I remember watching it on opening night in an almost empty theater. It was FAR from a hit, but it found its audience eventually. Furiosa definitely had a bigger audience...but it was still a fairly empty theater.

NONE of the Max films have ever been box office hits, which people forget. The first Max film made a big profit, but only because its budget was $350k. "The Road Warrior", which is considered the best Max film by many, wasn't even in the top 49 films in '82, box office-wise. It came in at number 50 that year. And "Thunderdome" wasn't even in the top 25 films of '85, either. The series has never done well in theaters and only found mass audiences after theatrical, on home video (which is why all the headlines about "Furiosa" 'bombing' are sort of silly, considering that it's basically performing only a little less than the rest of the Max films have; I'm just hoping the studio keeps it in theaters through the summer, as word-of-mouth is great and they shouldn't pull it until the end of August, at least).

@@redadamearthFirst off, you say NONE of the Max films were box office hits, yet in your very next sentence tell us MM1 actually was a box office hit "only because of its low budget." A hit is a hit buddy, regardless of its production budget. As a matter of fact, MM1 wasn't just a big B.O. profit, it held the Guinness Book of World Records most profitable movie ever made, and held it for two decades with its $100 million at the box office. MM2/The Road Warrior also had huge success at the box office with only a $2 million budget taking in $23 million, ranking it 31st not 49th on that list of yours. Oh, and of course you don't give MM2 credit for doing so well, even though it did not receive a proper release from AIP because they were changing ownership hands at the time. Print ads, commercials and trailers didn't even refer to Max Rockatansky. Good try with punching down at Max's popularity at the box office just so you can pathetically fail at furthering your agenda. No one wants to see these Furiosa types in Mad Max folklore, in a Mad Max saga, or a Mad Max fairytale, etc. If the title of a movie features the nickname Mad Max, we want Mad Max FEATURED prominently, just like in his OG Trilogy - and we want MEL! Not so great of a human, but amazing director and actor and the one and only that can pull off Mad Max. Mr. Miller should have just called his latest two films - The Wasteland: Fury Road and then The Wasteland: Furiosa or something along these lines. This way he has complete freedom to play in the world Max lives in without the constant bait and switch garbage.

Totally agree. Everyone who loved Fury Road needs to see it once, get that first viewing out of the way. Then I think people will enjoy it more over time. It had big shoes to fill. Performance wise/acting - Furiosa was way better IMO. Tom Hardy as Max in Fury road is still just OK for me, he sounds weird and isn't dubbed great in Fury Road. Chris Hemsworth knocks it out of the park in this though. Id go so far to say Dementus is probably the best character we've had in a Mad Max film yet.

Tom Hardy's Max was in a part player in Fury Road, and Theron's Furiosa had more screen time. I think a Mad Max sequel movie focused on the Road Warrior was needed because Furiosa kind of had her movie, and her story arc was done - she was taken from paradise or whatever it's called, enslaved by Immorten Joe, got her revenge, saved the sisters and they all went home. Also we're all bored of prequels, we all know Furiosa and Immorten survives and Dementus no doubt gets stuffed, that is the problem with prequels, their is no jeopardy! Saddest think is we probably won't get a Fury Road sequel now because Furiosa has bombed, and George Miller might be done with the Mad Max saga after this disappointment.

I enjoyed it for the most part. What bugged me was the pacing and the blatant green screen effects. It looked like people were always on a soundstage which was incredibly distracting. Another thing that bugged me was Furiosa has an Australian accent as a little girl but when she turns into Anya Taylor-Joy, she instantly has Charlize Theron’s American accent. I never understood why that happened and the movie never explains it. Overall though, I personally think the movie, while fun, was unnecessary as we basically got a gist of Furiosa’s story in Fury Road, which is miles better. Hemsworth, however, was the best villain in any of the Mad Max films and it’s a shame he couldn’t have faced off against Tom Hardy in a proper sequel. I really want a modern day version of the likes of The Road Warrior, a true Mad Max movie.

