Best setup ever axis 1201 40 skinny onshore
Final run of the day and what a great feeling run!
Everything aligned besides the 7mins it took to get on foil… wind dropped enough for the swells to start feeling too fast to catch. I think I went into bad technique mode when I realised it was getting late and that if the wind fully dropped, my rescue pump wouldnt save me. I’d be left to paddle home… but… it was fine. I turned the camera off and concentrated on the task of making the run work and for a rear moment ignored the camera.
After all that… I settled into a nice stance and went into cruise control mode. This is what we dream of I think when learning to dw. It was easy and it was sweet. The axis 1201 paired with the 40skinny was the ticket.
Second half of the run I really go into beta spray mode. Looking at the footage the lines I talk about arnt so obvious… but I’ll continue to explain things as I keep making future vids. I think the max lens shows the water better too so many I’ll save the spray for those vids.
Hope you enjoy, feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks for showing the pack down and the on-bump beta. Your stream of consciousness talks of what you’re doing and your thought process has changed the way I’m looking at bumps in my own downwind practice runs. Big ups!

Thank you, excellent. I am exaggerating the thoughts a touch for the sake of a lesson. It is also difficult to cover and verbalise the options real-time as there are so many options to be mentioned… For me personally the riding is far more relaxed than my verbalisation likely comes across. I am normally 95% flowstate which allows my mind to sometimes wander more than I’d like… my personal goal is to be focussed and in the present for the riding. Not for performance but the pure enjoyment of life and not thinking about the future or past. If I can manage it in future vids and remember… I will aim to stick with a smaller idea to be discussed, this one was a bit of a blanket. Thanks again for reaching out🤙

This is an amazing tutorial on how to find and ride the down wind bumps. I'm just starting to get into down winding and seriously struggling to see what I should be doing. Once I get up everything looks the same, I panic and end up running into the back of a wave and coming off foil. This really helped me see what to do in lots of different situations. Keep up the great work!

Yes. Chasing and following the lumps in front of you. I was so concentrating on riding down the lines and looking back that I did not use what was right in front of me. I’ll definitely concentrate on that more.

I am completely amazed that you can get up on the foil with a 2.8m wing in 13 knots. That PPC wing deflates well. And some really nice top end speed.

How about from 9-10kts even with my winging setup! 13kts I’m powered up and cruising. For me it’s the perfect wing… the following day I upwinded with it for a deflate in 30-40kts. It is truly a one wing quiver for me. I just purchased a new one as I’ve had this one for over a year and it’s had a hard life! I put my foil through the canopy and never repaired it… you might be able to spot the hole in the vids. It’s excellent for deflates and easy to handle… I’m trying to think of negatives but I don’t think there are any. Maybe I’d like to remove the Kevlar armour from the wingtips to save the weight and water retention, it’s probably overkill for me… but then the tips do sometimes drag on the beach during handling. Most people around here have a 2.8 in their quiver but they don’t bring them out nearly enough, they wait until it’s blowing 30kts+ Thank for reaching out 🤙

@@bigtone667 yea that makes sense. I forget we all have different attributes and sizes etc. I notice a big effect from having the extra gear weight on me, with a winter wetsuit on and wet wing stuffed in the bag with pump I’m starting to add 10kgs+ When using a dw board that can be the difference of it floating you or sinking… that was a scary lesson one session. I was on a 100L dw board, packed up, piped to my feet to start paddling and my board was under water! I had to have forward propulsion to get to the surface! I didn’t have a pump that day and had to make it work. I did, but boy was it scary and an eye opener. Now I view extra litterage as my good friend. Thanks for reminding me🤙

Really have enjoyed your journey and have learnt so much. Keep up the great work! 6 months into my DW journey, riding Axis 8'6, HM 75 cm, Art Pro 1401, 375p rear and thanks to your inspiration, had my first deflate pack down session today. Had a great session and think this a great way to enjoy DW without the tedious and time-consuming car shuttles. Question: I have been testing and really enjoying the 1201, do you still ride the 1401 or is the 1201 now your light wind foil?

