​@@debbieaguilar5498 it's more a tradition thing of names passed down in families. The first son and daughter are named for the father's parents, the second son and daughter after the mother's. On the Greek side of my family, there are multiple cousins named Dimitri (Jimmy) and Zoi, after my paternal grandparents.

18:31 My son and I watched this together back around 2005, and the "Why you want to leave meeeee...?" has been a running gag for us ever since. He's 30 something with kids of his own and lives 1000 miles away, and I'll still say it to him sometimes when we're ending a phone call.

The bloke who didn't get his coffee in the beginning of the film is the real life husband of the actress who plays Toula.

My wife is Greek and this could be our story...the movie mirrors our courtship and marriage on so many levels

I'm Chinese. I brought a white friend to visit Grandma. Literally word for word, Grandma has really said some of these things. "Have you eaten?" "Good, I'll make you something." I love and appreciate this movie. Especially when the younger brother walks around shirtless.

This movie was EVERYWHERE when it first came out - we rented it on VHS so many times even to this day my family will randomly say "What you mean you don't eat no meat? That's okay, I'll make lamb!" and also "Hey Ian - we're gonna kill ya - opa!" lol

I love this movie. African American here, and I saw it in theaters around Christmas with my mom, grandma, 5 aunts on my mom's side, and a bunch of cousins. Grandma nearly choked on her popcorn laughing so hard. We relate to the big family and tradition. I loved how much you laughed at this. Your reaction was so endearing I finally had to subscribe.

I think that the themes in this movie are universal. My huge family is Italian and Toula’s family reminds me of them. My mother didn’t pressure me to get married. Our neighbor, Mrs. Casano, was always asking me if I was engaged yet. She said to hurry up because all of the good ones were being taken. I waited for the right man. He is a kind corporate accountant, with blue eyes, whose grandparents are from Ireland.

This movie also reminded me a ton of my Mexican family - huge, always big gatherings, in each other’s business all the time, and my mom has been nagging me about getting married for literally ever 😂

Greek mothers, Nigerian mothers, Irish mothers, like mine; were, probably always have been, the same, and an endless stream of humor.

The screenplay was written by the star of the film Nia Vardalos. Despite the film's low budget ($5M) it went on to become a surprisingly big hit at the box office ($369M). One of the most profitable films ever.

I'm from Argentina, my best friend is Greek. We never say we are friends, we are sisters, we met through Facebook over 10 years ago and we immediately clicked and we felt as if we were sisters separated at birth 😂 so we are sisters ever since. In 2018 I could finally travel to Greece and meet her face to face and our bond grew even stronger. I met her parents and I couldn't stop thinking at the movie cause her parents immediately adopted me as their daughter and since then they refer to me as little daughter (my friend is older than me and she also has a younger brother and he's also older than me) and every time they talk about their children they say they have three and it's so nice and touching they integrated me into their family. I felt so welcomed and loved and I fell in love with Greece and its culture and people. I started laughing out loud when literally 30 minutes after her parents told me "you are our daughter now and part of the family" he said "we have to find her a Greek husband" 😂😂😂😂 her father doesn't speak English so my friend tells me in English "we won't tell him you don't believe in God or he will have a heart attack that his new daughter wouldn't get married in a Greek orthodox church", we were crying with laughter. And when I say they are welcoming, I mean it, I also met my friend's godfather, he didn't spoke a word of English either so my friend had to translate for me and he was saying that now I'm part of the family and that he wanted to pay for my beers. I was always fascinated with Greek history even before I met my friend/sister and going to Greece did nothing but to deepen my love for that country. It's true that you may leave Greece but Greece never leaves you. When I had to go back home I couldn't stop crying in the plane because I didn't know If I would be able to come back one day as the economy in my country makes it almost impossible. I love Argentina, I'm proud to be Argentinean and I love my country with all my might, but part of me feels Greek and the movie line "there are two kind of people, Greeks and everybody else who wished they were Greek" I can say it's true 😂. I keep dreaming that one day I will go back to Greece and stay longer. This movie had a big impact in my life and it's definitely one of my favorites ever. And I wouldn't complain If I end up finding a Greek husband 😂. Thank you for this video, I loved every second of your reaction ❤ hugs from Argentina

I love this movie because it simultaneously celebrates, pokes a little fun, and then shows it’s ok to break some cultural traditions or expectations. Says this Texas girl who married into a Chicago Polish Catholic family. ❤️

I really like that it shows you don't have to break away from your family to be who you are. Compromises were made on both sides and they all loved each other enough to make it work.

The grandma was the best!