If you ever have hung out with people that have an accent for a period of time most people will slide into the same accent. You won't usually know you are doing it until you're out with regular english speakers that will point it out to you. Although it was more common with me and Scottish, Irish or UK not so much with my Hindu friends, but maybe it was because I already knew what I was doing and tried not to do an accent. It just seems instinctive to blend in with groups, just like how the government is manipulating us by dividing us into groups because it's instinctive to belong. The best parts were the early scenes just based around Dementus. I didn't need more context for the Citadel. It worked perfectly in Fury Road as a place of pure insanity - in this film it felt like old news. The whole Wasteland now feels tiny with just 3 places. The Jack character added nothing for me, I wouldn't have included him in the film. For years Furiosa hides that's she's female - but then it's just suddenly common knowledge who she is, and she's now in charge of the war rig.. what? Why is Immortan Joe ok with this? Did he just forget that she escaped from his harem? Fury Road built up this huge personal conflict between them, but based on this film I question why she was that bothered about him.. Like at the end can someone explain why Furiosa would bother driving back to the Citadel at all?

  • @DomH75

    @DomH75

    Ай бұрын

@@scrabdusanproductions2104 Yeah, I've talked about this elsewhere. If Fury Road had been released around 2002, as planned, Mel Gibson was still at the height of his success and Mad Max was still extremely familiar. So they didn't need to build in a lot of character background for Max: we'd go into the film with a sense of who Max is, bolstered by Mel's familiarity. Trouble is, the film was delayed and Mel was eventually replaced with Tom Hardy. Tom really needed some screen-time at the start to establish himself as Max before that opening scene. That's pretty much the standard thing you do with a major recasting: you establish the new actor in a familiar context before starting on a new adventure. It would have taken just a scene of Max in his car battling some bikers, maybe a flashback to his wife's murder in an extended opening credits. Without that re-establishment of who Max is, the character development of Furiosa unbalances the film. So it's a sort of illusion, but ultimately the film turns into a Furiosa film in the absence of a properly established Max. If Mel had been in it, we'd have taken his Max for granted.

I'd give it a solid 7.5 out of 10. A good film, worth seeing, but Fury Road was a 9 for me. It is clear ATJ is very noticeably shorter and less muscular than Charlize, so believing she would be able to physically fight men almost 3 times her size with the same ability as Theron was a stretch. I DEFINETELY noticed the CG, whereas I never did in Fury Road. Some of it looked very cheap. Also, (SPOILERS) it makes no sense for Immortan Joe to see Furiosa become one of his brides as a child/teenager (with a very memorable tattoo), have that bride escape, then have her show up again with Jack with short hair and have Joe not even remotely recognize her. Between the tattoo and her face, he would have known immediately. I also hate when sequels/prequels use a different actor/actress. That said, I liked ATJ and her performance much more than I thought I would. She did a good job with what she was given.

Yeah I think a prequel was a mistake tbh. Although it's a good film (8/10 rating from me) I didn't need a Furiosa backstory, while I DID want a Furiosa trilogy or at least 1 good sequel which I think 99% of the fanbase would also prefer. The mystery about Furiosa's past was just fine with me and in some cases added more to the story. And Charlize is way too iconic for that role, so I was left missing her after seeing this new one. Anya did pretty good, but honestly Charlize cant be replaced. A prequel btw is sort of akin to taking your foot off the gas pedal, from Fury Road onwards.. Does George know this? Maybe it's not a great move in terms of $$ and we're seeing that now at the box office. I think more explosive sequels with Furiosa and Max, this time with Max being the more prominent character and Furiosa being the supporting role, with more story woven into it was the best way forward. Also I think Charlize could, and dare I say it 'should' have been cast for this prequel.. Just a bit of professional touch ups for her face in post editing is likely all they would have needed for most scenes, nothing over the top like in Gemini Man - which Miller was concerned about... We wouldn't have needed a perfect 25 year reduction in age on Charlize's face.. She's aged well which would make it easier. In the movie, she was in her adult role for only like 1/3 of it or maybe 1/2 which also would have made things easier in the editing chair. I think people would have been more interested to see it if it was Charlize playing Furiosa. PS: To any multi-billionaires out there: Please donate to George Miller so we can get our amazing sequels before the cast and crew are too old. LOL.

Movie was great. The expectations brought on from Fury Road and the long wait are pretty temporary and surface level critiques that aren't really intrinsic to what it actually contains. I'd say overall it was on par with Fury Road for me, maybe for different reasons, but it has a lot of the same DNA and creative voice behind it. Movies like this are so extremely rare, it's actually a miracle we even got this let alone Fury Road itself.

For me the movie was pretty fantastic, yeah there were a handful of painfully green screen shots but I didn't mind it. It was the montage that stopped the movie in it's tracks for me. They said they were preparing to declare War on the Citadel. I was so excited to see a war scene in the Mad Max Universe, only for them to do a disappointing montage. Then the finale is only our two main characters in the desert nothing else. Made me think George blew through his budget and didn't have the money to film the finale that he wanted. Fury Road had a 10/10 banger ending, Furiosa was a good movei but had a 7/10 ending for me.