Thanks for the great message, you have given me a gift🤌🤌🤌 The 1401 is still my light wind and spotty wind foil. If I’m ever in doubt about the quality of conditions the 1401 will go on and likely with the 45skinny. The 1201 is a good middle foil in say for example a 3 foil quiver, it doesn’t quite fill in the ends but is great for most everything else. If I may, my advice to you would be to get yourself a skinny and I’d suggest going with the 45. Any of the lager ones will give gains over the 375 but there doesn’t seem to be a draw back to the smaller ones so far for me… but perhaps that is because I rode the 50 for so long and have done some stance work. If you can at least test a skinny, but I’d say just buy one. It will free up your front foils to work more as intended. Especially the 1201 it will become more efficient and feel like a piece of seaweed has fallen off. It might possibly take some getting used to, but I believe it is correct and worth any adjustments needed. Sounds like youre doing great, keep in touch.

Thank you. No shims used. I just purchased a 35skinny… perhaps I’ll need to shim that one, but the way I’ve been going stepping down through the rears, I’m not expecting to need to.

@@downwind_drifter1040 I was guessing you might have tried a negative stabilizer shim, for lower drag (side-effect: less front foot pressure). I'll be interested to see how you like the 35 skinny! Have you played with different fuselage lengths? At least for pitch/pumping a longer fuesalage and smaller stabilizer could have lower drag, but similar feel (side effect = slower yaw-turning). All the parameters are connected. But it seems like you're going about your journey in the right way, and trying to old change one component at a time.

@@griffinbrungraber9498 trying new sizes of fuse are on my mental list, I’m thinking about it but havnt got around to purchasing anything yet. I started with the short fuse, went to ultrashort and dabbled with the crazy short. I would use the crazy short more but my one is non advanced and that style doesn’t interest me currently. I’m thinking as I write, if I go to the crazy I’ll likely get many benefits as I’m so used to the ultrashort now my reactions should be ready for the upgrade. I’m also aware that the shorter fuse will amplify the changes I’m doing with the rear stabiliser… this combo I’m likely not yet ready for. I can imagine the changes in rear that I’m doing fit perfectly for me at the moment due to me being dialled in on my gear, if I add to the changes a shorter fuse as well it might be an overload… It could be hit or miss. I’m not a fan of my gear feeling bad, if I know better. I’m currently going down in stabiliser size for zero performance cost, it’s just seemingly free performance so far. I have not thought to shim negatively for a very long time… as my good friend Jim would say “if this is the answer, what then was the question” What is the current reasoning behind the rear angle? I believe it is set to suit an 80kg rider. That’s about correct for me. If I change that to less lift/pressure I wonder what happens? I’d say the glide gains might be negligible especially if they require more rider inputs, but now I’m curious. Do you have experience with negative shimming with axis? Are there others doing it that you know of? I used to do it with Armstrong to counter the fear of excess lift on bigger days but no one else liked the feel of my setup back then and I wasn’t sure about it.

I’ve really enjoyed following your incremental adjustments through the Axis range. If you don’t mind buying lots of stabilizers, then your approach could be perfect. Just keep dropping skinny stabilizer sizes once per month, to keep reducing drag. I know some people foil without any rear stabilizer (better balance than I have!), so it seems like a good direction to push the envelope. Maybe you’ll make it to the smallest skinny, and then start chopping them down for even less drag? It does seem like drinking the stabilizer changes fewer riding parameters than changing fuselage length. I’ve personally played more with mast lengths than anything else. I haven’t played with stabilizer shims (or mast shims). But I’ve heard most people try them to try adjusting their feel without changing parts. Either trying to lower drag without buying a smaller stabilizer. Or, maybe trying to travel with only one setup, and use it in a wider range of conditions. But maybe swapping stabilizers is optimal, cost/travel-no-object.