That bald guy whose friends with the male lead is actually the husband of Nia Vardalos, the female lead. The story is based on their actual courtship

Fun fact: this was one of the most profitable films of all time, an independent film made on a 5 million dollar budget that was on limited release and was never #1 at the box office but ended up earning over 368.7 million.

Mexican culture also do something similar to what you mentioned, when family members/Relatives/Friends help pay for your wedding, it's called Padrinos De Boda ( Wedding God Parents) kinda like sponsors. They help pay for the Catering, Hall venue, Flowers, Music/Dj...etc.. usually in the wedding invitations there's a added sheet listing all your Padrinos and what they spondser.

The lead actress that plays Toula actually wrote this screenplay and Tom Hanks is a Producer.

I’m latina and man I can relate to this movie so much! From the funnier moments like the big “weird” family and the always making food to the more serious parts such as the pressure to marry and conform to old gender norms and the mom’s speech about the hardships/wars in our homeland and coming here for the kids to be able to live freely. Every time we watch it together my parents and i always talk/laugh about all the parallels between Latinos and Greeks from this movie

This movie never gets old! It's one of my comfort movies, it's impossible to not smile and be happy after watching it

Proud Greek here, but this movie holds true for so many cultures. That scene with a new guy showing up for dinner every night was my life, only it was blind dates. Like her, I didn’t marry a Greek. The windex thing I don’t get. It was a thing in her family. The guy playing Ian’s best friend was her real husband at the time, Ian Gomez, who used to be on The Drew Carey Show. This was their story more or less.

I used to go to the Greek "Glendi" in Sarasota, FL growing up. It was an amazing festival of food, jewelry, dance and dress. I'm not Greek, but for that one day...I sure wished I was! Just a great time with amazingly loving and friendly people!

Thanks so much for this. I always enjoy seeing people see this culture. I'm always proud to be Greek

Always thought this movie to be quite funny, lovely one. When i was watching this, i was surprised by the similarities with my culture as well ( Brazilian), in the end, there are way more similarities among cultures but people seems to only focus on the differences, which is sad.

I love this movie! I can definitely relate even though I 'm not Greek!

I think you’d like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. It’s about a group of British elderly folks who have to move to India because they can’t afford to stay in England and for a few other reasons. It’s really good.

Aunt Voula with the TMI (Andrea Martin) is also Ishka the Ferengi mom on Star Trek DS9-in the earlier episodes

This movie is very funny and very sweet. Vardolis did a wonderful job writing this gem. :)

This brings to mind other comedies centering around enthnicites. Greek here, Moonstruck (Italian, which is me), and one of my all time favorites, Crossing Delaney, which I Highly recommend. It's a charming RomCom whose most characters are Jewish. Excellent soundtrack and the performance of a lifetime by the actress playing the Jewish grandmother.

The story about having found her twin inside her is actually a real medical condition. Lol

This is such a great movie, the writing, the characters, the humor and love. Your reaction was the best, thank you. My family background is Russian American and it was somewhat similar in the family dynamics shown in this movie. Someone else mentioned "While You Were Sleeping" and I second that one, it's another wonderful story as well as "Somewhere In Time" though it's a little known movie compared to others. My grandmother who was a Holocaust survivor in her 80s at the time told my older sister “I will CRAWL to your wedding. Get married and I will CRAWL to your wedding to see it. ‘ She said that while clutching her arm and her boyfriends arms in a grip….then on her way back across the room she said it again. Well my sister got married and Savta didn’t have to crawl. But another grandparent didn’t make it. We’re Jewish and a lot of this is similar….depending how many generations we’ve been in the USA. One of my cousins who was my parent’s age brought home a non-Jewish girl and his mother got a broom and swept her out of the house. And off the steps. We generally don’t do that in this generation

Hearing her talk about how family works in Nigeria makes me want to live there.

I'm Greek, and I was on line at a national site in the UK (by myself) next to a Nigerian family, mother, father and young beautiful daughter (many years back). It was a long line and took about 15-20 minutes to enter the site. I spent about 5 minutes discussing why marrying into a Nigerian family is important with the mom. The girl was rolling her eyes (sweetly), the dad didn't say a thing. It is an experience I'll always treasure as a Greek. I hope that young lady is indeed happily married and her life is full of love and children. Thank you for covering this.

There was a sequel that in my opinion was even better than the first one.

