CGS 2.45" Game Boy Color Backlight Kit
Ойындар
This is the new 2.45" version of the Game Boy Color backlight kit from Cloud Game Store. This kit is functionally very similar to the current 2.6" version but with a slightly smaller LCD. The benefit of the smaller LCD is that this kit is literally drop in for console shells so no trimming of the LCD area needs to be done and the stock lenses work as well.
The kit does offer a few new features though, including a pixel grid emulation mode and a black and white color filter, and built in memory to retain the most recent display mode and brightness settings upon reboots. Unlike the 2.6" version of the kit, the 2.45" version only offers one pixel grid mode.
Kit can be found here: retrogamerepairshop.com/produ...
I highly recommend one of these shells with these kits: retrogamerepairshop.com/produ...
Tangentially, these new cart shells should match these console shells if you want to reshell some of your games or flashcarts to match: retrogamerepairshop.com/colle...

Thanks for testing all the new kits. Always looking forward to another video. I don't have one yet but I'd also prefer the laminated kit. However, I usually miss the option to turn back the colors, because GBC games were not designed with backlight and vibrant LCDs in mind. Infact I think most of the games look over-saturated on these modern displays. Some emulators also provide an option to remedy that.
I only completed a 2.2" install 3 months ago - I guess I'm getting this kit now to mod my other GBC :) Thank you for the review. All the information I need to confirm that I'll enjoy this kit.
Just completed this mod in like 20 mins, great tutorial! Super easy mod and works great!!
Thanks for the GB wiki, I recently got interested in reviving my GBC and it comes super handy
... just plain beautiful!
Great job! Looks amazing! 🔥🔥🔥
Yeah I do like the laminated Q5, but that gold lettering looks really nice.
May try this one out, I have a rare-ish shell I don't want to cut so it kind of limits which one I can pick. Seems pretty good though, I don't mind TFT viewing angles tbh.
Can I use this with a non-specialized lens provided I don't care about adjusting brightness? I have a Game Boy Horror one I want to use with this.,
Do you know if there's a way to adjust the vertical position of the display? When powered on you can tell ithe output is being positioned via something on the included board, my problem is mine is too far vertical by like 4 or five rows of pixels. I can see the whole screen with a bit of a tilt but it's a bit too much. Kinda a bummer considering the install says to push it all the way up and into the corner.
@makho
Жыл бұрын
To my knowledge, no, adjustment like that is not available for this kit. You'd have to physically move the LCD (though the I don't really recommend it if you used any adhesives).
Hey thank you so much for this video! I'm new to soldering and GBC modding and this vid was unbelievably helpful in getting this backlit screen installed. I know this vid is a year old already and this comment is probably a long-shot, but after following your lead and soldering the wire to the C pin on the power switch, the screen worked perfectly for a few hours, then after sitting unplayed overnight when I turned it on I started having issues with the screen flickering. Do you think that's a soldering issue or maybe something wrong with the touch pad?

Check other batteries or rechargeable batteries. This screen consumes more power than the original screen.
Couple quesitons- at 17:22 Do you need to use the the white paper adhesive? I placed mine in a shell only to want to place it in another later. And at 23:54, I can't really see but do you put the spacer flat face down? or you you press it against the wall (toward the LED)
@makho

1) It's just pre-cut adhesive. You can use whatever you want, you'll just have to cut it yourself next time. Good luck though because typically the adhesive is intended to be permanent. 2) Flat, yes.
How visible is the screen in the sun compared to a Q5 for example? As a weirdo who not only plays her gameboys but plays them outside sometimes.
@MoswenMedia

As someone who recently took his Gameboy camping, for me the Q5 in sunlight was fine. Im sure a TN display would probably be a little better, but I couldn't complain about the Q5. That being said it might not be the best for you, thats just my experience.
just to clarify, the OEM size lens will work for this kit? I realize there's a small size difference but the viewing area is the same? wanted to make sure bc I thought you used an OEM sized one in the vid. wiki says custom lens required. sorry for the confusion
@makho

oops it should not require a custom lens. 2.45" works with stock. I must have just copy/pasted the line from the 2.6" kit and forgot to change that.
Hey makho, these shells look amazing - do you think it'd be an easy-ish trim to get them ready for the laminated funnyplaying kits? Sry if you discussed that and i missed it in the vid.

