Game Boy Color TFT LCD Kit Install Guide (Easy Walkthrough)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

** Cloud version LCD no longer has a protective film on it. A film is present if you note a clear tab sticking out from the side of the LCD. Otherwise, do not attempt to peal anything off the LCD as this results in removing the polarizer. **
In this video we will take and build a Game Boy Color from scratch, installing one of our TFT LCD display kits. It’s definitely an easy process, so grab a kit from us and give it a go for yourself to see!
Our Game Boy Color TFT Kits can be found on our website:

    The Gameboy modding community is so much fun. I've modified my GBA SP, while possible to do, the hinges ect can make for a lengthy process. When it comes to my GBC, I've only swapped buttons and shells for cosmetic reasons. But I saw this new screen and thought the products are now at the perfect skill level for me to try backliting my console.

    if anyone is reluctant to sacrifice the functionality of the infra red port I've discovered it's not necessary. if you trim the center bar of the three directly under the IR cover you can slip the touch sensor pad slightly in front of it so the sensitive spot will be at the top left of the screen instead of under the IR cover. tried and tested works 100%. the tricky part to this is just having the right blade to do it, and the patience... it took me a whole morning to cleanly remove about a milligram of plastic, but it was worth it.

    I find it so hard to get the fitment right inside the case I got from HHL. The ribbon cables turn the display into a little springboard and force the case (if held closed near the battery) to spring up about 1mm on the top. I can roll the cables a lot to get them more flat without creasing them, but the fitment is still really bad. Not sure if it's my case that has slightly non-standard dimensions or if it's just the nature of having a few rolled over ribbon cables. I suspect the latter, but I'm not sure.

Not sure if I’ve done something wrong or what. Any help would be much appreciated. (EDIT: Disregard. I just fiddled with it a bit and it sorted itself out. I’ll leave this here in case anyone has some actual advice instead of “just mess with it”.)

    @@TheRetroRoadshow absolutely. I actually think it’s meant to be on the wrong side. It still works perfectly fine through the solid plastic and still allows use of the ir light on the left. Actually currently playing Pokémon silver on the gbc I used this screen on. I was concerned at first but after installing it, it does work perfectly in that placement. Just fold the cable so that the sensor sits directly against the plastic at the top of the frame

  • @pacotaco66

    It should turn on with default brightness, then the touch sensor will adjust. So I would check the ribbon cable for damage, and test the screen before you actually install it and close up the Gameboy.

    I have a problem with this, maybe someone reading knows how to fix it. The cloud version has the touch/brightness sensor on the top left of the gameboy, not by the IR. I'm finding it doesn't actually work through the case, so my brightness is set and unchangeable once the case is closed. Does anyone know how to fix that?

  • @notmynormalusername1

    @notmynormalusername1

    3 жыл бұрын

    Figured it out. The ribbon cable for the brightness sensor can be installed upside down and still work - once I flipped it around the correct side of the sensor was facing the outside of the case. Another thing to note is there's a bit of a magic touch to get it to work. If you press too firmly it wont work, a light quick touch is what will activate it reliably. Hope this info helps someone.

    So with tft you dont need to cut anything the frame at all?

  • @Albylion

    @Albylion

    3 жыл бұрын

    With the "drop-in" screens, no. No cutting of the shell is necessary. The TFT screen (vs. the IPS screen) is like a millimeter smaller than the original, so you need to get a smaller lens like he did or you'll have a tiny gap showing between the sides of the screen and the black of the lens (cover).

    Same, those spacers are definitely 3d printed. I improvised by using the included adhesive-backed foam cut to size, as it looks to not be used in this tutorial. I also didn't have double-sided tape. Luckily, a bit of double-sided is included as excess in the center of the lens.
