Fact: This song is based on the song "Be A Clown" from the Movie The Pirate, sung by Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. But of course O'Connor is just unique.

Quintessential example of "movie magic". This is a 10/10 picture. The acting, the singing, and of course, the dancing. Timeless.

Debbie Reynolds was only 18 when they filmed this movie. She said that by the end of shooting the Good Morning number that her feet were bleeding. And what can you say about Cyd Charisse!!! She had to smoke a cigarette during her number, but she had never smoked in her life. So they took a few hours for her to learn to smoke. She did the number, and she said she never smoked again. What an elegant, and lovely lady Cyd was!

Some people never pick up the habit, even when they try. My mom told me about her college days. She tried smoking so she could fit in, because everybody was. She kept at it for a whole month before she gave up - she just couldn't get hooked on nicotine.

Gene Kelly was a trained experienced dancer, while Debbie Reynolds wasn't, and he admitted later that he was very hard on her during filming and berated her for her mistakes , and was surprised that she still was friendly to him afterwards

They were friends but wouldn't work together on any movie cause of how Kelly could be The school he learned from they were all about perfection that's why he had that attitude. It's like Jk Simmons in Whiplash But that's why they shot the serenade after the dancing scenes so she'd feel better hearing him sing to her. That's why her eyes were sparkling when she's on the ladder when he sets the mood lighting

There were times that Debbie had bruises all over her legs because Gene worked her so hard. Debbie later said that during one rehearsal, she ran away and hid under a table on another set so Gene couldn't find her. However, she *was* found…by Fred Astaire, who kindly taught her all the steps, no trouble at all. (Of course, Fred wasn't dealing with having *his* film depending on a complete novice learning the steps, but still.)

@charlize1253 Gene Kelly was a perfectionist. Perfectionists are hard on others and even harder on themselves. For others, it`s always difficult to work with such people. It must have been a nightmare for Debbie, but Gene and Fred taught her a lot. Her performance was fantastic. Fred Astaire was also a perfectionist but a kinder one. Kelly could be brutal.

The dancer in the Broadway Melody sequence was Cyd Charisse, who was also in Brigadoon with Gene Kelly and The Band Wagon with Fred Astaire. Also Zelda was Rita Moreno, who was in the movie 80 For Brady last year. She's 92.

Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and her mom, Debbie Reynolds, died 1 day apart, Carrie on Dec 27, 2016 and Debbie on Dec 28, 2016. Carrie had a heart attack 4 days earlier on an airplane and per her brother, Debbie died from heartbreak a day after Carrie. At least they had 1 last Christmas together. Debbie loved Christmas so much that she kept her Christmas tree up year round. RIP two great ladies.

Gene Kelly asked Donald O'Connor to do the somersault off the wall because he had seen O'Connor do that in a dance number years before. But O'Conner hadn't done it in years and was a heavy smoker, so when he did it for the movie he said it nearly killed him!

It’s one of my favorite dance routines ever, and Donald O’Connor is amazing, but if you look closely, you’ll see they used a bit of movie magic there. On both backflips, the surface isn’t quite vertical. First he uses the board (which is made to look as if it’s just leaning there, but if course was firmly anchored). Then, when he uses the back wall, the perspective and the picture on it make it look vertical, but again it’s slightly leaning to make it function more like a ramp. Still an absolutely stellar routine, and it’s hard to believe O’Connor smoked four or five packs of cigarettes per day back then. But if dancers were to try that on a truly vertical wall, they’d probably injure themselves badly.

Singing in the rain. Great musical. West Side Story, another great musical, but my all time favorite musical is, “Paint your Wagon” Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin singing, not great, but that movie is hilarious.

The songs were all from the period- most from the 1920’s and 1930’s. “Singin’ in the Rain” was written in 1929 and has been a standard performed by hundreds of singers, dancers and celebrities over the decades. 😊

As a kid, Donald O'Connor was one of my favorite movie stars NOT for "Singing in the Rain" but for "Francis" (1950). Donald O'Connor plays a WWII Lt. who is sent to a psychiatric ward when he insists that an Army mule named Francis can speak to him. Western star Chill Wills was the voice of Francis. The movie was so popular that there was a total of 7 movies with "Francis the Talking Mule".

I loved Donald. He was married twice. The first time he married an abusive woman and after almost a decade they divorced. He married again in 1956, and he and his new wife had 3 children. They were married until his death in 2003. For Hollywood marriage, that was forever.

This movie simply makes me happy. It has ever since I was a kid. The humor employed here is similar to many of Gene Kelly's movies as well as the Fred and Ginger movies and is something that is missing in modern cinema.

