In this review of modern games for vintage systems, I take a look at 3 games. Logjammer and Almost Hero for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and Coffee Crisis for the Sega Genesis. All from Mega Cat Studios. I'm not making any money from this review, but for your convenience, you can buy these games here:

Man, you killed me, lmao.
I think the issue here is with so many games having been made for these platforms, finding a creative new angle for a game , within the platform’s inherent limitations, is going to be really hard to do.

You're better off trying to imitate modern games on retro systems, which will require a lot of experience.

Ojisan642 There was this game called Retro City Rampage which ran on modern PCs and was a homage to console and computer games of the late 80s and early 90s. But then a version of the game was released on a single 3.5" floppy disk, running on DOS and targeting 486 IBM compatibles. It is amazing how much needed to be sacrificed to be able to run on old hardware, even though the game already had "retro" looks. The graphics, animations, sound, content, AI, framerate, world detail and complexity and just about everything to make it run on old hardware and being able to fit it on a 1.2MB diskette.

I was a little disappointed that those games were made, not only for older platform (which is impressive), but also almost as if they've been designed during the same era. It would be more interesting, funny and creative to see some modern references.

Yeah, but you can still do interesting things if you try. Problem is most of these games don't seem to want to try too hard, or they're really obsessed with copying retro style stuff for no apparent reason. There's also the question of creating an impressive game vs creating an 'authentic' one. For instance, I've got a project in mind for a SNES game. The project might be too ambitious, and may never happen, but that's beside the point. The SNES has all this expansion hardware hidden in carts - for practical reasons, you cannot use the 'authentic' chips (like the SA-1 and SuperFX) in a new game... But you can copy the principle. Plus, if you have to create reproduction carts anyway, why not add some upgrades? So one of the things that's plausible is to add an ARM processor. (this is actually something that happened with at least one snes game. The ST018 expansion chip is a 32 bit arm processor running at 21.477 mhz) ARM processors are dirt cheap, so whacking say, a Cortex M0, M1+ or M2 at anything up to 100 mhz or more is no big deal given the need to make custom cartridges anyway... Plus, for the same reason I could create a bank switching implementation on an FPGA - given how hard it is to find 5 volt Eprom or the like in suitable sizes anyway, I'd need this for a bunch of reasons... But at that point I'm building an adapter to use something like flash memory chips... Which can be had for almost nothing in sizes up to about 4 gigabits (eg 512 megabytes) So... OK, fine, I can do all this stuff, but can you really still consider that a SNES game? Yes, the snes was known for hardware expansions, and I have no doubt if there were still officially licensed games being made in 2017 some of them would choose to use very large ROM's (96 megabits+ seems quite likely at a minimum), and using a modern ARM chip as a co-processor would be a no-brainer, and even conceptually fitting into the design intent of the SNES (if you assume it was still actively being developed for in 2017) But think about what that actually means... I'm now throwing a 32 bit processor in there at anything up to 100 mhz, and game ROM in the 128-512 megabyte region, if not more... And sure, that could create an impressive game, but can you really still call that a 'retro' game? At that point you've crammed so much upgrade hardware into a SNES that you've gotten close to turning a 4th gen system into a 5th gen one instead. Granted, none of it goes against the spirit of the system... And you could even justify the absurd ROM size in relation to the never released SNES CD (which was going to have 540 megabyte disks...) But still... It would be akin to the 32x in levels of absurdity. So... Yeah, that's a philosophical point I'm trying to deal with right now, alongside the technical and practical issues of actually making a game on retro hardware at all. So far my attitude has been 'well, for an actual game, where the point is... The game, anything goes. Why stick to artificial constraints if this isn't that difficult to do?' After all, religiously sticking to the original hardware specifications (in view of large numbers of expansion chips in the SNES, what actually constitutes ACTUAL hardware specifications anyway?) makes sense if you're creating a tech demo and trying to prove a point (like for instance The Titan Overdrive demos for Mega Drive did), but for making an actual game? Eh, why limit yourself? But the counter-point of course is if you're going to go vastly beyond the technical limits of what was possible back then, why even develop on retro hardware in the first place? I still can't quite decide the answer...

