The main reason Peter Sam’s new funnel is rectangular is because the old funnel was kept in place on the model and the new one was simply a brass box that fit over it. They couldn’t do that with an actual Geisel ejector.

Rheneas’s bravery in Gallant Old Engine, particularly when running the line alone when Skarloey was too ill to work, mirrors exactly that on the Talyllyn in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The TR, which was owned by Sir Haydn Jones until his death in 1950, was in a bad state physically and financially after WWII - Talyllyn, which still had its 1863 boiler, was in a decrepit and non-running condition, so Dolgoch (not in a much better state - the railway couldn’t afford overhauls) had to run the line solo, as Rheneas does. I’m sure there was a feeling that if Dolgoch failed, that would be that and the railway would close. When the preservation society took over in 1951 and bought Sir Haydn (the engine) and Edward Thomas from the closed Corris Rly, one of their number owned a workshop and had Edward Thomas overhauled free of charge, so it could work the line and Dolgoch (and later Talyllyn) could be sent away to be overhauled. How closely Awdry mirrored real events in his stories is something that’s always fascinated me about The Railway Series - it’s so much more in-depth than one might expect from a children’s series (especially today).

I feel the books had better moments than the adaptations personally. Because in The Books, plot holes are cleared up, e.g. The Children getting permission to see the engines, so they are not trespassing, and Duncan resting at a station, which makes much more sense, as it is mentioned in the next story that passengers get cross when they don’t stop at stations. The adaptation showing Duncan stopping not at a station is nonsensical, as it is still mentioned that passengers get cross if they stop at the wrong places in the next episode.

3:27 The reason why is because since the Skarloey engines had to be made smaller than the standard gauge engines, the model makers couldn't fit a smoke unit in them as there was only room for the eye mechanisms. It would probably explain why they are often seen pulling a single truck from time to time.

Y'know with the books, Awdry had to explain every little odd inconsistency with how an engine's illustrated in the books. Not knocking Britt Allcroft & staff, but it would be hilarious to see them try and explain all of Rheneas' erroneous appearences in continuity. Lol

I have the perfect solution to that! It’s not Rheneas! It’s actually Jennings, a Mid-Sodor engine that looks a lot like him. I suspect that Jennings was bought by the Skarloey Railway Quarry, which he is now privately owned by.

If engines stop in the wrong places such as viaducts in between stations, passengers then get upset and may not come back, and without any passengers or any other traffic in service, railroads’ business would be broke and close down, and the locomotives would be on the scrap-heap - This was what Rheneas cared about a lot before he went for an overhaul which is why he saved the line fro closure

Apparently, the people who created the CGI characters for HiT/Nitrogen Studios went to the Talyllyn Railway to get the measurements of the engines, but Douglas (the real locomotive that Duncan is based on) was not available at the time, which is why CGI Duncan is so off!

Having rewatched the classic model series, it's likely that some of the changes were made due to budgetary constraints, which meant working with what they had available at the time. Also, it could be that episodes "Steamroller" and "Special Funnel" were intended to be released after "Gallant old engine" (just a guess). Finally, there will always creative differences when making adaptaions (e.g., emphasing that Sodor is a completely different location) and when working with physical models, details like winks aren't easy to include, especially when the models are tiny to ensure everything is to scale.