Every song in this movie, came from another movie. The script writers were basically handed a list of songs from a bunch of different movies, then challenged to write a screen play that included them all. It's funny, just the other day, I casually wondered to my sister, "Wonder if the reactors will ever get to Singin' In The Rain?" I grew up on old musicals. It is not abnormal, for example, for my sisters and I to get into "Moses Supposes" in Walmart. Embarrasses the hell out of my wife, lol. She just doesn't get it 🤣

Gene Kelly was a perfectionist. He once guest starred on "The Muppet Show" and Kermit asked him if he would do his famous rain dance. Gene said no because he was afraid he wouldn't be able to repeat his perfect performance from "Singin' in the Rain" and didn't want to ruin the illusion for his fans. Also, that Kathy dubbing for Lena was actually dubbed by a singer named Betty Noyes! I've watched this a hundred times and I still maintain that the "Moses Supposes" scene is one of the most enjoyable dance sequences I've seen.

This is why there was a golden Hollywood period. Large casts, real sets, no CGI and fantastic singing and dancing talent.

This was my mom's favorite movie. In the early 2000s there was a movie festival over that summer where a theater showed one classic movie a week for the entire summer. One week was Singing in the Rain. I took my mom to one of the showings. She had the biggest smile on her face all through the movie.

Oh my goodness! Cassie, you're going to burst with joy! AND, you get to see Princess Leia's mom sing and dance. Hard to believe that you are just now seeing this. Could The Sound of Music be too far behind?

Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly showing love and respect for stuntmen since the 50's 👌🏼 Just a wonderful, iconic and delightful film, a love letter to musicals and to Hollywood.

Singin' In The Rain is one of the 10 greatest American films of all time. How many movies have this kind of life and energy?? CGI be damned!! Kelly, Reynolds and O'Connor are like cartoons come to life. "Make 'Em Laugh" is one of the best big screen musical numbers ever committed to film. Debbie Reynolds at 19 was put through the ringer to get her scenes right but she never let's it show on the screen. What a picture!!

"The Jazz Singer" was a musical, and the first sound movie.

I volunteered for the spay/neuter clinics in Montana for a long time. We catered to low income. A lot of people in the towns we would go to would give us a room for the nights we had to be there. Anyway, one time this woman offered her house up, she was out of town and knew one of the women also volunteering. I went in and there was this amazing wall of pictures. I looked at them and thought wait... isn't that Gene Kelly? I asked the woman and she said yeah, he's her grandfather. Amazing photos of family over the years. Another good musical romance from the 50s is "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers".

@@torontomame Fair enough. It was the story line that turned me off. I’m usually ok with the story lines for musicals which can be shallow or overly silly. But a musical based on the Roman founding myth story “The Rape of Sabine Women” was too much for me. I couldn’t get past the story to enjoy the singing and dancing. It also blinded me to your cool story about Gene Kelly’s grand daughter. I only had one brush with a musical star. I’ll save that for if/when Cassie covers one of those movies.

@@purpleslog That was my experience with Kelly's granddaughter's house. Just a nod to some other old musicals. We were talking old musicals. The film is an older musical. Yeah, likely based on your reference, but hey, it's entertainment.

I grew up watching musicals due to my mom's love for them. This is one of the more memorable ones. My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Oklahoma, The King And I, The Sound Of Music and this one were among her favorites.

When I was a little boy, my mom used to say to me "Moses supposes his toeses are roses, but Moses supposes erroneously." I never knew where she got that until I saw this movie. 😁

This is my favourite musical. I watch it two or three times a year and never got bored. The Moses Supposes scene is just a joy to watch, Gene and Donald were SO talented.

Cyd Charisse wore that green dress and did those moves just weeks after giving birth.

You are now entering a universe way richer than the MCU, the musicals of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Imagine that these actors had to act, dance, and sing without AutoTune. The sheer talent of these people far surpassed anything we see in stars today.

All the actors are great in this classic. But Donald O`Connor as Cosmo, and Jean Hagen as Lina are just so funny

A most delightful film that’s right up your alley, Cassie. If you ever get the chance to, catch a rerelease of this in the theaters as it is marvelous on a big screen. My favorite musical number is Moses Supposes. And man, does it get me to cry every time, the line “Ladies and Gentlemen! Stop that girl! That girl running up the aisle! Stop her! That’s the girl whose voice you heard and loved tonight! She's the real star of the picture! Kathy Selden!” followed by that look that Debbie Reynolds had with the tears in her eyes.

