In this tutorial, I show my process for painting cat eyes and fur in pastels. This was originally one of my Patreon tutorials, which I'm now releasing publicly as a full pastel lesson. I no longer have my Patreon channel, so I've released several lessons free online for those who want to learn how to paint animals and pet portraits with pastels. In this lesson, I paint the fur, eyes, and cat's nose, and show you what I do, step by step. I had several students create amazing realistic work using this video. I hope you enjoy it! I also have a free mini eBook for those who join my newsletter on my website at www.carolerodrigue.com Be sure to click the download box and check your spam folder. Hey, beautiful work.i mean BEAUTIFUL! I dabble in pastels but am a watercolourist. I'm trying to train my brain to flip from light to dark to dark to light. It is so backwards to me, but your tutorials are so helpful. Thanks so much, looking forward to learning more from your spectacular video tutorials.

Absolutely brilliant work and I really appreciate the time you take to really explain your techniques for the different areas on the cat.I am finding it really difficult to apply the right amount of directional pressure on the Pastelmat in order to achieve the realistic look of the fur and get disheartened when blotting away too much work already worked whilst trying to change over to other coloured hairs in the same layer!!(if that makes sense).It's hard to know and recognize just how many layers you can get render before being able to apply the final details. 😍
@CaroleRodrigue

I understand what you mean. The best thing I can say is that this will come with more time and practice. Get a very thin bottom layer on, then start building up. I tend to start dark, add mid tones, and light details last, most of the time. Your bottom layer does not need to be perfect. Are you perhaps spending too much time there? Just keep practicing. It’s those errors that will give you “aha” moments eventually, and you will learn more. Look at your subject, squint to determine your darkest colours, start there, then build up your details. I hope this helps!
Ridiculously good, I am busy with cheetah and needed to see what I am doing wrong, it seems like my pencils not getting the desired effect. It could be my paper not allowing me to layer as much. But looking at you drawing it seems I should just keep going. Thank you for this video.

Thank you. I’m happy you got something from this. 😀 Good luck with you cheetah!
Really enjoying all your tutorials your explanations as you work are invaluable. Absolutely stunning artwork. I have currently been trying to master colour pencil, Polychromos to be specific. I have used solvent to blend the pencils to gain a painterly effect. However I do find colour pencils have some limitations and one important factor is the difficulty of laying light colours over the dark which is often a challenge. It is for this reason I have been looking at more pastel tutorials and found yourself. Have you ever used colour pencils and if so, do you find pastels more forgiving than the coloured pencils?
@CaroleRodrigue
4 жыл бұрын
Art By Connie Dawn Why thank you Connie! I appreciate that. As for color pencils, yes I have worked with them. They’re a completely different beast from pastels. Pastels are much more forgiving and easier to layer with as long as you’re using a good toothy paper. I love working with pastelmat or Uart sanded paper, 400 grit.
@katskinnerart1708

Pastels are SO much more forgiving than coloured pencils. I used to work in coloured pencils, and tried out pastel just for fun. It took one project for me to never go back to coloured pencils. They are insanely fast compared to coloured pencils, and so so forgiving. Use a good paper - I also love Pastelmat for its very fine grain. It takes quite a number of layers. You can layer lights on darks pretty well, but there are limitations (you won’t get a pure white on top of a very dark color for example). Also with pastels, if you use a kneaded eraser you can remove pastels to a decent degree (dab don’t rub).

Thanks! Yes, I’m working flat only for recording purposes, otherwise the camera has to be on an angle. I normally work on an easel when not recording.
Hi This is great artwork! where can I find the referencephoto? I don't see an attachment :(
After painting in oils for the last 15 years, I bought my first pastel pencils yesterday, just a few to start with. It's not as easy as I thought it would be. Still trying to work out which base colours to use. Seems to be 3 or 4 layers of different colours before I get to the highlight colour. Your videos are very helpful, thank you! Sharpening these pencils is a nightmare, just can't get that perfect point!
@CaroleRodrigue
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, sharpening isn’t always easy. I don’t worry about keeping a very fine point all the time since there’s usually a sharp edge even on a blunt pencil. Keep your initial layers thin to allow subsequent layers. As for which base layer to start with, that comes with time and practice. Often, starting with a mid tone is easy unless you know the darker tone will be better. The more you experiment, the more you’ll learn. It becomes intuitive after a while. Best of luck and have fun! 😃

Thank you Carole for the advice. Sandpaper seems to work for me. I sanded a pastel stick into a chisel shape and got a razor sharp edge. Works for a pencil as well. Yes, you're right, I'll learn by my mistakes. unfortunately I think I've started on the most difficult - it's a white cat. Used grey base layers but it gives a cold white look so changed to browns. Thanks for your very helpful videos. It's actually your fault that I started with pastels:)))
@CaroleRodrigue
4 жыл бұрын
davekennedy52 Yes, whites are tricky. Your underlayer can be various colours depending on what your painting. Sometimes a cool underpainting is required, sometimes warm. Reflected light can be various colours too. And if you end up not liking pastels, don't blame me. 😉

Excellent, love the eyes. Only just started to lean painting (at my advanced age lol). Want to paint our cat who passed a few months ago as a pressie to my wife. He was predominately black with some white. Couple of questions if I may. Would you suggest pastels or oil would be easier, and do you have a video of how to paint a black cat in pastel ? Many thanks loving your work here. Richard.

I'm an animal portrait artist, and I'm wanting to try some pastel portraits. Can you suggest what paper and pencils I should use to get realistic detail? I would greatly appreciate it.
Hi Carole! Maybe I missed where you mentioned it in the video... what brand pencils and sticks are you using? I’m guessing Caran D’Ache pencils...

Both painters tape and frog tape are not acid free nor ph neutral. If you're ever going to sell or gift your work etc. Please please don't use either of those on them. It will eventually deteriorate your paper and destroy your art. Everything leaves residue behind whether you can see it or not and there have been actual paintings where blue painters tape has been used, even scotch tape etc. And removed after done, and a few years in there's holes literally 'burnt' through the paper where it was taped. It's really sad when I hear this advice given my artists. Use a ph neutral, artist grade tape on your work if you want to sell or gift it. Please trust me on that. ❤️
@lorijones9579
Жыл бұрын
@@unboundbytiffany I don't sell my work, and I've only given a few pieces as gifts. But I have paintings that I did nearly a decade ago using frog tape that are totally fine, not even a tiny bit of damage on the edges of the paper. I'll take your word for it that ph-neutral artist-grade tape is better, and now that I know this, I'll use it from now on, but let's not be over dramatic.
@unboundbytiffany
Жыл бұрын
@Lori Jones it's not dramatic, it's common sense. If you were selling your work, you don't need customer's coming back years later upset as hell they spent a good amount of money on something deteriorating. Us artists spend a quite of bit time talking about lightfastness in our actual mediums but never everything else that touches our work. Have a good day!!

@@CaroleRodrigue like when i Made a wrong outline or fill in with the wrong color?
@CaroleRodrigue
2 жыл бұрын
First, that depends on the paper you used. If it’s pastelmat, you can roll a kneadable eraser to remove your outline as much as possible. As for the color, you can try wiping off carefully with a paper towel and just cover with the right color. Pastels are forgivable that way. There are some erasers that take off pastels too. Paper towels would be my main option.
I love pastels but im having a hard time spending 38 dollArs on a small pad of paper. Ughh but i neeeeed it!