@KuraIthys Awesome comment on the psychological struggles of developing for retro systems today. I'd just go with "Fuck it, if it's on a Super Famicom, it's on a Super Famicom." Even if you're using an expansion chip, you're still using the original hardware with it. You still need to use the original hardware. A big reason not to use an expansion chip is that it is harder to program for and if you're using a custom expansion, it's harder to test. It's already difficult to program for the original Super NES hardware or a lot of retro systems anyway when compared to many programs that make games on modern systems.
The problem with supporting new games on retro gaming systems is that unless the games are good, they aren't really worth supporting. If you can get an actual retro game for the retro system that is BETTER than the new version, why should the new version be supported other than to support crappy future games for the retro systems?
@shiru8bit

There is also problem that people compare modern creations made by enthusiasts with limited experience and resources in their spare time with masterpieces of the past that were made by pros pushing both HW and themselves way past the limits, having it as their daily job, with loads of money invested. FYI, even first Super Mario Bros game for the NES pushes the system well beyond what it was designed for, let alone later games such as Contra or something. So it simply can't magically happen, modern enthusiasts can't pull a game of comparable quality out of thin air. That's where support comes in play, it you look to the homebrew scene closer, you'll see that games do get better and more complicated with every year, with a major leap in last 2-3 years. So the point is 'to support better future games'.

Your use of the word Retro really bugs me. These are NEW games on OLD systems, the games could be considered retro since they are for old systems. Retro means something new in the style of old. NES Mini is a retro system. Retro Pie is a retro system. Retron is a retro system. Retrospective means looking back at something old. NES/Mega Drive/SNES on the other hand are old/vintage systems. Nothing retro about them.

shiru8bit Those modern enthusiasts have access to FAR better development tools than the original devs, theoretically making it EASIER for them to come up with something interesting despite the platforms' limitations. On the other hand, perhaps because of the laziness afforded by these modern tools they are nothing like the original devs of the big hits who had to be creative geniuses and masters of their craft (there were also many who weren't and who developed tons of crappy games back then for that reason).

These games don't look like finished products, while some of the retro styled PC games exceed the old consoles. That seems more like the way to go. There were a couple of Dreamcast games a few year ago that looked really nice though.

Agree with the cause but these games looked *really* underwhelming. I think these tiles show the mastery it took to make actual amazing games back in the day on these platforms.
Would like to buy your game but it is out of stock... When will it be back in stock? Thx!!
Always impressed with your production quality
I find it great that people continue to develop games on these platforms !
Please keep making those reviews, they are great! I think Coffee Crisis looks pretty good.
Awesome video! I can't wait for the review video on your game.

It´s great that there are still people out there developing games for retro systems. The ones you just reviewed are not that interesting to me, but it still entertained me as every video you put out. Well done!
Good review thanks
........ Your strengths are your subject expertise , and your ability to make it fun . Well done Mate !
Great to see new games for these vintage systems. I hope to see more.
love your setup, reminds me of those 80's computer talk shows lol
Great honesty 8 bit guy!
An excellent point made about the importance of supporting independent developers on retro hardware. Personally, I *do* love seeing peeps create new amazing stuff for retro hardware (heck, 2017 has been an amazing year for the C64 of all things).

