@@davidgeisler9885 No, Lucas went crazy with CGI in later years. It just wasn't the core concept of Indiana Jones. I just think that people go to see an Indy movie and expect a few things: a fun adventure, a few scares, low-level "realistic" effects, and a cool James-Bond-like hero. Take these things away and it will fail as an Indy movie, just like KOTCS. Indy must never look like a parody of himself. It needs to look believable. In this regard, I don't think the aesthetic of the new movie fits the bill. It looks fake. It looks like somebody is playing Uncharted. Indy5 is too fast and too furious...

Red letter media and Roger Ebert said it best, the appeal of these films are the high quality action set pieces, travelling to different places and watching Indiana being a badass. You don't really care about his character or relationships that's not the point. If it was about the character then why does he still wear the same clothes at 80 years old.

A lot of reviewers are saying if the first 15-20 minutes were expanded into a movie they would make a great Indy film, but when they flash forward to the 60's everything goes downhill. So can they still make a decent Indy movie, it seems they can from what we see in the opening scenes, but then they throw that out the window. Also despite people lauding Ford's portrayal of Indy, Phoebe Waller Bridges character seems almost universally disliked with even those giving the movie a good review saying she is annoying, and not in a Willy Scott, Temple of Doom way, but in a 'she needs no man' sort of way. Hardly surprising when it has been rumoured that Waller-Bridge was allowed to 'punch up' her dialogue. I think if perhaps they had made her a relation of Marcus Brody the fans would have warmed to her more, but introducing Indy's supposed best friend cold in the opening minutes then expecting everyone to take to her was a tall order.

I feel totally the exact opposite of the reviewer of this film. This movie is awful. The first 30 minutes were great and felt like an Indiana Jones. However, once we are introduced to Phoebe Waller Bridge's character, the movie goes downhill. She is so so annoying. She takes on the role of the hero in the film, while Indy is treated like a geriatric sidekick in his own movie. It should be called Indiana Jones and the Abusive Care Giver. The ending feels tacked on but is nice because there is an appearance by Karen Allen. The bad this is the film is way too long.

If you are interested what started it read the article ORANGE AND TEAL HOLLYWOOD PLEASE STOP THIS MADNESS. Mixed reviews? That’s being generous. Nothing says a good time like a broken old man wanting to die.
I wish I could agree that this was a better send off for the character than what Indy 4 did. But the film couldn't justify its own run time and then it was just an abrupt ending. (Must have been hasty reshoots) This was not a satisfying conclusion when compared with 3 and 4. It's just sad to see Indy in his twilight years being so broken down and sad, I don't really think that's very 'Indy' at all He felt like a side character by the back half of the film. I know they had to workaround Ford's age, but the action sequences were lacking because it was filmed with that fast-paced modern shaky cam style so didn't feel like the predecessors. Williams' score wasn't really stand out either I wish there would have been a 4th installment in the 90s before he got too old, but in hindsight, he's in great shape in Crystal Skull where it's just about believable
@jtstacey83

I agree with you on many aspects but this is what you get when you go more "realistic" as the director said he would make HARRISONS age a factor in the story. Growing old can be sad when you outlive everyone and the world has deemed you obsolete. Imagine how many people die alone. Yet that isn't what an Indiana Jones story is about. It is action and adventure about discovery and good beating evil.

@@jtstacey83 That's just it, it didn't needed to be gritty and real. There's plenty of other franchises that have done/do that. This is supposed to be an adventure serial about an archaeologist hunting for artefacts and punching Nazis, we didn't need to see a deconstructed 'grounded' take on the character. That's where it falls apart, Indy was never meant to be viewed from that standpoint. I get what they were going for, it didn't work. Also, don't introduce time travel in the same story arc, as it's a direct contradiction to that. That and an extended cast of characters no one gives a fuck about
@gokaury

