Gameboy Color Mod 'Drop In' Backlight TFT Screen (HISPEEDIDO)

Ойындар

Finally got around to installing my Gameboy Color Backlight Screen from AliExpress. This is the HISPEEDIDO(?) brand version.
Can be found here:
www.aliexpress.com/item/40003...
This backlight kit requires no soldering or shell trimming. Simply remove the old screen and drop in the new one with the required PCB.

You don't need to put back the gameboy together when testing the screen. You can have it layout opened and only put back the cover shell on to put the batteries. I wouldn't remove the self adhesive tape from where the old screen was. You can reuse it to attach the new screen without doing the cutouts to center it. It requires patience but works fine Also, you don't need to flip-bend the brightness control ribbon. You can wedge it against the IR screen since it has a slight notch. Just need to push in the base of the ribbon towards the front case with something flat. It should retain it's shape. Last thing. If closing up the shell seems tight and not flushed, then it is not installed correctly. Something is misaligned. It should close up fairly well. Those are just some suggestions...

I just like to make sure things are all held in place. I know I can just plug in some AA's with the back of the shell. The adhesive I just wanted to make sure that it was fresh and not going to stop being sticky given the age of gameboys, but yeah can be reused. The brightness control ribbon is perfectly fine how I do it in the video... When I mentioned about the tightness of the screws I personally don't like over-tightening, wasn't so much of an issue of something misaligned. Thanks though

Got mine for the Gameboy Color yesterday. It has two touch sensors. One for adjusting light and other to change the screen to different colors.

Never being fan of IPS screens, the pixel-look seems off, artificial and ghosting is always a thing - TFT to the win! ♥ Ty!

Yeah TFT the way to go for the closest to original GBC feel

I have the HISPEEDICANDO (from eBay, not sure if the same) IPS v2 for GBA and sadly the entire top row of pixels is missing, also, for some games with fast scrolling I can sometimes see kind of vertical "scanlines" (not tearing) when moving (eg. when I sun on Super Mario Advance 4), I am not sure if these things happen on other kits. These problems are not a big deal and hardly noticeable at all, and I would still recommend for the price and all other benefits an IPS screen brings.

I will look into the kit I purchased, see if those issues arise and get back to you! Only problem I find is there isn't really anyway to identify which version of who's kit you have 😂

Iv'e recently purchased the same kit as you. Unfortunately if you pause at 4:28 and compare the text on both lens, it is clear the one that comes with the screen is way off :(. Does anyone know of a lens with more accurate text that fits this backlight kit? Great video! I will be using it as a reference when my kit arrives! :)

@@DhinCardoso I got one on Ebay. The text is straight the only slight difference being the "r" is a little off, although not so noticable. The colours are the exact same as the original :) www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Game-Boy-Color-Colour-Light-Replacement-GLASS-Screen-Lens-GameBoy-GBC-w-Adhesive/274205796006?hash=item3fd7f066a6:g:3QkAAOSwooFeH1Ys ohh and ofcourse it says "light" :)

Nice vid. Why did you pick the smaller IPS screen instead of the other with regular size? I had a dilemma because of cutting housing (transparent housing) but in the end I chose the big one. Can't wait for it to arrive.

With their being so many different ones available I really didn't know which one to go for other than the "latest" which I guess is the smaller screen version. Do you have a link to the one you have purchased? The drop in, no shell trimming is definitely more attractive to me so I don't mind the smaller screen size/using a modified lens. Thanks for the comment!

@@TheRetroStation Sure! Here's a link of the one I bought: a.aliexpress.com/_BTYHoY As I told you previously it is full size, but you hace to trim down some parts of housing like on the GBA mods (in fact is the same screen with different flex ribbon)

@@TheRetroStation No clue, haven't tested that out. I was honestly thinking or replacing it with a toggle button as it would be less finicky. Or removing it all together as the lowest brightness is bright enough for anyone.

I've installed the same screen, although mine was from eBay, and it looks like there is an extra protective plastic layer over the screen itself. I removed the first plastic film when I installed the screen, but when bright solid colors are displayed the screen it's got that weird look that screens have before you peel the plastic film off. There is a layer on the screen itself, but it doesn't come off at all and seems like it's not meant to be removed. Has anyone had this issue, or is it just a characteristic of this type of screen?
