpu+gpu hotter than 60c. thermals on these new laptops are hella amazing

A Desktop tho is simply better because of its upgradability. CPU might last for years and you can simply upgrade your gpu for a newer one if required by the particular game or program etc. As a content creator i need lots of vram so I am using a 24gb gpu and this does not exist for laptops.

I'm going to upgrade my 7 year old pc soon. Got a 1500 budget, Was going to buy a month ago, But I was told to wait. Not even considered a laptop though

You missed one of the important part. Watts. That's not slightly different. Laptop usage on full load is 150-165W while the pc and monitor around 400-550W. I think is also relevant to the buyer

10% gain to desktop, with 4 to 5x the weight, and like 0 portability. I vote gaming laptop myself. I went with RTX 4070 Sagar, with 64gb ram, and 13900Hx cpu. As a road warrior, its epic. Home, office, or the hotel, the laptop certainly has some huge perks.

Recently saw a deal on acer nitro with rtx 4060 and i5 12450h, 16 gb ddr5 ram, 512 ssd for 830 usd, that 1400 usd for slim 5i feels like a scam to me

IMO - a nice gaming desktop, a ultrabook of your choice (Asus zenbook is a great option) and a ROG Ally, Make a pretty sweet combo

With energy prices going mad, power consumption should be included in this comparison. From 1997 until 2011 I've been using desktops, and from 2007 until today I've been using laptops. I needed a laptop for portability as I was doing a lot of travelling plus university and my space was limited. Now I don't need that anymore but the world has changed so much I like having more space and I still use a laptop for gaming and a laptop for work. The gap in both price and performance is almost closed and your upgradability argument is logical but in practice you will need to replace almost everything for a big upgrade. The only reasons to build a desktop PC nowadays are for high end gaming, very low budget gaming (consoles might make more sense there) or because it looks cool. Also the noise is a problem, but headphones are much better than speakers... So not a problem!.

I travel around the city a lot, sleeping at 3 conpletely different locations, my office, my house and my girlfriend's house. It's a no brainer for me, i can work while traveling and play while travelling

I did notice the desktop had an i5 while the laptop was i7. I’m pretty sure that makes a huge difference in performance. If the desktop were i7, there wouldn’t be any comparison I don’t think.

the 4060 laptop is same as the desktop 4060. Check that on youtube. I'm sure he didn't OC the laptop GPU and didn't set it to perf mode, check 1:23 , it's on balanced mode and on balanced mode, it locks the GPU power at 80W(I have the same one) and on performance mode, the power goes up to 115w in most games and increases the perf by 15-20% and this will match the desktop counter part. I did many tests tho and you can also check other channels on KZread and see that the laptop 4060 in some cases outperforms the desktop 4060 because they're the same.

you don't know shit then. it applies to all gpus but not 4060. do more research and stop being stupid. watch jarrod and many youtubers on 4060 and they will say the same thng that i said. watch my benchmark on 4060m 140w, temp is below 65c and in some cases below 60c on my legion and in some cases it outperforms the desktop. it's not claim, it's reality. i know ignorant ppl like you always go against reality and talk out of their asses without even doing a lil research so that's okay.

The only things i prefer on desktops is the upgradability and customizability, which makes the cooling much better, and u can choose any CPU and pair it with any GPU based on your budget. With Laptops however u don't have to sit on the same chair for hours, if u had a power cut the battery is there to hook u up and if u needed that laptop somewhere else, u can just put it in a bag. if i had the money i would personally get both.

You're the first one to bring up cooling. Small fan in a laptop can't compare to liquid cooling in tower. This could effect room temperature, but laptops do use a third of power.

Laptop if you don't have a dedicated monitor and plan on plugging your desktop into your TV.

I would love to move from console to pc gaming and i would love to build my own the biggest problem for me is what do i do when i am finished what do i keep what do i stay away from how do i update drivers and so on there are sooo many setting options on a pc it's actually scary

Desktop more fun 😎 keep upgrading. Laptop I just wish for longer battery hours. Desktop can be cheaper. Now is the age of Handheld gaming PC, if all you do is gaming get one. Or wait for Nintendo Switch 2 or even further down the line hopefully a Portable PS5/PS4 handheld gaming console. Not sure why Sony is reluctant.