It Happened One Night is my FAVORITE movie. ❤

Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire are considered the greatest male dancers of classic Hollywood. Any film you see with either of them in it, will have the most innovative and technically perfect dance sequences.

"What came first the movie or the song?" The song, actually! It was written in the 1920s, when this movie is set! ☺Most of the songs in "Singin' in the Rain" were pre-existing. The vast majority were written by Arthur Freed, who had been producing & writing songs for the studio's movie musicals since the 1920s. (So, the movie is almost a mini-tribute to those early musicals).

Justice for Cosmo! Glad you finally saw it. Make sure your sister sees it too. It’s an all-time favorite, a perfect movie.

In the first draft of the movie, Cosmo was one of those guys who would take advantage of girls trying to get into the movies. They cleaned up his character but you should still assume he's not trying to attract the girls who want to u married.

Hollywood studios resisted for years to convert to sound movies because of the expense of converting every movie theater in the country to sound. When Hollywood finally decided to convert to sound pictures one studio made every player it had under contract to stand under a microphone and recite a nursery rhyme to test their voices.

SINGIN' and AMERICAN IN PARIS... Robert Preston's MUSIC MAN and then his most excellent VICTOR VICTORIA, which I'd stack up again the best of comedies.

The Music Man was the first musical I ever saw as a kid....it was on TV and my Dad loved the music and wanted us kids to see it. There have been better musicals, and so many worse, but The Music Man will always be my favorite.

Greetings Cassie Kathy is played by Debbie Reynolds. She was a Tripple Threat actress: singing, acting, dancing. She is also the mother of Carrie Fisher. During the 'Singing in the Rain' scene, Gene was suffering from a high temperature from the flue, but ever the constant overachiever, he struggled to complete it. I read somewhere that it took about 25 to 30 takes to get it just right. You can kind of hear it in his singing voice when he gets on the light pole. Anyways, glad you enjoy it, and you might get around to watching some of the others of this era of Hollywood musicals. Maybe you can get Carly to join for 1 of them. Have a great 1.

I'm 55, grew up in the 70's and 80's. I was exposed to the older movies as well as the current ones at the time. The fact that we didn't have as many ways to view movies at the time played a factor, but also having parents that were teens at the time these great movies were made in the late 40's early 50's helped too. Please react to more Danny Kaye movies. Not only was he a beloved comical genius, but a true humanitarian as well. Take care and be well. 😊

I loved this movie as a young kid about 5 years old. I first saw and loved Donald O'Connor when he starred in the B&W Francis the Talking Mule series of 5 movies. I highly recommend them. Donald and Francis got into all kinds of zany trouble. The 5 movies were all set in WWII overseas. I was also fascinated by WWII as a 5 year old to the point it made me wonder about reincarnation! One of the things he did that I had never seen is that HE COULD DANCE UP A VERTICAL WALL for several feet like gravity didn't apply! He would rush a wall at speed and nearly reach the ceiling while dancing on the wall! He did a flip off the wall and when he hit the floor was still dancing. You have to see it.

In The Full Monty, one of the 'strippers' in audition said he could do the Donald O'Connor up-the-wall bit and basically just slammed into it. Brave try.

Very nostalgic movie to me, watched it as a kid. Gotta say, that whole Gene Kelly Fred Astaire showmanship.... today I feel like it's a lost art. It's like you said, let's see those tiktok dancers do that. The choreography, the moves, the singing, the months of endless practice... those guys were inhuman to be able to give us all that in such a seamless way.

When the screenwriters came up with the idea for making the story about the transition between silent film and talking pictures, there were still many technicians, etc, who were able to fill in details anoit the time. It was also true that there were many actors and actresses because of accents or their voices simply not matching their appearances.

Whenever it rains, I couldn’t help but sing this song. By the way, the actress who played Kathy Selden in this movie is Debbie Reynolds, who is the mother of Carrie Fisher ( Princess Leia ). May they R.I.P.

There are many films that are called "classics," but only a few are truly so. These are the ones that set the bar for the rest. _Casablanca_ is one. And so is _Singing in the Rain._ Perfection is rare, but it sometimes happens.

The editing was so well done for this. It was cohesive, the musical numbers still flowed and somehow at 30 minutes it didn't feel like it was missing anything. Kudos to the editor! 👏

I know it's inevitable to avoid violating copyright...still I couldn't help wincing a bit for how the edits destroyed those beautiful, perfect numbers! 😥😥😥....

Debbie Reynolds had said that Gene Kelly was really hard on her during the shooting of this movie. Because he was a very accomplished dancer and she had never danced before. Fred Astaire, who was in an adjacent dance studio, found her crying under a piano and reassured her that all of her hard work was worth the effort.

