Fujifilm X-T5 Digital Teleconverter - Why You Should Use This SLEEPER FEATURE! 📸 💪 ❤️

Welcome to #Fujifriday ! I'm going to do my best to upload a Fujifilm related video each Friday... we will see how it goes!
Did you know that your Fujifilm X-T5 (and many other Fuji cameras) have a built in digital teleconverter? I used to think this was just a gimmicky feature but in this video I am going to explain why this is a VERY useful feature you should try out.

    Hey all, a viewer pointed out that I used the 4:3 crop ratio instead of the 3:2 ratio for JPEGS. SO, the resolution using the digital teleconverter will actually be a bit higher than I said in the video when using the standard 4:3 ratio. Medium JPEG (5472 × 3648) = 19.96 megapixels Small JPEG (3888 × 2592) = 10.08 megapixels Thanks for spotting that, Gerhard!

    cool idea, what I likely will do is make C7 Q-menu setting for using this as I normally shoot only RAW...and whatever further settings I want for this situation. I used to have a 100V digital converter was different in that camera

    This is also useful for saving storage space when using JPG only and 40 mp is overkill (e.g. social media). This can also help when the memory card is almost full, as it helps to get some extra 'mileage' out of the card. With a zoom lens, one can always zoom out if the extra reach is not wanted.

    Excellent video Peter. The essential assumption is that the lens has sufficient resolution so that the resulting image can be accurately mapped across the 40MP sensor. you demonstrated that Viltrox lens has this resolving capability. For myself I am planning to use this feature with the Sigma F2.8 18-50mm zoom which has a FF equivalent of 27-75mm. With the 2X crop I get 150mm FF equiv zoom. This substantially enhances the utility of the lens for travel purposes.

    Thank you Pete for the excellent video with real-life useful information about X-T5. I was using the Digital Tele Converter with Raw only to "see" the crop, but since I watched your video I am using it in RAW+FINE (JPEG), and that is giving me the crop directly. Wonderful results!

    A feature I appreciated a lot in the x100v and hoped would make it's way to the x-t5. Unfortunately, unlike with the x100v, I do notice reduced IQ when using it even with a lens like the 23 1.4 LM WR. Cropping afterwards, even in camera, gets better results. Adding a 2x in-camera crop (essentially what the teleconverter is) wouldn't turn the 75 1.2 into a 150 1.2 though. Distance from subject is arguably more important to DoF than the aperture, so the images will look completely different to a longer fast prime. For light gathering of course as you state. Another plus, however, when using a longer lens is that you get to increase the "effective focal length" without increasing any camera shake.

    A great feature that I recently discovered. But - 50 mm already is a 75 on a Fuji… (50x1.5) A 50 mm will be 105 with 1.4 converter (75x1.4) or 150 (75x2). And a 1.2 lens will not equal a 1.2 on full frame. 1.2 on Fuji is like 1.8 on FF. With digital converter it will be 2.5 (x1.4) and 3.6 (x2.0).

    Yes, but remember that the f stop conversion is a bit misleading. I mean it still confuses me too haha but from what I understand, the depth of field is converted, but the light input is not. I could be wrong honestly there are so many conflicting opinions about this. Thanks for watching!

    @@PeteCocoPhoto Exactly - there are many 'truths' regarding this. And even though the amount of light doesn't change, the image quality does. Image quality changes because the more you crop, the more the file needs to be enlarged to reach the same size as a FF image of any given size. In reality, this means that the noise level increases, so an image taken at, let's say, 6400 ISO with a Fuji and cropped 1.4x equals the noise level of an image taken with a full-frame at about 12,800 ISO. All given different results from different sensors, lenses etc.

    The digital teleconverter isn't changing the aperture rendering. You're correct that a 50mm 1.2 on a crop sensor will render as a 75mm 1.8 FF equivalent. Thats due to the physical limitations with the lens and the sensor size. With the digital teleconverter, you've already rendered the image and now you're just "zooming in"/post-cropping the photo. The zooms are still 105mm 1.8 and 150mm 1.8. Think of it this way, if you take a photo and cropped it on your phone, its not going to be darker.

    Excellent video...just found you and subscribed. I have been toying with the idea of purchasing a 1.4x tele convertor for my 70-300 and 100-400 lenses until I saw this. I think it is worthwhile to try this out first. My only concern in that I always shoot RAW and enjoy editing to my taste. This won't be possible using the digi convertor as it only produces jpegs. I never shoot jpeg for this reason but I will give it a go!! Also, is there any difference in quality, resolution and can you use RAW if I go with the tele convertor?

  • @PeteCocoPhoto

    @PeteCocoPhoto

    Thank you, Nigel! I think there's a place for this technique as well as for the teleconverter. The advantage of the physical teleconverter is you don't lose any resolution, so it's the best way to go regarding quality if you are doing a lot of sports/wildlife. Glad you subscribed, more videos coming soon!

    @@gregboyce360 I meant that when you take a wide shot, a middle shot and a portrait shot of the subject, like a 8mm, 16mm, 85mm, (just my opinion ) you have all the pictures you need, so to speak. and fujifilm made this easy when you can limit the size of the image already in the camera itself without changing the lens. @@miroslavpandza6002 exactly, then with a 2x digital crop it becomes a 225mm. That part is ok in the video but my point was on the aperture. In the video he mention that the f remains at f1.2 but that's not what I understand, it also has to be multiplied by 2 because of the digital crop and then 1.5 because of the aps-c sensor

  • @PeteCocoPhoto

    This is not actually a teleconverter but just an in camera digital crop. So basically you are cropping the image in camera instead of in post, meaning that you don't lose any light, just resolution. If you used a traditional teleconverter, then yes, you lose light. Regarding the 1.5x APS-C crop, you also do not lose light. A 1.2 is still a 1.2 but what changes is the depth of field. So a 1.2 on an APS-C sensor gives the depth of field of a 1.8 on ff (1.2 x 1.5 crop factor). Hope this clears it up!

    @@PeteCocoPhoto there is really no optical difference if it's a digital crop or non digital crop. The optical effect is the same in both but if done digitally you reduce the number of pixels (resolution).

  • @PeteCocoPhoto

    @PeteCocoPhoto

    Жыл бұрын

    @@RamonLinares An optical crop preserves the resolution, so technically that is better than a digital crop. An optical zoom will always be better than a digital zoom, for instance. What this feature does is simply crop in camera instead of in post. So, if I didn't use the 2x feature and cropped later on, the effect is basically the same as in the images I show.
