I sincerely hope Best Buy totally regrets dropping physical media and slaps themselves silly for doing so.

If it turns out to be a bad business idea, they could always decide to start stocking discs again, couldn't they? I don't think they signed any contract stating that they would never sell movies again.

I remember around the PSP era when GameStop sold everything, even the UMD movies for the PSP and DVDs.
Great move, seeing as almost all console players have a 4k player already. Physical Media is not dying. As long as there is money to be made, companies will put out the products. It may become niche and the hobby will change like vinyl changes over time, but it won't disappear. It's up to the consumers to collectively hold companies to a good standard, and vote with their wallets so that companies don't get away with selling you less for more money. Some call it "nit picking", but that's how companies increase profits. They slowly cut more and more corners, they use AI to "clean up" the grain, they withhold special features to sell you the same movie again down the road, etc. It's never a deal-breaker at any one moment, but over time you end up paying more for a less complete and lazier product.

Too bad physical media is dying. Microsoft already banked on this by putting all their chips into Xbox Game Pass and neglecting exclusive titles. Sony is following suit with Playstation PC. Netflix and streaming services are more popular than ever. People did vote with their wallets. Physical media lost. It's a shame.

What about the next 20 years of films? It's too bad most of them will not make it onto physical media moving forward.
As much as I don't like Gamestop, I approve of this. Gamestops in my area are generally located where there aren't video stores, so I imagine they can recapture some of the lost market without much risk of driving locals out of business. That's assuming this spreads to the part of Canada 🇨🇦 i'm in.
Hey Jeff, Good to see the story we talked about a few days ago. 😎 Good news for us physical media collectors! GameStop had to do something. Because physical media games are fast disappearing. Our Fred Meyers all changed to Smiths Marketplace. Those 20 titles that Gamestop will sell will turn into 30 then 40 and more if we support and buy there. If they can make money, these options will grow.
I really miss MovieStop but this is close enough

When I used to live in Jacksonville we actually had a “MovieStop” right next to a GameStop but they closed a few years ago. Not sure if they were actually owned by the same parent company or not but many I missed that store. Glad to hear GameStop will have something other than Funkos to sell

I am one who's really grateful for the companies that are partnering and making it possible to physically purchase 4kB, BR and reg discs. It brings light, hope and fun to those of us who loves the best way to enjoy home entertainment. I don't even care if it 20 titles. At least they've considered us in some way. Thanks again Jeff for the info. You ROCK Bro.‼️👍👍
Every Fred Meyer I've seen has a dedicated electronics/media section.. they're not just grocery. Think Target, Walmart. So getting movies back in there fits in easily. Going to pick up Dune there when available to start the support on this.

The Fred Meyer I used to shop at 2 years ago had a whole wall of movies in the electronics department.
Heck yea. Gonna make sure to support this and buy a couple discs. What a dream it would be if they'd let us trade 4K's and buy used ones.
Gamestop did sell used DVDs back in the day and stopped a long time ago. I think for GameStop and for physical media, this is a great step to support it more than the Digital media craze. Hope it does well.

Thanks Jeff, much appreciated! Saw Best Buy back out of physical media and it was kinda scary. One of my min reasons for going to Best Buy for the past almost two decades was for PM and the occasional TV upgrade. It’s good to see others step in for collectors. Great video.
Hey Jeff thanks for the info I'm a collector I believe physical media will grow again due to streaming prices great news I already shop at gamestop this bonus for me.👍😃
I didn't see this coming but it might get me to stop in. They really need to become all about physical media and maybe even LAN parties to survive. Be the one mainstream place you can go for physical media.
After years of hearing how physical media is dying or getting more niche, it seems impossible to spin this story in a bad way. The idea that physical media is expanding anywhere, let alone grocery stores, is great news. I think we might actually be on the verge of a physical media revival. I can dream, at least.
One of our Target stores recently added an extension to their movie section. They have multiple end caps and a full aisle of movies now. Not like Walmart....but
Gr8 Update!! Thanks !!