Sadly playing total war using controllers is problematic.

What went from my msi 3070 laptop to my build which is a 7800x3d and 7800xt. My laptop could barely run call of duty and had constant stutters in apex at 1080 with low settings and now the games don’t even feel the same. I will never get a laptop again. I only bought it during covid because I got that laptop when it came out and it was about the same price as a gpu for a desktop lmao. But it did open me up to building a better system then I would have at the time I bought the laptop so I’m happy with the outcome

I have a 3070 blade. Not stuttering issues at all at 1080p can even do 1440 on halo infinite. Maybe the amd ryzen cpu makes a big difference.

Frankly that sounds like you had real driver issues. A Thinkpad could run those games with the correct configs, a 3070 has really no reason not to be able to do so.

If I had a bigger apartment and an actual desk, then yes desktop all the way. I would even start building again. But unfortunately my desk is my kitchen table so my woman can watch her shows while i game on my Alienware laptop

2:40 These days ? Swappable RAM & storage has always been a thing. Sure some are easy to open, but with soldered RAM and updgradeable gpus and cpus being abandonned by manufacturers, i'd say we are regressing !

I had 4090 desktop for majority of time since its release and sold it after i finished demanding games i wanted to play so i was wasting it on Valorant and TFT. Now i just bought asus tuf 15 with ryzen 5 7535hs and 4060.

laptop, 100% Apart from gaming i also work on this thing and edit stuff. With a PC i really don't want a power outage; and investing in an UPS is really not worth it since you can't afford to cheap out on these things. Having a battery clearly wins. Sure, in time it will degrade and will need to be replaced, but i'd rather deal with that problem when it occurs; if of course the laptops isn't already sold by that time.

Idk if i’ll get jumped but i really think laptops are amazing for games like personally i dont have much space for a huge pc i’m constantly on the move and i dont really care about huge monitors and all that stuff i just need portability

Laptop components suffer from huge airflow restrictions compared to even the smallest ITX chassis' and as a result, their hardware has to be dialed down to reduce thermals which obviously will impact performance. Having said that, I believe I can make a mITX PC for far less than what an equivalent laptop would cost since desktops have so much custom flexibility.

i got an msi sword laptop i7 3050ti in 11/2021 when i got into a motorcycle accident and was stuck in the hospital for 6 months it was my introduction to pc gaming and let me tell you how much i can appreciate being able to enjoy this level gaming in a place where happiness does not exist. Not one problem in the 5k plus gaming hours ive put into it since i bought it, ive recently got a nice monitor for it runs flawlessly. Love this laptop to death its gotten me through so much. I plan on upgrading maybe next year and don't see any reason to go desktop. i like to take my gaming where ever life may take me.

Same here bro. I can’t see my self being stuck to a deck just to play my games. Like I’m at a job. I like to lay on the couch. In my bed and game. But I don’t want to do console. And In my opinion they pretty powerful. Now and days. I don’t see. Why to not get this.

i like both but gaming laptop is more useful as you can move it around and gaming pc too heavy lol so yeah.

Daddy will always pick the desktop, when I'm out and about Im enjoying life. Laptops are portable and just as powerful now, but they're priced too high, parts are not upgradeable suck as cpu/gpu and in some cases storage/ram can't be upgraded as well. Maybe buying them used is a better choice for laptops vs new. 3 years or so the laptop will not not hold its weightike the desktop could I get it, not everyone has the space for a tower, keyboard, mouse, monitor... Etc. A true gamer makes space 😅😂

Idk gaming laptops are only really gaming ready when plugged in and all setup. Otherwise your just using a hotter bulkier laptop usually with less battery life too...

It's not only about portability. It's also about power usage. Laptop should use much less energy with just slightly worse performance? This is always missed in vids like this.

Only an issue because you have the cooling freedom of PC to run higher clocks at lower efficiency. Although most likely you would be able to undervolt and simply run on balanced mode and the power management and usage would be similar.

Every 5 years you just paid for a free upgrade with that money saved😏. Nothing beats being able to game wherever i want. Being confined to a specific section of the house to me, is a big enough thing to consider. I have both, and i honestly don't find myself on my desktop as much as my laptop just because of the quality of life it permits you to have while gaming​@coloreofficial