The Indy films only ever really work when they're based in the 30s and the 40s. That is when the old Republic serials were shot, to which the Indiana Jones films are an homage. You take Jones out of that time period, like they did in Crystal Skull and this movie, it simply doesn't work at all.
While normally I agree that a film should be watched before passing judgment, I’ve thrown too much money at Kathleen Kennedy’s Lucasfilm already. Frankly I’ve seen enough of the “aged, broken, depressed iconic hero” trope to know that it’s no longer worth an overpriced movie ticket. Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Willow, and now Indiana Jones. I just think paying for these kinds of films just to “give them a chance” is a waste. This movie doesn’t sound very fun, and that why I watch Indiana Jones. I’d say I’ll wait until it goes to streaming, but I probably won’t do that either. Kennedy’s Lucasfilm has polluted enough of my childhood memories. The way I see it, if I keep paying to see these films, I’m giving my financial approval of every decision Kennedy has been making. Money is the only language these people speak. You can’t complain about and keep paying to see it.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny are essentially epilogues. There’s no rule that says there can be only one epilogue as one of the greatest video games of all time Red Dead Redemption 2 has 2 epilogues since the central storyline is about Arthur Morgan and once he dies, it includes two epilogues focusing on John Marston struggling to live a normal life but is sucked back in to his outlaw lifestyle followed by him building his own home and farm.

Oh dear, when you list that many negatives about a film and then say it was good ... eh. You don't have to completely hate the film and can avoid the obvious political stuff surrounding it (although the studio pretty much made that a point), but let's not overcorrect in the opposite direction. No, Helena is not to be his replacement but lets not act like we can't see the pattern of Disney's Lucasfilm continuations and remakes. It might not matter anyway because if this movie doesn't succeed wildly, the studio is looking at $1B in losses in one year. No amount of positive spin reviews or ignoring the causes of this decline will change that. Yes, it's a decent adventure film about a grumpy old Indiana Jones. The problem is: do I really want to see an old Indiana Jones? If you do, this is the movie for you. If you'd rather have your hero stories end with optimism for that hero's future, which is kind of the point of this genre of films (hence the "happily ever after" motif), then no. I'll stick to the first three movies being the actual series and the last two as being fan faction. Regardless, I'll just chalk this up as an "agree to disagree" moment for a channel I otherwise find reliable for sensible movie reviews.

A lot of disagreements on here with the review. I have to go along with their criticisms. I'll just say it.. the movie was boring, Marion was used in a terrible way, and Bridge is just insufferable. She reminded me of Leet from Solo which makes sense as that was her as well. This was a horrible final bow for Ford and Williams.

Spot on review in my opinion!
I am not a massive Indiana Jones fan, but I did want to see it with my Dad because it was gonna be the last of the lot. Overall, I enjoyed it. It was clever and the story was good. I am glad they didn't do the cliche, "Oh I am old and make fun of me," thing. John Williams score was great as always. The opening music was amazing! Not to mention to the CGI for Harrison Ford and the train chase. A couple of problems I will have is that the action felt a bit too prolonged and everywhere. Some of the film didn't really know where it was going. Particularly the Morocco and New York scenes. I also think the villain should have clearly have been killed at the start with the train chase too. Other than that. It was great. 7.5-8/10

😆 Delusional. Dial is an actual motion picture and is the most story driven Jones of them all. Not the best, but still story driven. Uncharted was a huge nothing of a film. Don't exaggerate like your friends Jeremy, Doomcock and Critical Dipshit (who can't even write a halfway decent fanfic. He has no credibility, nor is remotely qualified to rate Dial of Destiny or any movie).

If they were going to make a film, why not make the movie based on that first 20 minutes? The whole rest of the film was bland and unnecessary.
I saw this movie. Likes: The flashback Nazi train sequence, Teddy, the Siege of Syracuse. Dislikes: Helena Shaw. That's all.
I think crystal skull is a better film tbh with more character
A betrayal of the character.
As always. Love your reviews. Keep up the good work. Sadly. I have no desires to see this movie which is both a sad and hard thing to say as a fan of the first three movies. Will watch it once it goes on streaming. It just sounds mid to meh and my time and money is sadly limited.
in hindsight I don´t get the feedback on waller bridge. she is just independent and Indy bests her several times with his experience. I don´t like the time travel, same as the aliens in 4. but the only other thing I didn´t like was indy being scratched in the tunnel and voller being hit by the train sign. both scenes would mean instant death. overall a pretty good movie
Damn I just ain’t sure I can trust you after watching this
I thought it was a massive disappointment. My daughter (12) fell asleep and I was bored throughout following the admittedly great opening.

