NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION MOVIE REACTION | 0:00 - 25:38
NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION MOVIE REVIEW | 25:39 - 27:06
National Lampoon's Vacation Movie Description:
Accompanied by their children (Dana Barron, Anthony Michael Hall), Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his wife, Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), are driving from Illinois to a California amusement park. As Clark increasingly fixates on a beautiful woman driving a sports car, the Griswolds deal with car problems and the death of a family member. They reach Los Angeles, but, when Clark worries that the trip is being derailed again, he acts impulsively to get his family to the park.
National Lampoon's Vacation, sometimes referred to as Vacation, is a 1983 American road comedy film directed by Harold Ramis and starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Imogene Coca, Randy Quaid, John Candy, and Christie Brinkley in her acting debut. The screenplay was written by John Hughes, based on his short story "Vacation '58" which appeared in National Lampoon.
The film was a box-office hit, earning more than $60 million in the U.S. with an estimated budget of $15 million, and received positive reviews from critics.
As a result of its success, four sequels have been produced: European Vacation (1985), Christmas Vacation (1989), Vegas Vacation (1997) and Vacation (2015). In 2000, readers of Total Film voted it the 46th greatest comedy film of all time.

Back in the day, there was no Expedia, you planned trips through a travel agent or tried to arrange hotels through the Yellow Pages. My dad tried to plan a trip to Williamsburg, and thought that he got a good price for a hotel at $25 a night. Well, it was a rent by the hour hotel for hookers, in the worst neighborhood of Williamsburg, and their air conditioning broke down. It was July and we were on the 7th floor. We lasted one night, until I had heat stroke and threw up everywhere. Best. Vacation. Ever.

Aunt Edna was played by the late great Imogene Coca. I found out about her when she played the Tooth Fairy on "Bewitched" but she was a regular cast member of Sid Caesar's live sketch comedy series "Your Show of Shows" from 1950-1954. They were TV show pioneers. It ran for 151 episodes.

I remember watching this movie on VHS in the basement of my best friend's house, which we had to sneak to see because it was rated R and we were too young. So amazing how much of that adult humor went clear over my head at the time. I vividly remember being confused about what was in that shoebox Vicky showed to Audrey. To my eyes, it looked like that fake green grass that you see stuffed in Easter egg baskets, and I remember being confused about why Audrey looked so amazed by that. And also not understanding what Cousin Dale meant by "bop your bologna." I thought he meant actual meat... Boy, was I young...

"Men gotta be stubborn [about knowing the way]" One time when we were on vacation, my father and I went to find a firehouse hosting a pancake fundraiser. We were out searching this small town for 45 minutes trying to find the damn place (this was at least 22 years ago, so no GPS) and Dad turned down all my suggestions to ask for directions. Then we stopped at a red light, I got out to ask someone on the sidewalk for directions, and before the light changed my dad took off, leaving me there because I asked for directions. I had to walk ten miles to get back to our condo (and I managed to find my way back by ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS) all while trudging through 4-6 inches of snow. My mother was PISSED when she found out. So yeah, men, especially old school men, gotta be stubborn.

That slo-mo running is a parody of the 1981 Oscar winner called Chariots of Fire, the song's called Chariots of Fire too, it was also parodied at the 2012 Oscars by Mr. Bean and the scenes of Rocky & Apollo running on the beach in Rocky 3 was homage to the movie as well.

Interesting info... The actress who played Aunt Edna, Iomgene Coca had become deeply afraid of automobile travel after a horrible accident in 1972. Ten yrs later she's in Vacation which was shot in an actual caravan travel style from location to location. Basically she was misled that it was going be static location shoots.