Any studio will already know the higher-risk approach that comes with doing a spin-off than the lower-risk approach of proceeding with a story fronted by the franchise's main character so I think Warner Bros were already bracing themselves when this project was initially greenlit. A guaranteed quick-win profit would be a Gibson-led Max Max sequel or at the very least a Charlize-led Furiosa sequel as her performance was what fans loved most about Fury Road. So by both actively choosing not to do a main character sequel or utilizing the most popular component of Fury Road proves that Warner Bros were fully prepared to make this film for the sake of Miller's vision rather than wanting to actively generate box office with it. I admire them for that in terms of supporting an artist's vision which I wish a lot of other studios would do but at the same time, had either of the previous 2 options come into being, I would've certainly found myself buying a ticket.

One that I didn't personally vibe with as much as the pure action adrenaline punch that was Fury Road. That said it actually makes for an excellent companion piece if you've never seen Fury Road, but it def feels like this is a movie that should have come out in 2019, and waiting too long for a prequel has led to damped enthusiasm. I quite enjoyed "Furiosa" having recently watched all of the "Mad Max" films for the first time and having previously watched only "Fury Road" (which is still the best in my opinion). It's what I would describe as an edge of your seat action thrill ride with a lot more quiet moments for character growth in between when compared to "Fury Road". Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth are fantastic additions to the "Mad Max" world, and make the most of every moment they are on-screen. While not my absolute favorite film of 2024 (that crown still goes to "Dune: Part Two"), I had a great time with "Furiosa" and am sad to see it floundering at the box office. :)

It felt slower, there was more noticeable CGI, and I just wasn't that invested in most of what was going on. I think the movie is at its best about halfway to 2/3 into it when they are doing the war rig ambushes. And just about everything else felt anywhere from just okay to boring. Right when it gets to credits and you start seeing clips from Fury road I'm reminded how much more exciting that film was. But it wasn't bad or anything either. Anya Taylor Joy does a good job. I just don't think I am going to add this one to the home collection when it's out.

I actually like this movie more than the sequel. I liked the worldbuilding, the innovative ways metalheads would fight and generally preserve. I also enjoyed the immersion during the movie, it felt much grimmer and hardcore than Fury Road and more R-rated. The characters are more enjoyable and they felt deeper, especially Immortan Joe and his dudes discussing and stuff, I liked those parts a lot. The action sequences were top notch like Fury Road but honestly, having Furiosa as the "Mad Max" style not speaking much was more enjoyable and it made more sense storywise this time. I also liked the actress and I enjoyed Chris although I didn't think it was something outstanding. It did feel lengthy sometimes and I even thought the action was too much and too heavy. Overall after the first half and the kinda basic ending which we pretty much expected the middle of the movie is like stepping on the V8 engine. It was also very nice watching 2 different clans smashing to each other, at first I thought Chris was going to be Immortan Joe but he was a completely other dude and I was welcoming surprised.

In addition to poor cgi, nonsensical scenes, pound land captain Jack Sparrow Chris Hemsworth, lazy storytelling, dues ex machina, thickest plot armour and the biggest Mary Sue since Ray in Star Wars?

@@JoeyJoeJoe87 There were no plot holes big enough to take me out of the story. I thought the CGI was fine, certainly not as overdone as it is in the Marvel movies I’ve seen. I did not notice any nonsensical scenes, at least not any more than were in Fury Road, or the originals. I’ve never seen a Pirates of the Caribbean movie so no, that didn’t bother me. I don’t know what deus ex machina scenes you’re referring to but c’mon, these movies are all over-the-top fantasies. And I had to look up what a Mary Sue is. It sounds like a name given to a female hero. What are male heroes called? Is John Wick a Mary Sue or just the good guy? And for reference, I’m 54 and grew up watching The Road Warrior repeatedly. Saw Beyond Thunderdome in the theater twice.

I still maintain that it is likely that thunderdome is the still the last mad max film in the fictional timeline

Mostly agree with Oliver on this one, although I may have enjoyed it a bit more from the sound of it. The more noticeable CGI and sometimes overly comical performance by Hemsworth were the only negatives for me. Good mention of the 2015 game by the way, a must for any Mad Max fan! Did I imagine it or does the game get a nod with the Chumbucket type character who supplies Furiosa with the scrapheap of a car towards the end?
