Full Time UK Motorhome Living Costs - Van life Monthly Budget

Update: I have recently updated this video for 2022 - check out the new video here • Cost of Living In a Mo...
Today I'm answering some of the most popular questions I get;
- How much does it cost to live in a motorhome?
- How much does van life cost?
- What are the monthly expenses living on the road?
I get these question from loads of viewers and subscribers that are looking at van life for themselves and it's understandable and wise thing to think about before jumping in.
I break my van life costs down into 5 categories
1. Upfront/one time costs
2. Monthly expenses
3. Maintenance
4. Major costs
5. Emergency costs / Plan B
I'd love to hear what you think about these in the comments below, and to other vanlifers do you agree with the monthly costs or am I way out?

    I just stumbled across your video by accident. I've wanted to full time for years but my late partner was a proper home bird. I've been converting a box van into a motorhome tor the last 18 months. I took the plunge, retired early at the end of August, then fractured my ankle four weeks later which has slowed me down a bit. I think I should be ready to go full time early next Spring. I had been going over and over the costs and came up with similar figures to yourself. I'm not a telly watcher so I wouldn't have the cost of all that. I like my radio, music, play a couple of instruments badly, read books, like building stuff (I'm and electronics hobbyist) The only thing I need to watch is booking up for too many festivals! I can generally feed myself well on £20 to £30 a week and being retired will have all the time in the world to prep meals rather than buy out. Of course I have budgeted for pub stops, meals out, sightseeing and stuff. Keeping some money in the bank for emergencies is a must in case, god forbid, your home gets totalled or stolen, at least until the insurance pays out. Anyway, I have just subscribed and will be catching up on your other videos. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    That's true. I'm not a hippy or a tree hugger but it's just plain wrong that we all NEED to work the majority of our lives. NEED to pay for EVERYTHING and fall into society. Wish it could be an easier life. Theres enough of everything for everyone. We may only get one short life on this earth and we spend most of it working and paying instead of enjoying

    Nice guy and I'm sure he spends all his money on the things on his list but the reality is that apart from what is spent soley on the motorhome itself, everything else is irrelevant. No matter whether you live in a bedsit, flat, house or whatever, you still pay bills. For example, I live in a bungalow, pay for phone, t.v, internet petrol, car tax, insurance, m.o.t, servicing and so on. If I was explaining "bungalow living" what would be relevant is what i spend on home insurance, gas, electric, water and sewage, painting and decorating, repairs, council tax, etc.

    All good stuff, however, seem to be 3 glaring omissions. Wear and tear items - things like tyres, brakes (and clutch judging by how you get through tyres), all the longer term stuff that can be broken down to monthly based on your use and mileage. For the project to be sustainable, you need to include depreciation which I guess will be heavier than normal for a rig that is lived in full time. Finally, unless you park in the truck yard, how much is the seasonal pitch?

    Hi Darran, living full time in my camper van is something I am considering in the future (once my youngest is a little older - my oldest is already 22). I very much enjoyed your video and would like to thank you for taking the time and sharing these. One cost you didn't mention, perhaps not relevant to you, is the cost of parking / camping. Do you only park in free places? - (by friends and family, as you mentioned) - Or do you travel around and have to pay for overnight parking / camping? I know there are smartphone Apps that indicate free motorhome parking, but my experience with them is a bit hit and miss. If you can leave a reply here of how that works for you and in average how many days in a month you have to pay for overnight parking and/or camping, I'd be grateful. Enjoy your life!

    Been using a motor home for years ,it’s a bus sized one. One thing all motorhomers should have is a building / large shed to keep your motorhome in the winter . Great for keeping it out of the worst of the weather and makes repairs and servicing easy. Also doubles as a store for spares and fuel . It’s got to be linked to the services ,electric and sewage. It’s a live saver and a financial life line as it’s a place to extend its vans life and reduce the wear and tear.

    Hi all, yeah like the last comment says there is no great secret to dumping tanks it's just a very sensitive subject with non van life's and the general public who don't want to and can't understand the whole van life thing. So yeah grey water goes down any drain, it's just shower and washing up water...pretty much the same as the bucket of water people wash their cars with. Black water (toilet) goes down a friend's toilet, public toilets, or stop at small camp sites and pay a few quid to empty tanks. Hope this helps 😊😊👍🏻👍🏻

    Very watchable and informative video. Mind you, you should really remind people that your budget includes having transport. So it compares to the cost of someone having to run a home, and a car. So you could probably reduce the running costs of personal use of the motorhome in your calculations. It’s the same for the general upkeep of the motorhome, because we have upkeep costs of our homes too. So your water pump cost is balanced out by my washing machine repair guy cost. Thanks, I used to wonder if it was a good idea, now I know 😀

    Hey Fella..just watched your video and gave me a shit load of answers. This way of living is better than renting and having a mortgage. U said it would be around 500 pounds a month, im currently spending more than that living in a 2 bed house so im now thinking of doing the van life...ive watched a few other videos of van lifers in the UK and got answers from them...one question i do have regarding this type of lifestyle....do u get hassle from council officials etc for parking where u want? i know some of them have moved people on...great video and thanks for helping me get the answers i need...

    I lived in a vehicle back in the days when we were called 'new age trvelers' the biggest saving was not having to pay for a place to park up. I now live on a boat and have to pay moorings and the people i know living in campers pay to be on a site, so how do you avoid that cost?

  • @jasonclarke7422

    @jasonclarke7422

    donald gilchrist sadly there is no way of avoiding costs these days,unless you take a camper van to Scotland where you can wild camp for free, but for me living the other end of the country it would be a bit of a hassle.

As for parking I don't park on sites, im 99.9% Urban and only ever go on sites for festivals and meetups apart from 1 or 2 times a year that I've got 3/4 days off at once and want to chill, hope this helps 😃😃👍🏻👍🏻