So for the longest time, giant eagle grocery stores in PA used to sell blurays and dvds. Thats where i would get a lot of mine until i could drive since the grocery store was close to where i lived. I dont remember when they stopped selling movies there but its interesting that another grocery store will start selling them now. It was always nice having them that close to where i lived plus i could always check when i had to shop in general.

That's awesome news. I knew part of it cuz I work at Fred Meyer & in Electronics! I was so happy they finally found & made a deal with them. I'm in Alaska & we even got other titles like American Society of Magical Negros & My Adventures With Superman season 1.
Millcreek did the same kind of thing and just got movies into any store they could. It work out really well for them. I stopped by the Fred Meyers near me and talked to the lady there and she was really excited to be getting new releases back in.
On a lighter note, I am now pleased to see that Jeff is being more creative about physical media, I know the race has been long and difficult, and sometimes people get tired of running, but, look one door closes another May open, I think as mechanical beans, we will always want something tangible, something to hold your hand to your own, a piece of something that you earned, people do not like being sold nothing but a semi guarantee. We want that complete guarantee, the fact that it is ours, and we hold it in our hands, we can give it to whoever we want as a gift, And it holds a lot more gratification than something that is virtually sent that could only be viewed. I think companies know this, analog media has become more active in the past 10 years, artist, new and old are selling their albums on vinyl, people want to experience the idea of cassettes again, because that need to see a mechanical wand, an action will always be respected among us, laser disks are still being sold on eBay new and used, literally thousands of laser disks thousands of VHS, thousands hundreds of thousands of records, physical media is more than just a Blu-ray, we need to understand how special tangibility is. And a big yay for the physical media mechanical wonders around the world, shows man’s effort to create the unimaginable.
Thanks Jeff for the great news, that's definitely a win win for us physical media collectors, lose one brick and mortar store and gain another!! 🤜🤛
That’s nice to see that for GameStop!
Gamestop use own MovieStop, there use to be one in Leominster. It was great for buying used movies.
Good. Best Buy can snooze and loose. I'd love to go into a Gamestop to give them my money and business to buy movies at any time.
I noticed that the other day. I'm glad they are again. I hope that they can start selling the boutique releases and not just the standard stuff.
They're going to have to open a new 4k production facility or greatly improve the quality control at the remaining one in Mexico if there's to be any chance of physical picking up steam again, I return every 3rd or 4th film because of factory fresh scratches making the films skip in spots, if that was my first exposure to 4k after streaming, I'd say screw this and go right back to streaming.
Walmart has been my primary online source for purchasing HD/UHD Blu-rays. The more retailers there are the better.
Fred Meyer is more akin to Target. They are a full department store and in the pacific northwest they were the original target before target really got popular. Love Fred Meyer
My Kroger used to sell new movies so will be nice to see them coming back! Hopefully they will have 4k
Yay! This is good news. We need more places to buy physical media in person.
They did this back in 2006 and maybe till 2008/2009. Used Blu-ray’s, but still got some great films at that time ( I worked at GameStop during those times) 😊
My thing is… Will GameStop sell new movies at FULL Price opened?… Like they do Games… We’ll see! Glad they decided to bring back movies again to GameStop!
I started collecting 2weeks ago and love it super happy for this news
Even though I don’t shop at GameStop like I used to, because they decreased their physical media space especially their games, I want to see more blu rays on store shelves! GameStop needs to sell 4K movies since the PS5 and Xbox Series X already plays 4K discs, and I use my PS5 for blu rays!

