I've recently moved into my sprinter full time and find that every day, something gets changed around to make life easier. I'm 75, female and alone, so all the decisions are mine, which is nice most of the time, but sure would be good if someone else made a coffee and fed the dog once in a while. When I think of the woman at home, I can't relate to that life any more. Waking up in the same place every day and wondering what to do with life. I much prefer this adventure on the road where I can see life happening. It's a process getting used to van life and it takes time, but once mastered, most people wouldn't live any other way.

Glad to hear this. I'm 59 and a strong introvert. I like the idea of going off on long trips. I like my garden and book collection too so a permanent, shared base makes sense for me.

Just another thought: I’ve lived in giant cities, had jobs with multi-million dollar contracts, and I have also lived in a semi-derelict caravan with no money. This concept of ‘everything takes longer’: in my experience, when I would wake up in Sydney or Shanghai, I’d think, “I have 10 things I need to do today.” If I achieved 8 of them, I’d go to bed stressed because those 2 things now have been added to tomorrow’s list. When I lived in the middle of nowhere in a caravan without money, I’d wake up and think, “Apart from food, water and heating, is there anything I need to achieve this week?” And if I couldn’t achieve it that week, I didn’t care. I slept peacefully and stress-free, knowing that I’d get it done eventually… maybe. My point is: don’t take your ‘city life’s expectations’ with you when you are trying to leave all that behind. Downsize you lifestyle: downsize your wants: downsize your stress: but maximise the everyday living of your life. Just my tuppence worth.

The "everything takes longer in a van" is no joke! I've been vanlifing for 7 years and I'm still AMAZED by how little I can get done in a day. Like, wow, it's 9pm, what did I do today? I cooked breakfast, washed the dishes, took a shower, worked a tiny bit, drove a little bit, and filled my drinking water, and whoops, time to go to bed.

Just part of the reason I love camping. When "at home" in my sticks and bricks, it is really easy to sit in front of the computer and veg out. When out camping, the routines of camping, the setting up and breaking camp, gathering firewood, cooking, washing, and personal maintenance, are all complicated by the fact you are camping. Being as old and arthritic, 68, as I am, it demands a certain amount of healthy activity I don't usually get when at home. I would love to spend half or more of my remaining years in the wildernesses all over this country. The nice thing about the lifestyle is, if you don't get done today what you intended, ther is always tomorrow. One of my pet peeves while traveling/camping is deadlines. I HATE having to be somewhere at a certain time. If I see something interesting along the way, I may just stop and explore.

Add my wife and I to the list of subscribers who appreciate your refreshingly candid take on the realities of nomadic van life. It can indeed at times seem like you are living out of an oversized suitcase on wheels. As you so tactfully stressed, while "vanning" is a enjoyable and ultimately rewarding lifestyle, you must be accept the necessity of working harder to accomplish the mundane, everyday tasks easily taken in stride in a stationary setting. My wife and I are fortunate to have a home base from which we can explore the southwestern US and beyond. While it precludes us from claiming the mantle of being full time adherents to the lifestyle, it allows us to mitigate many factors that might otherwise contribute to emotional burnout. We greatly admire the grit and tenacity of the true van life practitioners such as yourselves. However, being on the road nine months a year has proven a satisfying compromise for us. You are clearly made of sterner stuff. . . . Please continue presenting your practical take on real world van life issues. Happy travels!

great discussion. you hit the nail on the head with "decision fatigue". I've been doing long solo motorbike trips around europe for a couple of decades. when I first started I totally under estimated that, or even clocked what it was, and that it was fatiguing me. its kind of a skill you have to aquire that becomes a lot easier. I've done lots of bike trips with other riders as well, and solo causes much more decision fatigue I found, because you can't bounce even one decision to someone else.

I have decision fatigue just deciding on a vehicle platform. For some maybe its easy but im finding that the closer I get the harder it gets to make decisions because now its real. I have to live with actual choices that cost a lot of money that is not easily replaced. I have nobody to talk to apart from looking at vids and comments. When its all on you, its hard and fatigue comes. Its like climbing a mountain. I didnt have problems like this before in my life.

