Pure Joy 1201 45 Axis

Dialling in the high aspect axis 1201, onshore cruising at its finest.
Second run of the day, army bay to stanmore
After the previous run on the 1121 45 this one felt super juicy on the 1201.
Basically this is fun cruising at its best on a high aspect foil, the 1201 is quickly becoming a favourite again. This is paired with the 45skinny but is potentially even better with the 40… I wonder what the 35 feels like? Do I need to buy one? Hmm.
I made some timing gains with my takeoffs. I’ve decided that I’ll wait for the best bump for taking off if there’s no time restraints- riding with someone else - here I mention 3 paddles, I was counting full power stokes… not the building speed strokes.
What I now plan to do and have been doing is simply paddle down wind standing on the board until the perfect bump comes along, that just begs to be caught… what’s the difference? Well normally when I stand up on the board I feel an internal timer start, I’m judging myself on how quickly I get on foil… it means often making attempts on sub par bumps. Now I will relax, and so far so good, instant gains.

My 45 comes in today! You're inspiring me to get a DW board, it just looks phenomenal to do this.

Exciting! New gears day! And perhaps a new gears resolution! But do be “gearful” sorry last one, what you wish for… if you are still enjoying winging and such perhaps just keep with it. I should point this out… once you start Downwinding with a paddle nothing else will cut it, except perhaps sup foiling waves and maybe towing waves. I was addicted to winging… but now never go out for a wing except as a tool to get up wind or to test gear, setups or ideas. I would never have believed this but it happened. My girlfriend predicted it too, she knew the paddle would replace winging for me… Downwinding with a paddle truly changes the game, and it’s not easy to learn to play. But if one sticks with it and commits it can be done with some tough days ahead with minor payoffs for a long time. But once learned it can’t be unlearned and is all you might end up doing. I feel that^ is your fair warning. Yes it is phenomenal. Be gearful…

@@downwind_drifter1040 Thank you for the warning. The greatest rush in winging for me is flying down the swell with the wing flagged out. I can only imagine that feeling for 20+minutes with no wing drag.

@@dcharlton07 sounds familiar… I too was the same. If youre up for it get a small travel pump and take it with you, Ppc sell one. Try to do a few deflates to see what it’s like, stay close to land until you get a sense of it. I would engage on some glides and then deflate the leading edge of the wing, a small wing is best. It’s easy to do, I would then just roll the centre strut until the wings are wrapped up. Put it under your arm and continue on. It’s a good first step. If your need to stop you can simply sit down and reinflate, it only takes a min or two. It’s excellent training. There’s a few things that happen when you remove the wing all together, the bump navigation becomes easier… but, you learn a few things, there’s more consequence to coming off foil and this tightens up your games. The biggest thing for good and for bad is the wing assist, you mention wing drag and that is true but it’s also a huge balance aid. It is counterbalancing all your movements during turns and such. If you’ve towed into waves you’ll have an idea. Once there’s no support it’s a very different feeling, that wing drag is keeping you upright without knowing it, like a hand rail. That is the biggest change and why I can no longer wing. Imagine bombing down a hill will a skate board vs a scooter. 🤙🤙🤙

Great video. Grew up on Taka cliff tops great to see similar cliffs in background. Live in Noosa now. Lots of foiling. Your stab and fuse are?

Advanced plus ultra short and 45skinny Noosa seems a fair trade for the whangaparaoa peninsula. Do you get Downwinding conditions there?
