    IN A DAY!? Bejesus! I do like the fact that there is a healthy retro homebrew scene out there that old and new folk are appreciating. I'm old skool but showing today's kids that this is how things were back in the 80's and how imagination filled in a chunk of the gaps is a great way to learn about retro tech and gaming Unless there already is, there needs to be a hub for good stuff like this and even programmers, artists, musicians and publishers to pool their resources and efforts and make great retro games.

    That'd have to be more of a sideways port of X2, though, and it might even have to be cut down more towards the VIC level because of having less memory available (depending on machine config and graphics mode). Still, be pretty neat to see that too, and of course it would have to have the name changed.

    And the brackets are only accessible with Alt Gr. So either use keys that are the same for every layout, or have some config files. Maybe presets for the most common layouts. qwerty, qwertz, azerty and so on.

  • @kpanic23

    If you check the pressed key via its scancode, it doesn't matter what keyboard layout you have. It's always the same key on the same position, regardless of what's printed on it or what keyboard driver is loaded. That's the reason why in every other DOS game you have to press 'Z' on a QWERTZ keyboard in order to answer [Y/N] with yes.

    Maybe at the same time, he could collect indications of interest from boxless X2 owners who would be interested in getting an actual box for their game. If that itself reaches 500 (the minimum, I expect, is applied to how many boxes you order _of a particular design,_ not just in total potentially with all different designs, because the press has to have new plates made, or at least be stopped and have new files loaded if it's an all-digital model, for each different design; though possibly you could split the run 50:50, or if ordering 1000 total have 250 of one and 750 of the other?), then a fresh batch can be made of [however many orders x 110%], and the printed boxes shipped out flat for the bidders to build themselves at minimal postage cost.

    Hello, David! I’ve watched your content for years now, and have to say that I intend on fully supporting your project. You’ve always been a great creator with real dedication and follow-through. Both here on KZread, and in your other projects. Your video demonstration and Kickstarter outline shown here today are a perfect example of just how open and transparent you are to your fans and supporters. You broke down all your general figures honestly. In addition you weren’t ashamed to ask for help and input on multiple aspects, and are happy to fairly pa any of your fellow creators who assist you. Lastly, you gave an honest example of how you will be getting paid yourself from profits on the final product. This is the absolute prime example of how to run a business and crowdfunding campaign. I am gladly putting myself up for a deluxe copy when I get home tonight, and hope that this Kickstarter turns into a fantastic success!

    How is the key mapping done? My only concern is about the use of square brackets for selecting between buildings. On my french-canadian keyboard, I need to "ALT+[" and "ALT+]" to reach those characters.... That is if you're capturing ASCII characters as input. Perhaps a menu to choose our own key shortcuts would be a good idea?

  • @mspenrice

    @mspenrice

    6 жыл бұрын

    Freely remappable keys are always a good thing. And really, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle to just capture whatever the user selects straight into the memory locations that would otherwise be occupied by hard-coded ones loaded from disc, from where they would work completely transparently.

    I would expect it's going to be as much of an actual issue as it is for any other game or program that uses those keys for some function. If you're doing it right, then the function should map either to - if it's more reliant on layout and relative positioning - the actual key position regardless of what's on the cap (e.g. for FPSes or most games where you'll keep your hands in a particular position most of the time), or if it's a mnemonic it should be altered on a codemap by codemap basis (e.g. most Windows and serious software shortcuts - including in this case the use of Ctrl + squarebrackets to change font size in word processors, which would need remapping in some regions - and non-positional key commands such as unit grouping and scattering in RTSes). There's only so many common regional codes for DOS, so it shouldn't take too much time. Or of course, the proper way is to just allow free remapping, either via an in-game menu, or a simple text config file.