Oh, the context was *very* much in the spirit of homebrew development, rather than the C64's commercial lifespan! The C64 scene over the last 3-4 years has been growing in strength (as I've watched since I came back to the community and started my own channel). And it's been great watching it, both from the channel perspective, along with friends in publications like Reset as well :)
Great keep up the good work David
i just love the new intro theme music. is there a longer version of it for sale or free download?
Loving the requirements sticker on your boxes, takes me back :)
Logjammers seems to be a fitting of Windjammers to NES, a Neo Geo Arcade classic many people like. Even the name fits. One really telling sign is the score areas which are the same on WindJammers.
I played these games and got to meet the developers at the GDEX convention in Columbus about a month ago. Sure, these games are a little rough, but the devs are very passionate about retro game development, and they showcased some more recent titles that are more interesting and inventive. Really cool to see them here!
Thank you for reviewing this new old stuff. Always nice to see the home brew community represented.
Awesome! I saw MJR and John Hancock review this!! Nice to hear your thought on these games!!
I love that little Furby sprite!
The "six demon blend" is a parody of the scene from "Big Trouble in Little China" where Egg tells Jack Burton about his "six demon bag".
Love the outro music!
oh my god yes, i was just watching some older videos of you and just saw this pop up!
Thats pretty awesome! I am glad I bought an NES now. Granted it was only a few bucks but still its neat to know new games are coming out for it.
Liked the music from the first 2 games as well!
So cool that people are stil l making new games for these retro beauties today!
Could you do a video explaining your networks? Great video as per usual.
i find it cool that people still make new games for old systems
Looking forward to seeing Metal Jesus review your home brew!!
I think Log Jammers was featured in the movie "The Big Lebowski"
Thank you 8-jam guy
Just a little tip, if ya want to record Stereo audio from the Genesis Model 1, then you can use the headphone out on the genesis, at it actually outputs in stereo from there.
Terrific, a six demon blend. Sensational. What's in it egg? Sumatran, Kona, all that kind of thing!
Yep. I am with you. Those fighting and punching games were just never entertaining to me. I much preferred either strategy or role playing games. The Ultima series being at the top of my list.

Awesome a new 8bitguy
When I was a kid, I wanted to make games for the NES and Genesis. Now, I guess there's still a market for them! OFF TO THE RACES!!!
Appreciate the content, next to making homebrew getting as much YT or other coverage of it is the next most important aspect. Reviews in particular are hard to find, perhaps people think it might be discouraging but any game worth making should get the same scrutiny as original retail games get. If your work is worse than LJN products people need to know. ^_^
Keep up the good work!
Nice box art
Almost Hero just looks like a ROM hack of River City Ransom, rather than a brand-new game. So it _was_ a pretty good-selling game back in the 80s :-) But also probably in violation of Technos' copyright, so not something I'd spend my money on. I did, however buy a copy of Columbus Circle's _8-bit_ _Music_ _Power_ for Famicom.
The Logjammers music really is cool.
Cool vid! I see others are making recommendations for others to review your game. Has anyone thought to tell you to try James Rolfe of Cinemassacre? May not be the type of review that you're going for, but if they did either a James & Mike monday episode or AVGN, it'd be really cool. well, my thought on it anyway.
Thought this was a new lazy game review. Turned out to be a regular game review. Thoroughly enjoyed.
The other element that might also be just as interesting: if you also had a segment where you disassembled the carts to peek at the circuitry used for the carts? IIRC there is some interesting tech/techniques that were used to enable these carts to work?
six demon blend is a "big trouble in little china" reference. In the movie there is a six demon bag that contains wind, fire all that kind of thing.
Wow new beat em up games??? I love them!
Question. Would you review a game made for modern systems with retro mechanics? I'm considering making such a game in the nearer future...
oh hell yeah! new video!
Next time on the 8 bit guy, thousands and thousands of home brew games!
Almost hero reminds me of river city ransom. Love that style.
You should do a video on game breaking glitches in retro video games and how they occur.
Streets Of Rage was the one great beat-em-up that really had satisfying long-term combat with enough depth to make it appealing.
Ah, glorious composite video with interlacing.
These games seems nicely done. I wish to try it myself, though I'm not sure if I can get one to try or make it work... My NES is Japanese type design for PAL TV. If only I can find another antenna jack at my TV...
After seeing "Yinzer" I fired up google and yep, the studio is in our town.
The second game reminded me of James Bond 007 for GB, very neat, I liked that one :)

