Watching you watching Barbra in Funny Girl took me back to the summer of ‘69 when at 16 I sat alone in a dark movie theatre in a little hick town in the south seeing this film for the first time. I’ve seen it countless times since then but that first time wiped me out pretty much the way it did you.

Fanny Brice was a real person, entertainer in the way back old days. there are some liberties taken with her story/musical being told here, but some people watching this may not realize she was a real person. Some songs were ones she actually sang over the years, many are written for the movie. Second Hand Rose was a famous number Fanny did in those days, and is portrayed way too short in the movie. Barbara did a version of it that got on the charts- you can find it on you tube, it's 2 min or so but funny as a bunny...

Some liberties is an understatement! Nick Arnstein was her second husband whom she met when he was married. They stayed together for seven years, through a stint of his at Sing Sing, before he got divorced. So, she knew exactly who he was before she married him. I was amazed when I found out.

1967: the six-day war between Israël and Egypt (& many Arab countries) and yet that didn't stop Wyler to have the Egyptian Arab actor and the American Jewish actress to play a romantic couple... it was a bold move for the time to have Sharif and Streisand together but it sure paid off!

Loved your reaction. This is truly a rare and unexpected collaboration from two iconic legends from 1979. Years later Barbra Streisand stated in an interview that when she was first approached to do this disco duet that she was apprehensive but later, she asked her 12 year old son, Jason what did he think of it. She was surprised to hear that he was a huge fan of Donna Summers and insisted that she had to do it. We are so fortunate that this unlikely duet from two of the most gifted artists came together and recorded this duet. Now, 45 years later, the lyrics sing like an anthem and continue to inspire a whole new generation of women to take their power back. Thank you for sharing this video. Sincerely, Louis Nelson | Los Angeles CA.

When the AFI voted for the best romantic movies in teh 100 years of cinema, the AFI's 100 Years...100 Passions special, it ranked #41. Barbra was brilliant, another wonderful Barbra movies are "The Way You Were" with Robert Redford, "What's Up, Doc?" with Ryan O'Neal and "A Star is Born" with Kris Kristofferson. As for Omar Sharif, omg, what a handsome and charming man, great. He was fantastic in Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia

The idea that a man has to be the bread-winner in a relationship - even if both are working, the husband has to be the "primary" provider, has to make more than the wife: that's the real source of Nick's hurt pride. It's frustrating enough for a gambler to live through the ups and downs of "winning streaks" and "losing streaks," (both statistical fallacies, but ones that gamblers cling to) let alone have a family to provide for, that's challenging- but when the family is provided for with or without him: that's where his pride hurt the most. A man whose lifestyle is provided by his wife's job more than his own job isn't a "real man," according to that world-view; that's why that crack about the Fanny Brice "meal ticket" caused such a violent reaction. That's been the prevailing attitude for a long, long time. Some men (and/or women, and/or members of society) even *today* feel that a married woman should /not/ work at all; her husband should make enough to support his family no matter what. Even if a woman had some career before they met, she should quit it to be a housewife full-time, whether there are kids or not. If she does work, does have some job, it should be a secondary income, not the primary one. Fortunately, that attitude has been challenged over the years, slowly being chipped away at decade by decade. There are many women who make more than their husbands. There are house-husbands, who do not have a paying job, but stay home to take care of the house and/or children. In a perfectly balanced society, these roles should be determined by temperament, by talents and abilities and prospects, not by gender. Some people- men or women, have the temperament and skills to have a well-paying job. Some people- men or women, have the temperament and skills to be a child-carer, a house-keeper (which as any house-spouse can attest to, is a lot of work!!). Some people- men or women, can have whatever job or career they are best at, and both contribute to the family budget, whatever that contribution may be, whichever partner may contribute "more." doesn't matter. Hopefully we will really and truly get to that point as a society at large, and stories like this one- as tragically romantic as it is- will be a relic of a completely bygone era. -My 2.5¢

I agree a certain amount of pride is healthy as it relates to values and morals. But couples in any relationship need to be on the same team and not competing against one another. An addiction of any kind will destroy a relationship and Nicky had a gambling addiction that was more important to him than anyone or anything else.

Flo Ziegfeld was played the lovely, classy, sweet-voiced Walter Pidgeon (who could sing!). There is a movie that focuses on his life (taking a number of liberties) with William Powell playing Ziegfeld and Frank Morgan (the Wizard of Oz himself) in a major supporting role. Also, you can see a Hollywood version of the Ziegfeld Follies in "Ziegfeld Girl", with a young Judy Garland, a young Lana Turner, a young a beautiful Hedy Lamarr, and a young Jimmy Stewart. Fanny Brice was an actual person, and you can see how she would have inspired Streisand. Here is the real Brice singing "I'd Rather Be Blue": kzread.info/dash/bejne/l5-CtrmtgbfPqpM.html

Beautiful move but Barbara's hair and makeup were contemporary but not correct for when the movie is set.

You do know that this a real biopic. This really happened. So stop analyzing it to death. This is why we need to research

You do know that this version of the life of the real Fanny and Nick is highly dramatized and fictionalized in some parts... the real Nicky was nowhere as nice a character as this portrayal. Maybe YOU should do some research before you attack someone for just expressing their feelings. Your comment was uncalled for.