I love those old movies from the 50s that I would see on TV when I was a little kid sick home from school in the 70s and this is one of my favorites. Donald O'Connor, who played Cosmo in this film, has always been one of my favorites. He has been in many movies and was an excellent dancer, as good as Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire. Cyd Charisse is another favorite of mine. She was the seductive woman in green dress w the gangsters and the long flowing white dress in the Gotta Dance sequence.

Gene Kelly was one of THE men of old Hollywood, dancer, singer, director, choreographer, stunt man, he did it all. As for Kathy actor Debbie Reynolds she went on to star in multiple amazing films and became a Disney icon when she starred in Halloweentown (one series to watch). Loved watching this film with my gran growing up. Awesome reaction as always.

The incredible thing about the dancing in the rain number is that Gene Kelly was SICK, with a temp of over 101, I believe, when it was filmed. What a trooper. Love this film!!!

Oh, wow - I used to sing the 'good morning' song to my daughter to wake *her* up! She was not amused. :D Just a super-fun movie.

The titular song, and the way it's performed in the movie, might be the best depiction of new love in film history. The way he is oblivious to the weather and giddy with excitement really comes across in the sequence. Good movie to start the month with Cassie.

This movie is the kind of pure cinematic joy that is so perfect for this channel.

The first time I saw this movie was in college when they had a sort of outdoor festival and displayed the movie up on the side of a white building. I smiled all the way through it, and all the way to my dorm till my face hurts from smiling so much! It still makes me smile whenever I watch it; it is a huge mood booster, lol.

Gene Kelly, one of the two most famous singer, dancers of all time, along with Fred Astaire. A genious, he also choreographed many of the dances in this and other famous musicals. See 'An American in Paris' to see a true masterpiece that includes another love story and incredible dance numbers. Jean Hagen had a short movie career (and a very nice voice) and played on a lot of tv shows afterward. To see her range in another style of acting see The Asphalt Jungle, a film noir about a brilliant jewel heist gone wrong. A true classic. I've watched your videos from day one. ❤

Kelly and Astaire were friends in real life, not opposites or rivals. Everyone had an unique style (Kelly the Athlet and Artistic one, Astaire the flowing, weaving one. Kelly the handsome guy from the neighbourhood (Worker, Sailor) and Astaire the Man from the upper class, with Smoking and Hat, and they were from different ages, Astaire from the 30s, 40s and Kelly from the 50s, 60s.) Love them both.

Was Gene Kelly the one that danced with the cartoon mouse? Not sure what it's from but i think it's somewhat famous.

I love these kinds of old musicals! They're so sweet and innocent and fun when these days we live in a world where everyone tries to make things dark and depressing and dark and violent and dark and cynical. And did I mention dark? Even comedies these days try to be too clever or have a lot of a kind of bitterness at their base. Sometimes we just need a bit of true fun .

Brigadoon (1954) is and always will be, my favourite Gene Kelly movie.

A fun watch would be...'That's Entertainment'......which is a whole compilation of song & dance numbers from the golden age of musicals.

About a year before her passing Debbie Reynolds happened to see a stage production one of my former co-workers was in. Afterwards Reynolds came up to her and said she was fantastic! I’m sure that meant more to Sarah than all the Gold in the world!

The song came before the movie. This movie used a lot of existing songs. It is one of the greatest, and my personal favourite musical of all time. Glad you watched it.

Also fun fact: The actress who plays Lina told Debbie Reynolds that she wouldn't hold the pie to the face scene against her, but that she had to make sure she hit her in the face on the first take. She did.

The actress who plays Velda, Lina’s friend, is Rita Moreno who played Anita in the original West Side Story

Kelly had a 103 degree in the dancing in the rain with a Fever in the street!!

Almost always forget that Gene’s 3 Musketeers was at the begging of this. Also the fact that in the scene where Cosmo does “make them laugh”, Don (a smoker) had to rerecord it. The first time they filmed it, do to no film in the camera.

Singing in the Rain is considered one of the greatest movie musicals and often at the top. Donald O'Conner had to spend 3 days in a hospital recovering from the Make Em Laugh number.

Gene Kelly actually touched ("blessed") my now ex-fiancee's ballet slippers from when she was about 3 years old. Her parents had them bronzed afterwards.

There was a film called "The Jazz Singer" and it was probably the first musical film with talking and all the sound synchronised to the lips.

Ginger Rogers also had bleeding feet after a dance duet she did with the perfectionist, Fred Astaire due to all the rehearsals.

