G and T discuss Jim's Blues - 50th Ann. of Led Zep's first recording with PJ Proby !

Terry and I geek out on the track Jim's Blues from P. J. Proby's Three Week Hero, which was recorded 50 years ago this month. The session was something John Paul Jones already had committed to, before Zeppelin's first album was scheduled for recording, so he decided to invite the newly formed members of LZ to contribute to the session. One track in particular features all four of them playing a prototype of what was to come on the debut album session the following month.
It was recorded at the same studio as well, Olympic in London , and the sound is very similar to I Can't Quit You and other tunes on the first album. This cut features some of Bonzo's signature early style fills and phrasing , and has two grooves....a slow blues and a quick shuffle.

After listening to the track a few times I'm convinced that it's comprised of two seperate takes that have been stiched together. Right before PJ cuts off Jimmy's solo you hear Bonzo move from the ride back to the hi-hat abruptly and the sustain from the ride is gone immediently. At the exact same moment you can hear Jimmy's guitar cut to a seperate phrase if you listen closely. Also I don't know if you have covered it already or not but you should absolutely make a video analyzing that MONSTROUS drum fill Bonzo plays near the very end of the song, it reminds me of a fill he'd play in Heartbreaker during 1971 and 72 and I can't begin to wrap my head around it!

Clem Cattini did session work with PJ Proby, so maybe he was the other drummer. Pretty sure Bonzo just played on "Jim's Blues". Some people think it's Bonham on other tracks, eeehhh I don't think so. Also who wouldn't like to see the rehearsal pic on Gerrard St. WOW. Good stuff guys

Percussioneer Most fans of drums I know love all sorts of styles and players. Personally, I love Levon Helm, Ringo, Reggae drummers, old schools punk/garage drummers like Dennis Thompson and Jerry Nolan. Primitive players like Mo Tucker....unorthodox players like Keith Moon and Elvin...groove drummers like Al Jackson, etc. Plus, Bonham...because his sound and style was so earthy and enjoyable to listen to.

High Number that's awesome man. Of course your taste expands to more that meets the eye, but my point addressed those that suck Bonham's dick to no end. That he is "the greatest", "first to do hand drumming/ continuous triplets" etc. Its cancer that fills the many forums and KZread videos on the internet.

That is true, drumming is an art not a sport. Bonham is one of the greats, and my favourite drummer, but when you get to a certain level of mastery you can't say Drummer-X is better than Drummer-Y.

Thomas Hope I'm actually putting over this channel. This guys (George and Terry) and among us, are diehards. Not fanboys. The idea is that many other other fantastic drummers get flack being compared to Bonham so often it's tragic. Even if Bonham were alive, he would never put himself over. Unless if we are talking about Buddy Rich..
