Same as Doctors and Presidents; you call them the title although they're retired. Floyd fought Canelo BEFORE he was a belt holder, but Canelo went on to win many titles and is therefore now called "champ" out of respect. The only "weakness" of floyd is lack of combinaison. I know, I know, he hits hard, fast, but he is not really commited to offense most of the time. He has an extraordinary defense and he is incredible at counter-attacking, but like GSP in MMA, he is prone to choose low risk tactics. I always said this was one of Floyd's most toughest fights of the latter part of his career. I think Floyd knew Cotto's fighting style would be problematic for his own style. I remember watching the build up and noticing he had a lot of nervous energy at the weigh in. He even called a last sparring session at 1am in the morning, the night before the fight. No doubt that Floyd won the fight, but I'm sure he woke up the next morning in agony. His face was also visibly damaged after the fight. A very rare experience for him.