This is so true! I live solo and always in complete rebuild building projects - solo decision fatigue can be hideous. Definitely need to ensure enough time with others who are up for a bit of 'idea bouncing' and 'outcome ranking' or else I get stuck and slow to a halt. Your bike tours sound great!

@@mkteku thanks for that. I too like a 12 box truck, even 14, the problem is.....i think 10 foot is the max without dualies. Its not just 6 tires to replace, that tire size is way more expensive, with a different read end, etc. Also, gas mileage sucks on a box with dualies and if its a Ford it may have the crappy 5.4 engine in which case Chevy would be better. So, if a box for me, have to keep it at 10ft which wouldnt be worse than a van and would be easier to build than a van with curves. Of course we all want max space but there are tradeoffs to get space. Also, box trucks being for work, are noisy as hell and you have to work on that, together with creating a pass-through which I would need help with. These pros and cons have led to indecision and fatigue. I've been at this a while and so darn tired.

I really enjoy your videos because I feel you honestly show the realities of full time vanlife. Thanks for your honesty again.

Love watching van life videos even though I know I’ll never actually do it myself full time, but stumbling upon this video and your channel for the first time I’m glad to see somebody talking about this side of it in such honest detail. I think the mental health aspect , especially for people who have maybe never considered themselves susceptible to such problems, is such an important message. Great video.

Thank you for addressing this, guys! A lot of channels tend to glamorize van life something awful, and I know for a fact that it is far, FAR from a glamorous lifestyle a lot of the time. Maybe even most of the time. I of course understand that especially smaller van life channels need to do what they can to get views, especially if the KZread income is what makes van life possible for them, and that means painting a picture that isn't always a very accurate representation of reality. Glam sells, people like seeing only the highlights, the pretty sunsets, serene meditation in a light summer rain, a midnight swim in a moonlit lake, a cup of hot chocolate by a fire. I don't hold it against them, but at the same time I personally prefer more down to earth and honest van life channels.

It is nice to hear the "other side of van life". During the pandemic, I have become rather addicted to travel videos, camping, van life, and so on. I also fantasied about it myself. Bought a bit of camping gear and took a few trips. Very nice I enjoyed it. But full-time on the road? No, I think that would be a huge commitment. I would only do it if I had a home base that I could return to when I get burned out. I am almost 60 and I can see how a 20-year-old might think, but my real awakening was when some friends that were living in a Sprinter came for a visit. I was shocked at how small the space really is. In the videos somehow it seems larger. It is a really small space. Anyway, It is good to be realistic... leave it to a couple of Brits to speak to the downside ...hehe...hahaha. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it immensely.

@@RunningOffGrid I could see it as an option for a solo option. The van I saw was just too small for two people. My wife and I are well adjusted and could actually pull it off, but I think most couples have no idea the level of stress living in a small space can induce.

Another option is to downsize to a small flat or house, buy a van with a separate bathroom, and spend much of the time travelling. Best of both worlds, in many ways.

Places I'd never have any chance of getting to. I follow a number of channels like yours - Jilts Into The Sunset, Wee Broon Van and Travel Beans. All very different but unlike you, never show or discuss the difficulties you talked about. That's why I love your channel - it's honest and it shows real life living permanently in a van. You are right about the constant need to make decisions whilst on the road, I still end up changing my mind countless times every day. Left Leeds on this trip planning on going to Wales then down the west coast all the way to Devon and Cornwall for the winter, somehow I ended up in Great Yarmouth and am loving being in Norfolk. They are much better decisions to make than the ones about going to work and whether to do overtime.

Great video. I've been there. 2 years in my van. Early 2020 covid, what a nightmare. It's all true. It can be a lonely experience. The sun doesn't shine every day. When it rains its miserable. Being able to stand up straight in your van is very important. Be very careful where you choose to spend the night. Most people don't like vandwellers.

