Michael Bell, who played Duke, is very very aware of this. He’s a funny guy with a shockingly raunchy sense of humor, but he got real serious talking about all the grown men and women who have told him that Duke inspired them to join the military. (Also, being told to “stand up straight, soldier!” in THAT voice was pretty cool.)

@@StormsongK Destro was one of the first mail-in figures after Cobra Commander and Duke. Hasbro wanted a big deal made about him. Like Duke a Cobra Cmdr, Destro went on regular sale later the same year. Except of the personnel card that was cut specifically to fit in the shipping package and was one sided as well, there was no real difference between the Mail-in figures and the regular sales figures. GIJoe was used pretty heavily to sell the toys. many episodes were written and debuted almost specifically to effectively advertise any new toys. This did get them in a lot of trouble and seriously altered how cartoons in the US could approach a very necessary revenue stream, the advertising and sale of toys or other paraphernalia associated with the show. As a result we don't get the variety of shows we used to as only big companies like Disney can afford to bankroll new cartoons, and even then they are seriously budget constrained because if they overtly sell any toys based on the show or movie, then that very slim but extremely vocal subset of social media will lose its collective hivemind.

This week, I found out that Stanford University wants to ban the word "American" because they find it "offensive." Thank GOD I grew up in a time my own country didn't hate itself like it does now under these lunatics in "leadership." My kids will be raised on the stuff I was raised on. 100% AMERICAN, 100% awesome! A major tip of the hat to those Japanese animators who drew a lot of it.
