The 8-Bit Guy

The 8-Bit Guy

A computer video series focusing mainly on retro technology from the 80s, 90s and 2000s. However, once or twice a year I'll create something totally "out there." My main goal at this point is to make educational content about retro technology that is interesting and engaging. Some people will be re-living their childhood, while others will be experiencing the technology for the first time.

Atari 800 was my first console/computer... I still have it. I still think it's a beautifully designed machine. Nothing triggers the nostalgia like the little squeak it makes when I open the cartridge door. lol

Hi all! Does anybody knows some software that can convert video to 50 Hz interlaced format and into AVI format? I like the VHS very much, most of my movies are on VHS, and i have an old but perfectly working Funai V-3EE and a few hundreds of cassettes, and sometimes buying more. They are SUPER cheap now, and it's possible to get really good quality cassettes like old BASF, TDK, Hitachi and others from mid to late 80s. I want to record some movies to them, but video files often have a frequency of 60 Hz and my recorder works in PAL (50 Hz). And when i hook up my DVD player with a CD-RW with a movie on it to TV-set, and manually choose PAL in the settings, it produces PAL60Hz. TV-set (old Universum "cube" from the early 90s) can handle it, but the video recorder can not synchronize because it is made for 50 Hz PAL and only for it, and it just records a jumping black and white image with a very fast blink of color in the middle of every "jump". A video drum constantly changes it's speed at that time, because it's trying to catch the synchro signal, and can't do this. I hope that in the big audience of David there is someone who knows some software that converts video to 50 Hz AVI, and works on the Windows XP computer with 512 Mb of RAM. If you know something that, please tell me. And sorry if my English is not so good, i am from Ukraine)

As a kid growing up in the 80s I would have killed for the Sound Sampler, but these cartridges were extremely rare in Europe. I remember I got the Magic Voice cartridge ( which was super lame ).

It always amazes me how these things worked back in the 80s and 90s. After knowing the principal behind it, it only amaze me even more that they can make this kind of tech 30-40 years ago.

The closeups around 16:00 are nice to show that the mask on a CRT can't be considered a "pixel", because the phosphors can be partially lit (e.g., one half is dark, the other half is bright). Which doesn't make sense for digital elements.

Now I'm curious what apple computers we used in the late 80s early 90 for elementary school... And then in Jr high for early to mid 90s. Green screens for both, floppy drives were attached I'm pretty sure, Jr high cases were more black while elementary were that lighter tone. Elementary we learned how to type, and my first gaming experience of Oregon trail. Jr high we were shown them for a week, went from catholic school to public, definitely a more advanced education compared to public. 35 minutes in and none look like what I remember, but some of the monitors do. Oh and high school we had one computer class, full color monitors, a mix of windows 95 and 3.11. Wasn't even a full semester of a class, just a quarter, to learn a small bit of qbasic. Our algebra teacher taught us, I made a dice program on it. Pretty sure most didn't even know how to type, as they didn't have Mavis beacon sessions growing up.

I really wonder what Jim Butterfield would have thought of the X16. I think he would have loved it! Growing up...Jim was EVERYWHERE. He was like the wizard Merlin, always there to help a whole generation of kids quest to master the Commodore computer! Someday, he'll be properly remembered.

I had entered the pre-order for the 400 mini, but canceled it a week later as I was getting a bad vibe. After seeing the problems as reported on AtariAge, I'm glad I did.... I still have my original 800 I bought new in 1983 with the help of a Home Improvement loan :) I am also one of the guys that assembled a working Atari 1450XLwith the modem and Speech Chip. Thank you for all the videos you have produced, I enjoy watching the 8-bit PC reviews / repairs. I'm also the proud owner of the X16 Dev Board #0069 :) Also have 2 C64c's and a C128...

The black bars in Atari 2600 games, often referred to as "comb", were actually due to a bug in the TIA chip. It's triggered by repositioning objects during visible scan lines, effectively writing to strobe registers like RESP0 and RESP1.

The audio was amplified by a single nu-tube gain stage, obviously, which resulted in a 180 degrees phase shift. This is normal, each common cathode / emitter / source gain stage does that.