Nice to get your reply ' running off grid'. We have no real fixed plans at the moment and are staying inbetween the van and relatives until we get the van properly sorted! We are still in the process of keeping what we need in the van and storing what we don't!! So hard to downsize and not be overweight. We are hoping to get to Wales next month for our maiden voyage and possibly get over to Spain later in the year. Be great to bump into you both sometime. Happy adventures. 😊

When I see all these KZread van lifers I simply cannot believe it’s all sunshine and rainbows. The prices of these vans are also quite staggering in the US.

We've just come to the end of our first year and I can relate to pretty much everything you've said. There have been days when I would happily have driven home, luckily no full blown arguments but I think that's because we're a bit older, both 55, and there's not much left to argue about. As for data use. Get a local SIM in whatever country your in. If you sign up for pay monthly you can us your allowance in the EU. Yes you'll need an address in the country your in but ask a friendly campsite owner. If not get a PAYG SIM for each country. Keep an accounts book and write everything down, keeping track of your weekly/monthly spending helped us a lot with sticking to a budget. Most of all take a moment every now and then to remind yourself just how fortunate you are. Life is very short, don't waste time worrying about the little things. I really enjoyed this video some great thoughts especially about your mental health on the road. Oh and get a dog! I recommend a miniature poodle 👍

This was really good and everyone needs to ponder all these topics you've brought up. I thought of another one and that's health care. As a person getting into my senior years I need to be aware that medical issues can come about more frequently than when I was younger. Luckily I have been a very healthy person but I need to be aware that illness and accidents can happen and when on the road you need to figure out how you're going to handle that situation when it comes up. Does most of Europe have socialized medicine or National Health Service like the UK? Thanks for sharing with us.

That's a very good point and something that does need to be considered. Different countries have different systems and you really need seperate insurance.

Most places in Europe you can by most medication ie antibiotics over the counter, if you take regular drugs if you take a copy of your prescription plus your passport you can buy them the cast can be minimal a lot less than our prescription charge but some can be expensive.

Three of the most important things to consider, Robbery, Serious illness & traffic accidents! All 3 could unfortunately affect your vanlife especially when you are abroad, after 2 years living in our van and then trips through North Africa we did experience all 3!!! Also if traveling in self made Campervans be warned customs do look harder at you for potential smuggling especially if traveling back from the likes of Morocco. Enjoy but be ready, one last tip never drive into a secluded park up, reversing in means you can drive out if quickly if you need too. 😎

@@christinewood8331 Morocco is still a hot spot for drugs mainly cannabis and customs do check campervans that have been self built due to possible concealment places within the van, also be aware that local police & customs can demand money or fines on the spot for rules that you aren’t aware of!!! Generally travel is ok but our rule of thumb was if you ask someone for assistance or information generally they are fine, but if they approach you, be careful! We found that whatever deal you struck when buying something they always wanted a “gift” after you had agreed a price! Enjoy your trip, and check out other van lifers vids on KZread that have been. 😎

Watching these van-life video makes my one bedroom flat feel like a mansion. I'm not sure I could cope mentally or physically with living in a small van. A motor home would perhaps be better but would be out of my price range for a decent sized vehicle. I thought about a narrow boat but when researching that lifestyle it's also very expensive.

I think the key is to travel to warm places and then the van is just a tool to get around and sleep in. Small space but worlds biggest garden as they say. Wet cold days can be miserable and difficult.

I loved the video but it's not for me I have a 300 dollar a month efficiency including so I'll stay put. Why I wouldn't do it Safety Parking Pets Air conditioning and heating problems Gas prices I like stay at put brick n mortar and also I don't want to out my possessions in storage that would cost me about 200 a month so than what's the point but u both are doing great ,stay safe please

Maybe try to downsize to a 1 ROOM and see how you feel with that. It might be better than you expect. That's what I'm doing right now, I'm slowly downsizing and I have to say I'm happier living in this tiny 1 room studio apartment than I was in my poky 1 brm unit - I'm more efficient in my use of space here and the balcony makes a HUGE difference. I figure that's a little like vanlife - you might sleep in a tiny space but your life overflows into the great outdoors

A great video - and a nice change from the 'usual 'vanlife' style. You give a very well balanced view of life travelling in a van. Your mention of UK campsites resonated - I've often found the owners/managers can be quite unfriendly, with restrictive hours for checking in too. I first lived in a van as a student in the late 1970's! Happy travels to you!

