In my opinion you are the best retro gaming channel on the platform😃

For anyone wanting the frontlight but better- use LOCA. It’s a special adhesive that will get rid of the air gap between the light and the screen and make it look clearer

Elliot, Applying LoCa would've greatly improved light diffusion by removing the air gap between the light diffuser and the screen. I'd be curious to see you make a video about that method.

I'm glad you did a video on this. Even though there are other options I do like the thought of keeping the original aspect ratio and especially keeping the original size screen protector.

The final product .... wasn't worth it That looks like it washed out the color

you can apply loca glue on the screen. since there is no air between the layers, the colors are better.

eBay offers one with a simple switch that goes in the battery compartment to turn on and off the backlight. It really finishes off this mod

I really don't understand how the retro gaming community at large will insist on playing home consoles on CRT but balk at frontlights or even unlit OEM handheld screens. For me the IPS kits kill some of the charm of these old systems by making the colours too vibrant, the pixels too sharp and the subpixels too tiny. I like being able to see the subpixels on my SP, and the front light is easy on the eyes in the dark (not to mention easy on the monster battery I've added, not prone to ghosting-I could go on). Not to mention, you can't see shit on a backlit screen in the sun.

Congratulations you turned my wife into a KZread widow , just smashed your whole library in about 2 days when home from work lol wicked stuff , found an restored a gbc off of Ebay coz of you. Top stuff man 😄👍

I miss those old displays. Maybe not this particular implementation of it but several PocketPC handhelds also had them (with backlight). Didn't matter how bright it was outside, you could always very clearly see what was on the screen. Forget about that with modern stuff :P

Elliot, did you know about the "loca" glue to the screen? Supposedly helps with the cloudiness of the screen. For this reason I opt out of the front light. You make me change my mind. I'll go for it! Thanks

You sure there's not plastic layer over the light that had to be removed? xP Also, my OCD kinda acted up in the end with the screen int he gameboy >_

Pretty happy how it turned out? Um its all blurry and fuzzy. Ive done frontlit kits before using loca glue and even so its just not beautiful to the eyes.

It’s also worth mentioning the battery. The modern LCD’s absolutely nuke the battery down from 30 to a measly 8. This front light is way more effecient, especially if you don’t have a rechargeable mod.

Thanks for the video as always! But I think for the money it made the GBC worse than it was. If I couldn't afford the proper solution, I'd stick with the Vanilla GBC, like I played it in the 90s There's my pink GB Pocket lying around... it's very worn down and yellowed. It definitve needs a nice clean and a new screen lense, I think retrobright will not work on pink.

You definitely should have used loca on the front light

I had the same one as a kid

its going ok thanks

If you put it on with loca it gets rid of that cloudiness

Try putting LOCA glue in between the frontlight and the screen that may reduce the issue of the cloudy look slightly maybe another video there for you too.

Hi Elliot im from ecuador, recently i've bought a gb color and modded with a sp frontlight, but i have a problem, the down button doesnt work unless its heated with an solder when it gets cold doesnt work anymore, can u please help me? It can be fixed

Damn, I was actually gonna look into buying this. But, seeing that it requires soldering, I can't really do it. Drop in screens are way more expensive.

Do you have any input with Merch For All in the States? Ordered a hat and a shirt October 20th, mistakenly deleted the email and wanted to know the status of the order. I seriously doubt it, you'd have to solder jumper wires for every trace that broke, and there are a lot, and they are pretty small.

Someone should sell these ready to go

Next time you do a frontlight mod, use LOCA, your final product will look a lot less washed out

Where do you order the gameboys?

I adored my Game Boy Color and put probably thousands of hours into it. But it's just not enjoyable to go back to. I love the games still, but I want them on my Switch. Call me spoiled by modern tech, but I just am. Going back to the tiny screen, low brightness or no brightness of old hand helds is just not appealing anymore. I'm really interested in that Analogue Pocket Game Boy Clone.

You forgot to add pics between the screen and front light so you don’t get that washed out look. Without it it looks pretty bad imo