A consistent conversation with my mom and I: Me: “Hey mamma, what’s up? My mom: “I peel the potatoes”

This pretty much is what its like growing up in a Greek household haha! My yia-yia Panayiota was a strong, silent woman when my mother was a girl. She use to either just sit watching those old antique shows where people sell their stuff and the only words she apparently use to say was "What Junk!". Though despite that she was there for her daughter/my Yia-Yia Andronicki when she wanted to divorce her abusive Greek husband in the early 1960's and marry my English Grandfather. Everyone turned their backs on her except Panayiota and her sister Artemisia "Sia" who were nothing but supportive, apparently my grandmother's abusive ex showed up to the door one night drunk and demanding her to come back with him, in response Panayiota refused to open the door to him and shoved the end of a broomstick through the letterbox while exclaiming "colourful" words at him. Sadly though, Yia-Yia Andronicki didn't live long enough to see my mother become a woman, but my mother always says that on her deathbed she told her, because she was dating an irish boy at the time "If he makes you happy, that's all that matters". While my mother did end up marrying an Irish man it was a different one but she always held on to those words when most of the remaining family also turned their backs on her, "Oh he's gonna beat you", "He'll get you pregnant and then leave you", "He's gonna be out drinking every-night" were just some of the nasty things they said to her about my father. Despite that, my auntie essentially became her mother and when I use to go visit her in Cyprus (she moved back home after my mother married) she always use to say "Is my favorite child, Susie!". And while yes it got difficult as Panayiota got older, slowly falling deeper into dementia to the point that she believed she was a little girl. I don't think either my aunt or great-grandmother every really stopped being mother figures for my own mother, even at 89 Panayiota humorously picked up the broom and chased my father around the house with it after she mistook my mother and father playful banter as my dad insulting her. My aunt especially, even now that I'm an adult still sends me and my mother little kiddie things like small stuffed toys and the odd Greek sweets. I don't think even as she's pushing her 90's that Artemisia thinks her job as a parent is done!

I plan to offer help and guidance to our children as they transition into marriage and parenthood when the time comes. We were on our own for these milestones. Both sets of grandparents made it clear that they would not change diapers or help with our children when they were babies. I love this movie!

This movie is soooo true! Except they would argue in Greek! They spit on them for good luck, to get rid of the mati (evil eye). Voula mentions it at the restaurant.

Wow! You are in the mood for a comedy today, Missy! Your funny bone is totally exposed and truly vulnerable! Glad you enjoyed this comedy. Like others say below, there are many quips that apply to ANY family from ANY ethnic group. This movie is funny because the Greek culture is fresh and unknown to many Americans; we're learning their foibles, ceremonies, and their likes and dislikes. It's so enjoyable. Glad you reacted to it.

To ur comments about marrying early.. I think it depends on the culture in which u were raised. The average American that is 19-21 yrs old is not conditioned or socialized to be married at such an early age. They are basically still children. There is no way most of the ppl I know would have been ready for such a responsibility at that age. In fact most of the ppl I know that got married young like that are now divorced or in loveless marriages. Not saying it can't work but its a lot more difficult if both parties are still relatively immature. Different folks for different folks, I guess.

Very true - like I said, it works for some and not for others but you know - its not really a culture thing the average American from 1960 - 1980 had teenagers getting married out of high school - and living happily every after with the regular marital woes associated with life. In London, Paris and SouthAfrica - the same. So what happened - what changed to make the average 19-20 yr old immature or less capable to be happily married? I think the economy and time. what do you think? The economy changed - so they needed more people in the work force - which in turn affected the family unit - and affected the maturity definition. Time - laws changed and certain part made it illegal to have men marrying young girl. America 1950 30 yr old men could marry 16 yr old and 16 yr boys could marry15 yr high school sweets. It's illegal now - so that played a role. At 15 women and men were mature, now - not so much.

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. It's complicated.. definitely, the economy played a role. I think how we started to view teenagers is different than how it used to be too. Back in the day, u were a child or an adult. I think now, we realize that there is a little bit of grey area now. I also think we have gotten a lot more sensitive when it comes to protecting young girls. So many young girls and women are taken advantage of by older men that prey on their naivete and youth. I think because of that, many ppl are a little leery of marrying their daughters of at an early age. Not saying it can't work. It's just that certain societal and cultural differences make it a little harder. I also think, at least in American culture, we don't value marriage as much and many women, like myself have made a conscious decision not to have kids. I used to be an outlier but I'm seeing it more and more with my friends. Some ppl just don't care about settling down and having children. I'm not saying one way is wrong or right. Think it's just depends on the person and their individual circumstances. It's all about personal choices at the end of the day.

it also dependes on the economic status of the families. In america you can find decent jobs that early and get married (thinking of the kids). In other poorer countries they rarely marry this young because one could not support the other effectively and have kids

I saw your title and thought, "There's a film I haven't seen in 10 years", so I just spent the last hour and a half re watching it so I could relate to you. It's a very funny film, did you notice the exec producers? Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks (husband and wife) if they don't know how to do comedy, no one does. Really enjoyed it.

Im Greek and omg, the protagonists is exactly like my aunt. And yes, we are like that.
