Patrick Swayze said he watched his wife, Lisa Niemi, to get the movement and mannerisms down. No wonder he was so elegant and graceful because she's a ballet dancer. I think his dance ability also helped him with body awareness.

Patrick Swayze was teased as a child for being a dancer. (His mother was a ballet teacher) He did a 30 minute monologue about that as his audition for the part. And he NAILED it. Miss Vida is my favorite, but they were all brilliant. Even the towns people. (The blonde that tells em there nothing important around there for them to see is Gwenyth Paltrows mother) Amazing movie. I remember watching it as a teenager, and being blown away by all performances. Loved your reaction. 🥰 it’s such a great message about acceptance and love and friendship.

Oh I was so excited when Anne Baxter came on too! These ladies, especially Patrick Swayze, are so much like the beautiful stars of Anne Baxter’s day. Can we just admire how gorgeous Patrick is as a man or a woman? Such a classy, lovely man. I forgot how much l love this film. Oh Kemi please watch Priscilla Queen of The Desert, which actually was made first, quite a different storyline but so positive and fun and beautiful. Its an Australian film, it starred Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp. You’d love it. A lot of Abba!❤️

I love your observations about this little gem of a film. You absolutely nailed the class dynamic between Vita and Noxeema and Chi-Chi. I had never thought of that before, but you are so right. Chi-Chi was so receptive to Vita's assistance prior to seeing where she came from and what she gave up. You were also right that Chi-Chi thought Vita's kind nature was pretentious, but it was not, of course. I like how these characters are not perfect. They are just as flawed as the seemingly ignorant people they encounter. But those folks weren't ignorant at all. They were not worldly, but they were kind and tolerant, and accepted them into their community. It's such a lovely movie, but it isn't sugary sweet either. Noxeema is my favorite of the three. I don't think Wesley Snipes is given enough credit as an actor. I feel like I know Noxeema. I've personally known several women and gay men who are JUST like that. And each of them nailed the physical performance of their characters, but Wesley absolutely killed in the heels he wore.

  • @ACinemafanatic

Yeah I heard several critics mostly acknowledge Patrick and John but Wesley the one thing they didn’t like about his character was Noxeema bringing up race which is annoying but true for a lot of people of color that are in the drag community

I just knew you would love everything about this! I knew a lot of drag queens in the 90s and I remember being concerned about the casting, thinking the movie might make a mockery of the culture. What a great surprise to discover just the opposite! So well done! Also love Stockard Channing (Rizzo from Grease!) as Carol Ann. Inspired by the scene where they transformed their room, my best friend and I, to this day, when we see a dull drab room will say it needs to be "To Wong Foo'd"!! 😀

Who would have thunk the guy who stared in BLADE and the guy who stared in ROAD HOUSE would agree to a movie where they are in drag! Granted you don't have to be dressed up all the time. I wonder if Wesley would only do it if he could do the basketball scene - it didn't add to the story, really. I love toward the end with the Adams apple part. Accept the person for what they present - not what you want them to be. The name you are thinking of is RuPaul

The basketball scene feels bittersweet. I imagine Noxy loves basketball but rarely has a chance to play.

If one watches RDR regularly they will see that there aren't many "jock queens" - so its a scene that does not do anything for me

At the end you mention wesley Snipes. It wasn't Judge Dredd he and Stalone were in Demolition Man together. Stalone was in Judge Dredd. but both good movies.

The one thing they didn't get right is that drag queens don't live in drag 24 hours a day, it's like a job for them. With the attack on drag in the U.S this is obviously important since these 3 straight men were willing to play drag queens back then. There were a lot of important drag queens in the beginning show like RuPaul, lady bunny, coco Peru who are all still working today.

Great movie and a great reaction to rewatch during Pride Month! Did you recognize Barbra Streisand singing after they get the car and go over the bridge? (Gotta Move). Who could hate us gays after watching a movie like this? Lol

You have got to see “The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert”. It has a similar plot and came out (if you’ll excuse the expression 😂) awhile before this film. It stars Terence Stamp (who was nominated for an Oscar), Hugo Weaving ( of “The Matrix” and “Lord Of The Rings” fame), and Guy Pearce (“L.A. Confidential”, “Memento”, and “The Count Of Monte Cristo”). It was a better film than this one imho.

This movie was wonderful but if you want to understand it a bit better "Priscilla Queen of the the Desert" was released first and I think is a better movie.
