SPACEBALLS Movie Description:
In a distant galaxy, planet Spaceball has depleted its air supply, leaving its citizens reliant on a product called "Perri-Air." In desperation, Spaceball's leader President Skroob (Mel Brooks) orders the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to kidnap Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) of oxygen-rich Druidia and hold her hostage in exchange for air. But help arrives for the Princess in the form of renegade space pilot Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog partner, Barf (John Candy).
Spaceballs is a 1987 American science fiction comedy film co-written, produced and directed by Mel Brooks. Starring Brooks, Bill Pullman, John Candy and Rick Moranis, the film also features Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner and the voice of Joan Rivers. In addition to Brooks in a supporting role, the film also features Brooks regulars Dom DeLuise and Rudy De Luca in cameo appearances.
The film's setting and characters parody the original Star Wars trilogy, as well as other sci-fi franchises and popular films including Star Trek, Alien, The Wizard of Oz, 2001, and the Planet of the Apes. It was released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on June 24, 1987, and was met with a mixed reception. It has since become a cult classic and one of Brooks's most popular films.

Perhaps consider watching History of the World Part 1 before Robin Hood: Men in Tights, both are worth the watch but HotW will be a bit anticlimactic after RHMiT wise choice giving Prince of Thieves a look before Men in Tights, the latter is very much a response to the former Any thoughts on watching the original Producers? (I personally prefer the newer version, Nathan Lane knocks it out of the park, but if you vibe off the Wilder / Brooks collab energy the original will scratch that itch well) archive.org/details/HistoryOfTheWorldPartI should you need it

I think it may have been praise for Lucas, rather than a dig. Lucas gave 20th Century Fox the lion's share of income from the Star Wars films, in trade for all rights to movie merchandising. Up to that point, no movie merchandising had been done in films, so the studio thought Lucas was an idiot and said, "sure, take all the merchandising rights, we'll take the cash." Lucas then went on to make more money in merchandising than the studio made showing the movies. Studios don't offer that deal anymore.

He did speculate however no merchandise in case people mistook Space Balls merch for Star Wars. That's why there is all the merchandising jokes.
