Hold the stick between the thumb & middle finger not the index finger. Dave Weckl said his career was saved cause he switched to this. More natural bounce with this grip. I got rid of tension in the hand when I switched. I still use the old way for a couple of things but not much.

George, I use Bose Q35 II headphones while playing drums. It has noise cancellation & I know it doesn’t help because it just releases other noise to drown out what’s actually going on outside the headphones, but even when the noise cancelation is off it is not too loud. I want your opinion on if those are good for long term. I play a couple times a week. I have gun range over ears but it kind of hurts my head. What is your opinion on that? Do you think the Bose Q35 II is sufficient to avoid hearing damage?

Been a professional touring and recording drummer for 30 years and my unsolicited advice is 1) wear hearing protection every single time you play (unless you’re on a pad). In my rehearsal room I love the Vic firth cans and on stage I use molded in-ear monitors. Yes they are expensive but if touring is your job it’ll save your life. 2) learn to enjoy warming up as part of practice and as part of your backstage pre-show routine 3) learn to enjoy working out, both a bit of cardio and a bit of resistance training. Good luck out there drummers and thanks for the content George you sound great

Resistance bands helped me loosen up my issue with tendonitis. I know this is a just KZread comment, but I highly recommend getting the ones with handles and putting it around a doorknob and figuring out all the basic exercises it can simulate. Bench press, arm curls etc. can be a great stretch. PT often will utilize them. Swimming as well. Heard you throw in that Roy Haynes stuff on the rim. slick!

Hello George, I often think about the many pioneers in drumming that passed at young age and wonder what influence would they have upon the music today. I regard those past and present artists that have had an impact upon drumming as your peers. Although, I as a drummer cannot do what you do, I appreciate beyond words how a piece like this has the ability to bring us in and carry us along. This happening as you are developing the piece. Yes I hear Art Blakey. I hear Elvin. I hear Tony. I feel groove and time. Purdie has the same ability to play musically for 30 minutes, and the rhythms are methodical and soothing. Thank you for your influence and impact upon drumming.

I wish the engines of my vehicles sounded like that (not that I complain about them:) ). You mentioned two of the most common musician's health issues. Being a care taker and a non professional is the only reason I haven't got that much of tinnitus (yet) but I "married" tendonitis an age ago (on my left hand from guitar) and I have to pay a lot of attention to keep it away over the last many years, most of the times successfully with a few exceptions though. Ian Paice described his partial loss of hearing by saying "but that's just a very small price to to pay for what I have experienced doing this". Superb playing once again George, no visible or audible signs of tendonitis, if nothing else :)

Thank you for posting this. I have had numerous cervical and lumbar surgeries in the past 1.5 years and still have neuropathy in both arms and legs. I want to get back to playing, and this workout is now one I plan to use! Great post!!

Man, 30 minutes with that left foot counting, thats tuff! I get the wrist on left hand and the left finger lately, but nit even sure if its drumming related, but the rims shot might agitate it! Happy healthy playing George!