@@RunningOffGrid Thanks for your reply and interest in my 1970's 'vanlife' - after falling through the floorboards of a student flat in Newcastle and nearly being gassed in another, I had the idea of buying what was then a cheap VW Mk1 camper, but ended up with a more practical (although not as a future investment!) and even cheaper 1959 Austin J2, with aluminium coachbuilt body. I christened it 'Plod' for obvious reasons - and parked up on the hall of residence car park - where I'd easy access to bathroom and other facilities! Managed to live in Plod for over a year before being discovered by the university authorities! I loved 'vanlife', full cooker, two long bench seats/beds, purple carpet in the cab and 'shagpile' (1970's!) in the back - even though insulation hadn't been thought of, a gearchange the wrong way around and brakes that required 'anticipatory' driving. Fun times! Your van has luxuries I couldn't have dreamed of........what a lovely lifestyle you have!

This is an excellent video and subject matter. I watch vanlife videos as a oddly fulfilling hobby. I have been repeatedly freaked out by the sudden sullen sulking of MANY van lifers. You can watch the sadness permeate through the screen. Then they get a dog and they are happy again or they get a new van and they're happy again. I love how you have presented the "cons" which are all necessary for consideration when thinking about vanlife, but in a positive way. I have seen youtube video's where it really is very negative and whining moaning minnies, and it doesn't give you a clear view of what to consider or whether its just them. Great vlog done and good to see the real side of campervaning. Ive tried it and know about the confined space & there being the two of us & pets too. We learned alot as we travelled across Europe. I guess going solo will be even harder to do & mentally too. Thanks for the honest side of it Coz there will novices out there and it will help. X 🐾💕

Great video. I'm guessing all this also depends on whether you're doing this by choice, or because you're one of the people living in your vehicle because you can no longer afford an apartment. The latter seems to be happening more and more people, and that is scary.

I'm not into the van life, but I loved this video for it's honesty. I like to camp up mountains, but I also realise it's hard work doing it and organising it, but could be led to believe it's easy by some youtubers for instance. I like the way you point out the little things that seem so easy to most but can be a hinderance if you let it. I'll definitely be following your trips and adventures. ATB Leigh.

Loved you two, what a couple. 😊 We own a canal boat and the first thing you realise is how responsible you are with your water, waste, fuel and food. It's much easier than vanlife but we are taking the plunge as part time campers and you've opened our eyes to whats coming 🤣 Thanks for your real outlook and have a great journey. 👍

I lived in my boat for a year, and after moving back on land i really miss it, not even because of the sailing, but because of the simplicity. when thats said, there's SOO many things i dont miss ;P would still love to do it half time (winter in denmark is cold), but that doesnt make sense economically

Good advice and things to think about for van lifers for sure.

I love your honesty! Permanent living in a space where I can't stand upright with at least 8 inches or 20 cm space over my head would kill me. And searching for a sleeping place every day, sitting way to much time all day long etc. also does not sound really good. And don't even think about being sick. If you are young, healthy and very well organized it may be nice and working but only if you don't want to raise kids.

I hired a van for a week-end in Fontainebleau (50 km from my home) for the experience and because I was dreaming of buying a van. The fuel costs of the week-end blew my mind and cured my dream!

The real issue is land ownership, housing and no one can afford it or able to buy and build their own home. Van lifers is becoming a neccessity against homelessness is how I view it. Vanlife is the new term for new age travellers!! Much love to you both xx

Great honest video, addressing lots of points we don't nomally see portrayed. I'm not looking to vanlife full time or anything close but many of these points are still relatable. Thank you for the very refreshingly honest take on Van Life. A lot of it when it comes to decision fatigue for example resonates with my experience in backpacking 20 years ago. I'm looking to have a van build as my new business will need me to travel the UK extensively and I hate impersonal hotels etc. Thank you for the video. Much appreciated.
