I think its a tough heat to score because none of the waves were great and they were both struggling to lay down big turns, but yeah those two turns for the 6.9 didn't even have that much in them, a point better than Gabs 5.8? Probably. You know if watch both JJ's waves a couple of times they are very similar, except the 7 has the vert float in the middle which arguably doesn't add much, so maybe they aren't far apart.
Honestly, if John's first wave was a 7, then the second could have never been a 6.9. Judging seems almost random at this point

Transparency is required in surfing judgment. How in the God's name they keep on going hiding the judges names behind a small flag on screen? Why don't they simply release their names so we can stablished a pattern in their scores and evaluate the job done. That's essencial for the sport. Without it all the fan has the right to raised up their voices against an entity that is pretty much avoiding been held accountable by their own public. And that is just a fair begining. They need been under surveillance with cameras and their audio in the booth should be recorded. The more transparency they delivered, much less fans will be complaining. And the athletes are the ones who will benefit from that the most. They are the ones affected in first. Their mental , all the struggle and even their families. We should never forget we are dealing with lives.

Properly scored, correct outcome. Medina received the highest score of the heat 7.83, nearly 1 point higher than JJF wave which featured a lightning fast gouge in vertical section of the wave, plus a vertical, critical finish and was flying the entire wave - SPEED. JJF last wave featured the BEST TURN OF THE HEAT and a critical, vertical finish and again tons of SPEED. Watch that first turn in slow motion. JJF was not just snapping in the lip, he's flying up to the lip (the steepest part of the wave) and obliterating it. No one in the world is doing these types of turns.

@tonybeatbutcher

I think they should judge it equal, cause some tourstops have left or right waves. So goofys and regulars surf booth handsides and also they are pro's they are considered to surf both sides equally good. But that said I wish Medina won this time cause he's is down in the rankings and John not.
How was Pittar's one turn wave worth two points more than JJF's one turn wave? WSL, if you want us to watch, it's a bare minimum requirement that we should be able to understand the scoring. Two heats in the same round in similar conditions can't have wildly different criteria.

Tivesse terminado a onda poderia aumentado a nota.

I love all the Florence brothers They are so nice and talented.
on average, how much is claim worth? seems to get people through heats
Here we go again 😅
Clearly, it is important that this year the world title goes to another flag. They are afraid, they don't want Medina in Trestles in the top 5, and slowly, the doubtful results will continue until they take him out of the game. And the head judge is from Brazil, oh WSL, how smart you are, it's the perfect plan!
The worst thing about the tour has been that the most part of the events have happened far away from good wave conditions. This have made the judging get more weight than the waves. And the criterias used are questionable, to say the least. For me, it makes all the competition weird. I've seen some people say that Medina's 5 movements wave was overscored because there was no variety, but I remember some 10 points rides and a lot of excellent scores on previous events, specially at Margaret River, where there was a lot o repetition of the same movements. The reason was that, despite variation of movements wasn't nice, sometimes the best thing you can do on a wave is to repeat the most difficult movement, attacking the critical part of the wave with the biggest pressure u can apply. For me that was the thing.. JJ wave had 1 good movement. The second one was a finishing at the foam junction. Didn't seem anything special. But, again, no wave was a good material and those waves really didn't deserve a score over 6. None of them, from both Medina's and JJ. It's has been more a show of weird scoring than a surfing show recently...

Judges make it clear that they do not want Brazilians competing for this year's title. Kelly showed his superiority several years in a row and nothing happened.
I think the fact that one judge gave a 7.2 on JJF's last wave and a 7 on his best wave is proof that something is very wrong with the judging.

Such a shame on the conditions
I think this one was relatively fair. John's 6.9 was definitely better than Medina's 5.83, it was bigger and the turns were better. I think John's 6.9 was close to his 7 cuz his second turn was better, he kicked his tail higher and disengaged his fins and the 3rd turn on his 7 was basic. I’m a fan of both but man, that heat Gabe won.

I'm a Hawaii boy and love John but Gabriel made no mistakes, so there's that.
letting jjf and medina surf these conditions is painful to watch
they underscored john on his best wave then they had to give a lil extra for the last one
WTF ! 6.9 ???
The judging was all over the place, as per usual. Watching it live, I thought Medina should have won (and I'm from Hawaii and love John). Watching it back, John did look good and his waves were a little bigger. By how WSL normally judges, it should have been Medina 100%, but I actually think John deserved that win, by a hair.
What a stunning opening shot. 🤩
E os assaltos continuam a todo vapor.
At this point just make them surf and say who surfed better at the end if your personnel can’t make understandable marks
Bateria equilibrada.
Judging obviously isn't that hard when the keyboard warriors can see the discrepancies. Poor medina got dogged 2 events in a row.
Shame> Again. JJ's last wave was a 6.00.

i agree.
Tá de de sacanagem wsl! Sem comparação essas ondas
PORRA!! 💪💪💪💪🇺🇸 🇺🇲 🇺🇸 🇺🇲
Wow. Two great rivals, very stressful, it was amazing to see John pull off that last wave. The unfixable thing about these contests is, its such a shame to see such skilled big wave athletes to have to compete under the worst wave conditions. Wish events are not planned out but called on where there are the best waves predicted a week before the contest
John John duas manobras e nota 6.90, juízes da WSL vão tomar no meio daquele lugar.
welcome to the john john florence show!!
Good heat for me. Hard to safe small waves
Love to hear the braz rage! 😘🥰
WSL wants to retire Medina. I am not Brazilian but it's very clear that WSL want them out of the competition. Sad for the contest.
That was one turn!!! Boom! 6,90!… They gone retired Medina that way!!

His turns were more late and critical, bringing those snaps/carves back from 2-3 o’clock is insane. Gabby only got to 6 o’clock
Super close. Yet John seems a weight division above & as judges watch the damage on slow motion.

The judges don't have access to slow motion to avoid biased judgment.

@@sambadoFlorence surfing with alot more ferocity & velocity. All others rail work at Margaret's seem timid comparatively. Still an extremely close heat. Condolences Gabriel. A Final in early Rounds
So nice to listen jj speaking how gabe act on a heat..amazing..these things we all know, but coming ditectly from jj is great! Made me laught a lot
Simplesmente não querem um brasileiro campeão.
That heat was eggy from the get go hard to call this wave it's not mu slice of pie need perfect Box for real west ozz feel
Great scoring!