Appreciate the open-minded approach and balanced review. I’m more likely to look for this film at my next opportunity to get to a theater. The one in my town closed in the pandemic panic and remains dark.
Good review. This was one of my favorite movies last year and I thought it was an amazing sendoff for the series. I got to take my son with me to see it, which made it even more special. I’ve always enjoyed Indy 4, but Dial of Destiny was a much better final chapter imo
does it conclude the series better than the 3rd movie?
Hey Oliver I've listened to several of your videos while at work doing data entry Especially the Star Trek series on each entry So I knew you'd be a great source for finding out about the overall quality I'll watch it But probably at home Cheers
Very disappointing movie but that is to be expected from anything related to LucasFilm (Disney).
Man what did they pay you?
I grew up on these movies, but there was ZERO reason to do anything after 3 other than cashing in on nostalgia which is pretty much the hollywood troupe now. I might watch this at some point out of morbid curiosity but I won't be wasting money in the cinema to see it just based on exp of these movie franchises getting dragged on years after they should have ended. To me this will most likely be pretty copy paste of the first 3 movies with nothing much else to offer bar its for a dial this time. Maybe I'll be proven wrong when/if I do eventually watch it.. but I remain firmly pessimistic on all these old franchises

This is probably the first review that gives this film high accolades. I like how he sticks up for Phoebe Waller-Brisge dismissing the criticism based on info from reshoots and her previous work on _Solo_ and _No Time to Die._ He also dismisses that she will be handling (re: mishandling) Tomb Taider next. Now I'm curious about his reviews for the Star Wars sequels. If they're glowing reviews, or mostly positive, I'm going to wonder. Yeah, different things appeal to different people, but....

@@davidjames579 Yes, probably, but his review still dismisses why the film is getting criticized, especially in regards to Phoebe Waller-Bridge who has been involved with the killing of male heroes. I mean: She said it was funny that she was able to punch out Harrison Ford....and I wonder would it have been funny if it was a man saying that about a female co-star? But then again: Oliver Harper probably has a thing for feminists. (Different things appeal to different people). He probably is a male feminist himself, which would explain a lot. But I am assuming through minor observations, and I digress.
by indiana jones standards it is a good film, as is the crystal skull really. the issue is mainly with the CGI and post production in my opinion.
Compare and contrast this, with the just uploaded Critical Drinker review.

I was able to watch the film on Wednesday. The cinema was barely half full and although the film was good in some areas it was very disappointing in others. I just don't like the whole concept of the dial. Since when is Archimedes linked to any mystic powers and where dose the whole dial-concept come from? The past movies always played with ACTUAL legends and myth (well as actuall as ferrytales can get but still) and there are so many more things in one of the thousands religions mankind went to in the last millenias that could be used for an Indy-Flick (Asian or midle-eastern folklore could have been a cool bit, things like Babylon or japanese stuff maybe...and don't get me started on the fate of atlantis ;) ). instead they make up this nonesense...

I agree, big part of the Indiana Jones charm is that they actually focus on ""real"" artefacts. Even the Crystal Skulls, while fake in their origin, had a big mythos around them and the ancient aliens theories have also been there for a long while, which I thought they combined quite well. This movie has like one deadly trap, the final tomb is located next to a tourist attraction instead of some ancient lost place, and the villain dies not because of the wrath of any god or because the artefact he searched for rips his flesh trough space and time, no, he just crashes his plane. These might seem like nitpicks but they are part of what sets Indiana Jones apart from other adventure movies

The dial concept in this movie is the Antikythera mechanism which is an Ancient Greek hand-powered device, described as the oldest known example of an analogue computer used to predict astronomical positions and eclypses decades in advance. It was found in 1901 in the sea in Greece. There is no evidence to suggest however that it was made my Archimedes in reality.