I’ve never been a big fan of musicals, but I love this movie. It’s one of my all time favorites. I wish there had been a sequel where Cosmo got his time to shine and get the girl at the end.

I used to tap dance and one day a teacher of mine told our class we would be learning the tap dance from "Moses Supposes" as a sort of fun end-of-year event. I can tell you now, that the fact they can do those moves so quickly and with such clear sound is nothing short of amazing. You finally realize how hard it is once you try to learn how to do it. Incredible.

Seeing Cassie discover 50's musicals is awesome.... really enjoyed that x

The couch dance scene was done in one take, the first time through. Debbie Reynolds didn't miss a beat dancing with Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor -- huge stars at the time. Princess Leia's mother... read everything you can... she's worth it!

Cathy Selden is Princess Leia's mom, in case you didn't know! My favorite musical of all time. Make 'em laugh is such a fantastic showcase of Donald O'Connor's skill as a dancer. So glad you liked it!

I can’t wait for you to watch this classic!! The scene where Gene was “dancing and singing in the rain,” lol 😂 has gone down to be the famous dance scene of all time!! He was the greatest dancer that ever live IMO. A true perfectionist. The “good mornin’” number was done over 40 times and Debbie said her feet were bleeding but she loved doing the film. She said Gene co-directed this film and had a lot on his shoulders. Some articles say they didn’t get along but that’s true at all. Donald O’Connor said one time Gene got mad at him and told him to “stop fooling around,” and later Gene went back and apologized to him and said that he was afraid to take his anger out on Debbie because he didn’t want to scare her away. He was frustrated that she wasn’t learning the the steps as quickly as he would have liked. Debbie wasn’t a dancer but they hired her because she had the “look,” they were looking for. Back in those days everything had to be done to perfection and Gene was so hard on himself because he wanted to perform at top 🔝 speed. Donald was also a terrific dancer and he said the number “make em laugh,” was Gene’s request. This trio was amazing. The number that Gene does by himself in the rain said that he had a 104 temperature but said he wanted to do the scene anyways. That’s dedication. ❤️🙏🙏 Just don’t find that nowadays. Love all these old movies like “White Christmas,” etc. Love all the glamour!! Gene also directed Hello Dolly starring Barbara Streisand which is also Ana amazing movie musical! Please also check out Phantom Of The Opera! That’s my favorite musical ever!! Holds the record for the longest running show to hit Broadway. ❤️❤️🥰 Sadly it had to close its doors after the Pandemic 😷 God Bless to you from my mom and I in So. I think you'd enjoy another Gene Kelly movie, Brigadoon 1954. It's magical.

There were two male dancers who stood head and shoulders above all others in Hollywood, and they were diametrically different in their styles. Fred Astaire was known as "The Ace" because he was near perfection in everything he did. He was lean and moved like greased lightning. Gene Kelly was more athletic and physical in his movements and, like Astaire, was a perfectionist in every movement. Donald O'Connor was one of very few who could keep up with Kelly. The "Rain Dance" is one of the very best of all-time, maybe the best, because it was pure joy in physical movement. You should watch some of Fred's dances, because they were not only incredible in precision, but unique in that only Astaire could do them. His frequent partner, Ginger Rogers, was equally spectacular ... it has been said that she matched his moves in heels and oft time backwards. Debbie carved out a whole career with this performance, and she was always a treat onn camera. So much fun watching you watch this. You just opened the door to a new and wonderous world, are you going to step into it?

This is such a feel-good movie. I've heard multiple people call it "A movie I could watch over again every day and never get tired of" and I totally see that,

This is one of the films that I can always rewatch, they are just so talented at everything! I do think you'd also like My Fair Lady!

Gregory Peck was great in everything he did; The Manchurian Candidate!, Cape Fear!, OMG!! The Omen OMG!!, MacArthur OMG!, The Yearling OMG!!! About a boy and a fawn deer he raised, The Boys From Brazil (about neonazis having cloned and trying to recreate Hitler. OMG!!, Marooned, Moby Dick he was Captain Ahab. OMG!!, To Kill a Mocking Bird, The Guns of Navarone and about 50 others. He never made a bad movie and usually had the starring role. He was THE great American male actor for 2 decades. He had a very masculine commanding voice and was "tall, dark and handsome".

Another fun fact they added milk to the rain to make it show up better on camera. Dubbing voices was a normal Trudy Stevens dubbed the voice of Vera Ellen in singing in the rain Vera was a dancer not a singer. Hollywood's most hidden talent soprano Marni Nixon was hired, often unbeknownst to the stars themselves, to do the singing for actresses including Deborah Kerr in The King and I, Natalie Wood in West Side Story and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady
