Full Pastel Drawing Tutorial Part 1 - How to Paint Black Fur and Cat Eyes

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this full pastel drawing tutorial, I demonstrate how I paint black fur, as well as the eyes. This is part 1 of a previous Patreon tutorial which I am now releasing. I show my pastel technique for painting this cat step by step, from start to finish as I explain what I do and why I do it. The reference photo can be found on Pixabay for those who are interested in trying their version. Part II can be seen here: • How to Paint Black Fur...

    Carole, I love how you make it sound so simple..."Concentrate on the 'shapes' and 'colours' and when they all come together, you have a painting"...yes, we are actually drawing with our EYES! That what we have to train...drawing what you SEE and not what you THINK YOU SEE. Also your SO CALM voice helps us understand that the whole creative process is supposed to be ENJOYABLE, not make one stressed out! Thank you for sharing your talent! Linda

    Thank you so much. This is exactly the information I was looking for. So excited. Will you be listing your supplies? I am new an I was wondering about the paper that you recommend and possibly the number of the colors for the pencils. So appreciate you sharing so much information. Sometime show us your sleeping dog. How cute.

    I'm so happy you like this! Give me a couple of days and I'll try to list the supplies as best as I can remember them, but basically, for the cat fur, you're working with blues, black, and mauves, a bit of greys, and white. The eyes, any variation of green/grey, yellow. The background is grey with a bit of green, and I state the colors as I paint. Use whichever you have and you'll be fine! The paper is Clairefontaine pastelmat. I'm also working on a tutorial painting my dog which will be available for sale on my website very soon.

    Hi would wax paper or parchment work for protecting your work?

  • @CaroleRodrigue

    @CaroleRodrigue

    2 жыл бұрын

    I’ve never used those so I can’t recommend. I could see wax paper leave a waxy residue. The reason I use glassine is it prevents static and the pastel stays on your paper and not on the protective sheet.

    So when you use your finger to blend, aren't you leaving oils behind? Why don't you use the stump?

  • @CaroleRodrigue

    @CaroleRodrigue

    4 жыл бұрын

    Great question Julie! And my answer would have to be no. Blending is different than keeping your hand rested in one spot of bare paper for long periods of time. If I’m resting my hand on the pastelmat, then oily residue gets transferred because there’s nothing between my hand and the paper. When blending, I’m spreading pastel rather than rubbing on bare paper. Also, I keep my hands very clean by washing before working, and cleaning them a lot during. People have used their hands to blend pastels since they were created. Besides, blending stumps are too small for large surfaces. I use them in tight spots like eyes. I do also use sponges for larger areas just because I can work more quickly.