    I'm not sure how familiar he is with Adlib or PC Speaker, but he (and some of his DA friends like Zabutom and GEM/TOS) should be able to make something pretty amazing with the Tandy chip, given that it's quite similar to the YM2419 that they've all variously made music for both directly, and in simulated form via a sample-tracker (which would also create a route for reusing the Tandy music on a GUS or even a Soundblaster, so long as the host machine was fast enough to handle replaying 4 channels at 16+ khz). It'd also be convertible to e.g. the Game Blaster or Mockingbird cards with very little effort. If we're going to go hunting through the Chiptune community for potential musicians, there are plenty of others who are adept at twisting the Adlib in knots who should be more than capable of making slightly simpler compositions suitable for backing music in a game (where it needs to be non-irritating even after multiple repeats, and leave at least 1 or 2 channels free for SFX), such as (to pluck at the air) Diode Milliampere. PC Speaker wise, I'm less familiar, but I know there's enough sceners who have produced results little short of witchcraft who would probably be up for the challenge. Although really you'd only want a title theme for that and reserve it for effects in-game, having screecher music playing continually throughout would end up really getting on your nerves... The interesting thing with this tactic is that it's likely to end up with three entirely different sets of music for each option... which would be a pretty cool selling point, but also rather inflate the game code and potentially complicate things. It might be better instead to aim for a Lite version of LucasArts iMUSE system, which would have the music defined as notes of various priority levels played on particular logical instruments, plus drivers for each hardware option that would definite patches for each instrument particular to the target's capabilities, and individual approaches to handling cases where there are more notes trying to play than there are actual hardware channels available - e.g. rapidly alternating (tremelo/arpeggio style) between notes of the same priority that may be defining a chord whilst completely ignoring those below a certain priority level. Then again, THAT might end up more complex and requiring more disc space than simply including entirely different soundtracks targeted specifically to certain popular sound hardware options...

    The CD audio version I'd especially love! Perhaps it could work like a PS1 disc (I don't know how old-school CD ROMS worked, but here me out), where the whole game and CD-quality soundtrack are stored on the disc, but then in gameplay it could play the CD quality tunes, and then pop the thing into a car stereo or something and rock out on the way to Albuquerque! EDIT: Yes I am aware CD Rom stuff was a bit later than what he is targeting, but Win95, Win3.1, etc. are compatible with CD's (at least via drivers) and are natively compatible with DOS itself.

  • @SpeedySPCFan

    @SpeedySPCFan

    PS1 CDs with CD audio worked the same way as regular mixed mode CDs for the Sega Saturn, PC, etc etc - Track 1 of the disc is a data track for game information, and Track 2 and onwards are regular CD audio tracks. That's why you could pop it into your car stereo and rock out... though some CD players weren't smart enough to ignore Track 1 (most players will skip it if they see it's labeled as data) and blasted static in your face until you skipped it.

    As I remember back in the days, the problem was more the other way around: the manual would say 'use [ ] to switch weapon' but on a French keyboard it would be on the number keys. However, the keys to press were still at the physical location where the game designers had plan. The only thing was to identify the french character that would send a US square brace. Still perfectly playable. All we need is David to ignore internationalisation and it would be at the same time historically accurate, and just fine for the player (unless dosbox tries to be clever and converts the keyboard layout...)

  • @Hublium

    Antoine is right. Games never check for character input, just for a specific key press. Remember the game saying "Press Y to quit" and you had to press "Z"? So, with a German keyboard you would have to press "Ü" and "+" for "[" and "]". I don't think that Dosbox causes problems in this regard.

    I can agree with this as a Japanese. Japanese (JIS) keyboard is "+" = Shift + ";" key. and There is also "^" on the right of "-". "[" and "]" Has a single key. but Japan's MS-DOS era was a personal computer of its own standard. (PC-9801, etc.) If I play Planet X3 for MS-DOS, I will consider DOSBox etc.

    Andrä Hubl Games that rely on BIOS/DOS keyboard handler depend on the configured locale (aka codepage), but if they have their own keyboard handlers (needed for anything that needs to be able to see multiple keys being pressed at once) then it should depend just on the keycode that the key at that location sends, not on the character it's supposed to have.

I know that even without AI, certain games like Donkey Kong have just about hit their absolute limits in terms of optimised play through. Who knows, maybe that guy who was caught making up all his scores was actually an AI. Maybe that's where they're hiding the AIs like 8 bit guy mentioned in deleted video :^)