King Parodije One of the others is The iBook Guy, who used to post videos on this channel until late 2015.
Hello. What do you prefer in games? story line or graphics and why?... If it possible make video about this. thanks ;)
I think a lot of legit indie games in a retro style have been back in style for a while but coding for the old systems really is a niche market that has to be done for a love of it rather than hope of a profit as coding a retro game to play on the steam platform is easily the best option for an indie developer regarding accessibility and costs. With that in mind I do salute people who've sought to make games and when you can produce a cartridge that runs on a 20-30 year old console, it's an achievement!
When your game is released will you be selling a disk image? I use SD2IEC for my C64 games.
Love the vids
Yay, new video!!!
Hey were will your game be available I do not have c64 but Id love to support the project. are you offering pre orders? also have you decided on a price?
Watermelon's Magical Game Factory! They make some great stuff for Genesis.
Coffee crisis doesnt look too bad, goofy kind of game. But I can't wait for the 8bit guy's game. That box alone looks pretty damn amazing.
I was never the biggest fan of these kinds of games either (especially for extended periods of time) but I mean , Streets of Rage!
As someone dabbling in more modern programming (.net, etc.), where would I go about learning how to develop for older platforms, given that I didn't really grow up with anything older than the N64? It might be something I get into later down the line as I become more proficient.
You can see through it, so it's a transparent red case. Translucent things let light through but can't be seen through, like bathroom windows :)
Did you get a new camera? It looks different in a good way.
There's actually a console and PC version of Log Jammers (it's in early access on Steam) and it's really fun! It's way more in depth with the characters and abilities.
Can't wait until your game come out l!
Reminds me of Windjammers for the NeoGeo :o) liked the game a lot
Would like to see new Puzzle Games like Pushover or Clockwiser.
Almost Hero looked like a combination of Double Dragon and River City Ransom to me. It might be a game I'd enjoy. Log Jammers looked like fun. Almost like Super Glove Ball. Coffee Crisis looked the most fun. I will have to check them out for sure. :)
I totally agree when you share your thought about support the developers to keep on making games for those platforms and I am not shy to support them. Coffee Crisis seems like a pretty nice game that would keep me entertained for a while. Well, I have to say the other two titles are a bit "weak" in my opinion when coming from playing games like, "Double Dragon I and II", "Target Renegade", "Human Killing Machine" and similar games on the Commodore 64. Those games really set the standard back in the days so yeah it takes a lot to step up, however still nice! :)
humm, making games to run on a retro system, that actually sounds like something i would enjoy doing one of the great things about revisiting these systems is we can often find ways to provide much more memory/data to these games to make them far more detailed games
When are you going to build that big tub for retro bright?

Vintage games feels so majestic aside of nostalgia.
Development on old platforms really interests me, if possible I'd love to hear about problems that occurred during the development of these games, workarounds to limitations, or even things that could be accomplished today that probably couldn't be done when the console was in its prime (or at least very hard to do then, and is easy to do now). Anyways great video!

For Log Jammers, an obvious workaround to implement a Windjammers clone was to turn the playfield 90 degree. That's not just an arbitrary design choice, that's what the NES HW dictates. It only can display eight 8x8 sprites per one row of TV screen, others will simply disappear. You can make them flicker instead. In horizontal layout, having both players and axe located on the same row is a common sitatation, so it certainly would get over the sprite limit, introducing the disappearing/flickering artifacts. This does not happen with vertical arrangement due to nature of it, things won't go on the same row anymore. NES games actually full of design decisions dictated by HW limitations like this.
@seelad
6 жыл бұрын
Oh that's cool thanks for sharing that, I wasn't aware of the sprite limitation or the reason behind that certain flickering. You mentioned the design decisions being influenced by the hardware limitations, I find the resulting design is often really clever and that's what makes me interested in hearing this kind of stuff.
I had a horror flash game in the making but sadly I didn't finish it. Are flash games considered vintage already? :)
Logjammers seems like a vertical version of Windjammers for NeoGeo. Also Logjammers reminds me of The Big Lebowski, you must be here to fix the cable 😉
Almost hero plays a lot like River City Ransom
Yay more 8bit guy

When I first saw Almost Hero, I was actually reminded of Kung Fu Master, if only they used music reminiscent of that game! Coffee Crisis needs music. I'd like to have seen some DOS, Amiga or CD32 versions. Or even ome Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC or ZX Spectrum versions!! On Cassette!!! With Ocean Loader music on the C64 version!!!! And yes, I have a soft spot for scrolling beat em ups!