So, if you listen to comments, you come up with, "Wahhh, Disney is too progressive for me, too much diversity, I didnt see it because Disney" mixed with a few comments of those agreeing that Disney movies suck, than you might even find a couple actual comments about the film itself...😂
Ending may be too far fetched? First one has a magic box that melts people's faces, crushes their skulls, and blows their heads up. Second one had a dude that can reach into a guys chest and pull out his beating heart while the guy still lives. Third one has a 400 year old knight living in a cave and a holy grail that, when filled with water, can cure gunshot wounds. Fourth one, aliens. Naa, it was pretty much fully in line with the previous movies. I agree that they could have trimmed 30 minutes off it though.

It absolutely does not live up to the originals and I am lost for words at how Oliver could possibly have thought that it was a good movie.
I agree for the most part, Oliver and I absolutely loved it. As a lifelong Indy fan since '81, I thought it was wonderful. Were there a couple of things I would have changed? Sure, but only at the same level as the couple of things I would change about "Doom" and "Last Crusade", just minor character stuff. I thought it was tons of fun and ABSOLUTELY better than "Skull". It has a level of violence more like "Raiders" and "Doom", as well, which was a welcome shift back to those stakes - and the best villain since Belloq. Plan on seeing it many more times. I was smiling from ear-to-ear the whole time and the audience I saw it with was cheering in a way that I haven't seen an audience react in years. Ford was totally engaged and present again; you could tell he loved the story. Every friend I know who's seen it feels the same way, with the common refrain basically being: "were those critics at a different movie?" I'm MORE than happy with it and it'll be in my Indy marathons as the 4th in the series, from now on. And Indy actually *shoots* bad guys again (I counted four, I think), which was great to see, again, just as it harkens back to the grittier Indy of the first two in the series. I can't compare it to the original trilogy, but only because he was young in those films, so it was just a different Indy era - but as an "old Indy" film, THIS is what I wanted in 2008, but didn't get, 100%. From a TECHNICAL perspective, I was very glad to see that the SHADOWS came back and it has a much more cinematic look than "Skull" did, which was drastically overlit and looked like everything was on a sound stage. You could feel the real locations in this, which was great. There are many practical effects to balance out the CGI and I think the CGI, thankfully, didn't overwhelm it in the way that it did in "Skull" (obviously the opening 25 minutes include a lot of CGI, but it didn't bother me at all and it was a total blast - and Toby Jones is GREAT). How did Mangold do? I think he did a GREAT job. Were there sequences where I could see Spielberg shooting it a bit more inventively? Sure. But Mangold got ENOUGH of the Spielbergian vibe that it worked on that level. And yes, I was teary in the end, for all the right reasons. I think word of mouth is going to trump the mixed reviews on this. I doubt it will make a BILLION dollars, simply because I'm not sure if younger audiences are as into Indy - especially an older Indy - as Gen-X'ers like me are - and the budget being so high, it'll be a challenge - and Indy films have never made the kind of money that Marvel movies do these days, anyway. But all of that is just on the business side of it and I really don't care about that as a fan. It's the last film, so it doesn't need to justify another sequel. I just wanted a fun, exciting Indy movie that was better than "Skull" and a great sign-off for the character and it's absolutely what I got (and more) and I couldn't be happier. There are far too many "binary" fans these days who think they have to totally hate something or totally love something and there's no room anymore for "it was great, even if I had some quibbles". So thank you, Oliver, for ignoring the "Industry of Neg" that seems to poison the fanbase these days. Speaking personally, I thought it was terrific.
I can't decide how i feel about it. I believe it was better than Cristal Skull 💀
Superboy?
Mangold really didn't need this shit-show on his hands, and Crystal skull didn't miss the mark nearly as much as critics say, not at all.