Like, have you thought of doing an updated comparison between all the different screen kits currently available for, let's say, the GBC? Keep rocking, your videos are kinda awesome!

Hello. This is the best 2.45 inch screen for Game Boy Color? Are there any newer and better original size screens for gbc?
That old 2.2 inch thing you no longer recommend still has a niche use in my eyes. Its the best gbc for camping. As it has decent visibility in both sun and dark! Similar use case for me as an unmodded ags 001. Like otherwise, stock is best for sun, and Q5 for indoors/darkness absolutely. But i wanna pack light as possible if camping.

but functionally an AGS-001 is the better console, like you just said. It even gets better battery life than a modded GBC and much smaller too. Your example doesn't work as well as you think it does
@Otigyrum
2 жыл бұрын
@@makho I agree with you that my example is weak and I want to add that my example isn't really a promotion to go buy the old kit. It stands more as my rationale for why I don't think I'd bother swapping out the kit in my TFT gbc. With my current backpacking gear, most of it runs off AAs anyway so there's a strong convenience there to just extend that supply to my handheld of choice. Bringing more batteries for the handheld adds redundancy for my other stuff! If you can recommend an AGB kit that looks decent in most light conditions (without having to crank the brightness to max) that would be perfection for me. I bring my AGS-001 if I am currently playing through an advance title, if it dies I can accept it's dead the rest of the trip. I only will pack one game per backpacking trip so that really is the deciding factor for what I bring with. For those who camp with a massive power bank and/or a solar rig, none of the above matters. You can pack a switch at that point if you like. But I figured you might get a kick that someone has a stupidly niche use for an otherwise completely obsolete kit.

@@makho I’ll use the new stuff! I was just thinking that the screen would be closer to the lens with the old stuff since the new adhesive is a bit thicker, but it’s like half a millimetre so I doubt it makes much of a difference! Haha
Do you need to do any Shell Trimming if you're using a standard shell from 1998? And you mentioned you used the wrong lens for a 2.45 screen. What lens size did you use?
@swierzbokij
Жыл бұрын
You absolutely don't need to cut anything. This screen works perfectly with the original shell and original lens.
@makho
Жыл бұрын
There are multiple sizes of backlight kits. Smaller (2.2"), OEM (2.4"), and Larger (2.6"). The only difference is the size (and potentially location) of the cutout for the screen. This kit uses OEM size lenses.
I tried using this kit with a brand new replacement shell (the non trimmed versions) from Handheld Legend, but the stop block that's included isn't holding the screen in place at all. there's too much space so it moves around in the screen frame. what do i do?

How's the plastic around the buttons on the front shell? I noticed a problem on clear shells where the clearness goes opaque/white once you fasten the shell up
@makho

That's only an issue if you overtighten your screws. It's plastic, the torque spec is "snug". If your screwdriver is camming out, you're doing it wrong.
@cidkramer
2 жыл бұрын
@@makho I haven't had an issue until I ordered a clear gameboy light shell. Only the a and b button areas were affected. I normally don't go to strip screws, so it's the normal amount of torque I tend to apply for ang shell. New shells don't seem to be too bad for making new threads in.. but maybe on my replacement I'll go ahead and pre screw it before putting in the motherboard.

I just did the mod myself (went really smooth aside from having to reconnect the speaker but those wires sucked anyway so I just swapped em), and I can hardly even tell it's TN. If I didn't know beforehand I'd say it's IPS. I don't see any screen wash out at all even holding it almost perpendicular, it looks really nice in person. I recapped it and changed the ports at the same time, the display install only takes a few secs really. I forgot about the pixel grid things tho and wondered why my screen suddenly looked worse when I rested my index finger on top lol. The pixel grid mode really does not look great. Honestly I think it's relatively comparable to other IPS screens I've seen. In the int scaling mode it's honestly kinda hard to hold it at a bad viewing angle. You might lose the left or right column of pixels depending on the angle you hold it at but I think it looks pretty good tbh. My kit seemed to be missing the adhesive for the touch ribbon but it holds itself in the top fine so it's not a huge deal.
This definitely need a battery mod then.. cus I mean 200mAh 😅
