    For anyone trying to get the battery monitor to work. You need to run a wire from BATT on the video board to the Positive battery terminal. You also need to run a wire from the GND on the video board to the Negative battery terminal.

    I literally got this LCD in the post 2 days after your video! Agree its amazing and the best GBC screen so far. I didn't wire up the OSD buttons yet, but the touch sensors are starting to annoy me, so its on my ToDo list. If i had seen your video first before putting my order in, I think I'd have gone for a non transparent shell as i don't like seeing the screen stick out below the "Lens" area. As always, I appreciate your videos and insight on battery life etc.

    That screen size and the colors of the IPS screen are absolutely gorgeous. While I do appreciate the smaller transflective display kit, I really wouldn't be against one of these. If only transflectives were more popular or advanced, we could probably achieve a better mixture of both, but that's just wishful thinking on my part. And yes, I also use the IR port on the GBC. Just for Mystery Gift. Good to know it's rather easy to just place those sensors out of the way.

    On Saturday I installed a Q5 OSD screen. Maybe it's a new version but the rechargeable AA battery level indicator works for me. Another functionality that seems new to me is being able to show the battery level by holding down the brightness sensor. Something I liked is that you can save customizable palettes. This plus starting a Game Boy game by pressing left directional + B, is the best combination.

    That's a really cool mod. Seems like it will be good for mods that just need the regular screen lens. As a modder I think I will keep using the v2 IPS kit for my builds since lenes will be easier to get for it since it uses the standard screen size. Plus accessories will work better if you want to put it in a case or something that has a screen cutout. I think I will check this one out tho sometime.

I installed everything fine, but I noticed, that the right side displays a red-ish color instead of blue at a certain angle and figured it was some strain on the screen since after disassambly, this effect was not persistent. I guess this is due to uneven pressure because of the PCB board on the back of the screen. I tried many different things, such as sanding were the screen sits, but i cannot get rid of this effect. Do you have any suggestions what I could do? Would appreciate any suggestion!

    I think I may try to do a Boxy Pixel shell with the Ali-Express OSD GBC kit. I just worry about shorting things because of the shell being metal. I see them working though so maybe I am worrying for nothing. I think I would be better off with plastic buttons VS. brass because they need to be cut. Maybe black pad and maroon buttons.

  • @makho

    @makho

    keep in mind that his shells are not currently compatible with these kits (that may change). My personal opinion is that mixing and matching buttons is a no go. Keep it to plastic in metal or metal in plastic, not metal in metal. That's my preference at least. The shells are anodized and thus non-conductive. They are also only designed to make contact with certain parts of the PCB.

    tried doing the buttons this evening but it was a massive failure. i just couldn't get the solder to adhere to the pads at all. ended up pulling up the copper trace for the A button completely, suspect my iron was way too hot. either that or i was rushing, i'd been at it three hours... i did get it to work at one point, about an hour in, got it so the menu came up on screen but the A and B were doing the same thing so i suspected they'd been soldered together. must have taken it apart and redone the wires 8 times at least before the eventual death of the board. now i've got a buggered gameboy colour and a screen which has its position set all the way to the left, so it's not even usable. oh well, 90 quid down the drain. would be better if there were other pads we could solder to for the buttons.

    for the former, yes, for the latter, also yes but you will lose out on some functionality like the extra brightness levels and being able to change the position of the image on the display. I've pitched the idea to the manufacturer of adding a delay to the OSD trigger so you have to hold the buttons for a half second before the OSD is brought up. There are also mods that add in this feature for you such as this one (where I got the idea in the first place): github.com/orangeglo/GBC-Q5-OSD-Delay Alternatively, you can just uninstall the wires once you've got the mod fully set up.

    Hi Makho, I love your Videos, absolutley phantastic! I have a question to this Mod: I noticed a problem with the sound when I build in the Q5 IPS Kit. This problem does not happen when using batteries, it only happens when using the AC adapter. I tested with the same AC adapter that i use on another unmodded game boy color that i have. It's a GB-515 model which i believe is appropriate to use on gameboy color and pocket. The noise is not perceivable on lower brightness settings but is clearly loud at about 75% and above brightness. When i use headphones, the noise is even louder, and at the maximum brightness it is even unbearable to listen. On my unmodded gbc i don't notice any noise at all. This is unfortunate because i plan to use the GBC only at home so i will use the ac adapter all the time. Do you know why this is happening and if there is any way to get around this? Best regards from Germany

    What does the "color adjust" setting do? The one feature I'm waiting for in one of these kits is the ability to show "correct" colors for GBC games, instead of the raw RGB colors they show that. Most games were designed for the non-RGB, reflective non-lit original screens. Emulators have shaders, the GBAConsolizer and MiSTer GB core also can use color matrices to fix this. Now we only need these kits to do that.

    I've done a couple of clear shell GBCs and the key to using the rotary tool is slow RPMs and use whetstone knife sharpening bits. I used dremel's whetstone drums. They are usually pink or pale orange. You want to reduce melting as much as possible, and this is the best way I found. Definitely stay away from high speed cutters or anything made from metal as they need to be used at high RPM and the game boy will turn into melted chocolate. My exact set up a proxxon that runs below 3000rpm and the drill stand. Not sure if you can get anything with that low an RPM outside of specialist places. A normal dremel with whetstone pieces will still work, but you will have to neaten up some melted burrs. Whetstones are also good for getting a flush result. Hold the tool directly down (if you don't have the dremel stand etc, hold it like a dagger and brace the top with the side of your face. If you go too far down the whetstone will hit the plastic with the flat end and it won't really damage the shell. Also the plastic on clear GBC shells is super easy to polish up and I used a Proxxon Pen Sander with some 800 grit sandpaper (attached to the tool via double sided tape) to neaten it all up and restore complete transparency.