I loved coding games on Dos back then. Nice to see you do as well. Coding the sound hardware was always a nightmare, thought. Especially all these soundblaster quirks like with soundblaster pro I had back then. No wonder you want to outsource it. As far as i remember correctly there was a tracker that also supported opl. That'd be cool, as would versions for the Amiga and maybe ST (both of which would be entirely compatible with the Tandy graphics set, and maybe a sympathetically colour-reduced version of the VGA), but unfortunately all three of those plus Mac run on a wholly different system architecture (from the CPU on out) that's pretty much the exact opposite of the x86 IBM PC compatible ecosystem in about as many ways as you can think of. Unless it could be cross-compiled onto the 68000 from the same source code, the game would have to be a complete rewrite, and even then it'd need extensive modification to the graphics library and, ultimately, the sound. (Well, other than the ST's sound chip being a close relative of the Tandy, so it could maybe share some very slightly adjusted code there) ...and particularly, the Mac would need all-new graphics, or at least suffer the existing set being blown up in a possibly haphazard fashion, as it's _never_ had any suitably low-rez modes - not even 320x200, let alone 160x200; its minimum horizontal rez is 512 pixels. It was designed as a break from the old TV-monitor low-rez text-interface world, so your graphics would have to be suitable, at a minimum, for a 512x342 1bpp mono screen (if aiming for Classic compatibility), or 512x384 in 16 colours or greyscales (original LC, Classic Plus/Classic Color), and more likely 640x400 16 greys (the first few portables/books) or 640x480 16 colour. Though almost all colour capable Macs had a 256 colour mode available, so maybe the VGA assets could be reused, either magnified 2x or just with more map visible at once (in both cases with original-size menu and sidebar in 512x384 mode in order to keep roughly the same, or roughly exactly 2x each direction, visible map area). Incidentally, I'll let you play the game of trying to calculate how to uniformly inflate graphics made for 160x200 to a 512x384 screen, without too much distortion, letterboxing or cropping... hint, the horizontal is a lot easier than the vertical... The Apple II is a different kettle versus both of those; at a simplistic level, it's a very close match for the C64 in terms of core hardware. Although it could ultimately be configured for 128kb of RAM, maybe more, the majority of systems have 64k or less, and in any case the graphics probably eat up a decent chunk of the extra. And although it has a very similar (not *quite* the _same_ ) processor to that in the C64, running at essentially the same speed, it lacks the Commodore's graphics acceleration hardware (eg the VIC's sprite engine) and built-in sound hardware (beyond that of a simple beep), and its graphics modes are, on the whole, _just plain weird,_ and on the whole less capable in all but the later and/or most comprehensively expanded examples. So it would be a good target for a (still non-trivial) port of Planet X2, maybe with any spare RAM left over in 128k models being useful for loading larger maps, but I have a feeling X3 would be entirely beyond its reach. And if you were programming a version for that, you may as well also make an Atari 8-bit (& XL, XE, XEGS, maybe even the 5200 somehow...) compatible version. Possibly the IIgs could handle X3, but that's yet another kookily different platform beyond the 68k and the 650x based examples above. Its processor is something used in hardly any other system (the main example I can think of is the SNES) and is a bit of a wacky attempt to extend the 8-bit 650x line to "true" 16-bit status with the minimum of work, so a lot of the unique considerations for programming it read like the opposite of those for programming the 16-bit-CPU-made-to-work-on-an-8-bit-bus 8088 (as used, along with workalike NEC V20s etc, in the "XT class" Tandys and suchlike), but along a different dimensional axis to the oppositeness of the 68000 (which was a 16/32 bit hybrid working on a 16-bit bus, differing from the 8088/8086 in terms of its registers width and how they work/are laid out, memory addressing and indexing, orthogonality of the instruction set, access to the I/O device memory space, etc...). Basically any port of either game for any of those systems would be a whole additional project, and probably additional Kickstarter, all to itself, with rather less possibility for high sales because despite their international popularity none of them (other than the Apple, of which relatively few examples survive today) did anywhere near as well in the US market as the IBM PC/XT and its compatibles, especially the Tandys (which are essentially PCjr clones that then expanded beyond what the parent system provided), and the added trouble of emulating them on current platforms - DOSBox is essentially more of a compatibility layer for running old x86 programs on modern x86/x64 machinery, _including OSX-era Macs,_ whilst all the others (Mac, Apple II & IIgs, Amiga, Ataris...) will require full bore emulators, probably the acquisition of questionably-legal system ROM images, etc...

    This Kickstarter will easily go over 100k! I haven't even pledged yet but i will soon. Congrats David!

    I'm only seeing this now, but I was like WOW when you showed the CGA version. Excellent use of the palette for depth!

    Damn. The custom map option is lready sold out. I would've gladly dropped $300 to recreate my favorite Command and Conqueror: Red Alert 2 map.