5:35 , I just had an interesting idea from what Jeff was talking about here about experimenting with the physical media/Blu-ray idea, it would be an it would be a interesting idea if Little television companies, well they’re not so little anymore, but for example, TCL or Hyson started including TV combo sets again, built-in Blu-ray player player on the TV option that could also help boost cells more as when people have their new TVs. They are more inclined to wanna make a purchase for Blu-ray or DVD because they have one built-in into their television already, they don’t need to research or make the extra purchase, I think that would help more than what they’re doing here, at least that bike turned the ties a little bit, this is fine though any step forward is a step that’s good to me.
Yup good news heard about this yesterday 👍
I wish I could be happy about this but GameStop is the absolute last place I would buy my physical games from, so I doubt they'll be a great place to buy movies either. They have a tendency to pre-open "new" items and slap their nasty stickers all over everything, needlessly take the disc out of the case and stick it in a drawer. That is a nightmare for sensitive 4K discs and for collectors who care about their cases not getting blemishes. They also just have terrible business practices in general and I've had mostly just bad experiences any time I've bought anything from them. Maybe there's a small chance they'll just have a standard shelf of sealed movies but you'll still get hassled and upselled by the clerks while you're there. No reason to buy from them over anywhere else.
@kadosho02

I'm kinda curious what price they might set new releases for. Whether it be films or series. And I agree, it would be great if they were sold still wrapped, and unopened. Just pick up, and take it to the check out counter
HOOOOOLD THE LIIIIINE!!!
I'd love to see them sell other physical stuff as well, like cds, which are getting extremely difficult to find even online on big sites like Amazon.
I'm not surprised. The Dillons in my neighborhood has been selling dvds for years now. It was about time they started selling the new format.
Great news! At last there is some positive news about physical media. It would be great Jeff if you could do a video about the film Halloween, in the same way that you recently did for Jaws. Halloween is a great horror film and it's obviously a favourite of yours!

History really does seem to be a cyclical thing. 20 years ago, GameStop sold physical media in a side store called MovieStop before they closed all of their MS stores down and dropped movies the same way Best Buy recently did. I actually still have my movie stop membership card. This was back when they also sold used games for EVERY console generation. Now, here we are, back again with GameStop getting ready to carry movies again. Hopefully this signals a full-on return of MS and eventually, maybe GameStop will see the prophet in, and start dealing with more than just current gen systems and games also. BRING BACK THE GOOD OLD DAYS!
This is great news Gamestop is a frustrating store but I think this selling of movies in their store coud work and keep them in Business longer
I’ll definitely check it out

Hey Jeff. Not sure if you are aware. Salem BullMoose closing end of May and reopening mid/late June in new location in Plaistow!
I just hope Game Stop doesn't overcharge for movies.
Here in the UK most supermarkets answer grocery stores have stopped selling dvds. Fortunately we have HMV stores throughout the UK which deal 100% with physical media such as dvds and vinyl records. They really are fantastic large stores stacked from floor to ceiling with all the latest releases of blu ray and 4k discs. Just popped into my local store in Bath and picked up 'Thelma and Louise' in 4k. I was wondering if in the US you have a similar store which deal solely in dvds?
💎🙌
That’s a great idea.
Curious to see how this plays out. I remember when they sold used movies back in the day and the dumpster fire that was them selling used CDs for a hot second before they were INUNDATED with CDs that no one wanted and then stopped doing it immediately.
i remember when my local GameStop was eb games about 20 years ago and they sold DVDs and it was a good price I think 6 for $25 and 10 for $45 it was something like that
This is great if you live in New York City there’s basically only two targets that sell movies, Barnes & Noble‘s is way over priced and there’s no Walmart.
Thanks for making my comment come true!
Great to see someone acknowledging that there is still a market for physical media! I hope it works out well for them.
The last time I went into GameStop to preorder a game. The guy asked, "don't they have a digital version of this?" And I told him "yeah, but I want the physical copy on my shelf" and he just rolled his eyes. Don't know why someone like that is working in a GameStop. Lol

That would be great news if the closest Game Stop to my house wasn't 100 miles away! lol
I believe Gamestop in US is the equivalent to EB Games here in Australia, hopefully we will see it filter down here in Oz.
Back when the Gamecube came out I wanted one so bad that I ended up trading half of my movie collection at the time to get the new console, kinda regret it but I really had a blast with the GameCube
I'll be willing to purchase 4K movies at Gamestop if they have new movies available. I don't buy anything used. And not a new movie that's been gutted to put the case on display. It has to be factory sealed.
