That was a good assessment of the H1 and also of the headwinds it faced on launch, even from Fuji itself. I got to hold one at Samys Hollywood just after launch and was impressed, especially with IBIS. I couldn't justify the price, but when they had a sale when they discontinued and I could buy a new gripped copy for $1k, I jumped on it and I'm really glad I did. I'd like to take this opportunity to share with you and your readers my experience with your sponsor KEH, who are headquartered anhour up the road from me. I had done business with KEH in the past and was impressed by their service and their conservative grading. I was approached by the art center at our church to teach a photography course to at risk teenage boys from a local home, which is a last chance for them to get straight before entering the youth detention system. I was glad to help and started to think how I could maximize their experience. There would be no more than 12 and I dreamed of each having their own camera to use for the class instead of having to wait their turn. The art center secured a grant to buy the equipment. I called KEH and told them of our plans and our budget. They were enthusiastic and said they would see what they could do. A few days later they called me up and told me they were able to put together 12 kits consisting of a Canon Rebel body (European market) plus an 18-55 kit lens and battery for each. The cameras were obviously used but in much better condition than I expected. I ran a test on each body and lens and they worked great. This was all pre-Covid and the boys and I met one afternoon a week for 6 weeks in the Fall. We kept the cameras at the art center, but they used the same camera each week. I taught them some basic camera care and a little basic photo skills. I had a lesson plan, but I pretty much scrapped it and gave the boys free reign just to play and have fun. They had a blast! Each week we'd view their photos from the prior week. It was fun to see their skills improve, plus see the world through their eyes. At the end the art center sponsored an exhibition of their work. Every boy was represented and we had a reception at the opening. They were very proud of their work and even sold some prints! This was possible because of the generous help provided by KEH. They are good folks!

Thank you and agree. As one who shoot in manual control with auto focus, and mainly photos, X-H1 got just enough dials for ISO, shutter speed and focus check, pairing with Aperture ring on the lenses that's just what all I need, and that's became worse on X-H2s. I like the X-H1 that it takes away the compensation dial (which is useless when shoot in manual) and add the e-Ink screen. That's simply the best camera control you can find. Just add the 40M sensor and the IBIS system on "X-H2" to the X-H1 body, 4K120 video, the 1/48 and 1/240s selection on the Shutter Speed dial, 21:9 video crop mode, and maybe 3 custom modes on the mode dial, and that's would be what the best next hybrid camera I am willing to pay more than the X-H2s.

I’m more than happy to hold on to my amazing and versatile X-T4. One day it’s hanging over my shoulder in a leather half case with a prime looking absolutely beautiful, the next it’s strapped to the battery grip with the 50-140 on the front.

Hello Hugh, I have been using the XH1 as my primary camera for event, portrait, and product photography for years. It continues to never let me down for stills, and even video, for clients will always add tasks and requests for video on site as the event progresses. With the battery grip, it balances the two red badge zooms (16-55 & 50-140), and the 80/2.8 macro splendidly. Alongside my XPRO3 (backup and candid camera) which usually has either the 33/1.4 or 50/1.0, I have never been left wanting in the field. If someone requires a reliable, solidly built camera, a good condition XH1 used should treat them well, as it has for me.

Great walkthrough with the XH1 - just can't wait for the XH2 with the 40mp sensor and new processor. My XT3 will be on it's way to make room for it!! I got my Xh1 3 weeks ago with grip & two batteries for $500 from some dad that used it for pics of his kids lol - perfect camera to backup my XT4 it even has less than 10k shutter clicks. Now I’ve been enjoying a little more than my XT4 for simple work cause of the ergonomics alone, feels better to hold.

I'm still amazed of how great is my X-T3 for pics and videos ;)

Like you, I find the X-H1 an excellent camera for stills. While I use with a Metabones speed booster and legacy 35mm lenses, getting razer thin DoF when required.

I’ll say it again. You’re my favorite photo channel on YT. Keep up the great content!….I just bought a XH1. I’m absolutely amazed by it. Sure it’s 4 years old, and not the latest and greatest, but if you put that out of your mind and go shoot, you realize what you actually need :)

I may have commented here a year after your post, Hugh, and wow, incredibly delivered that specs comparison. It did make my brain catching up in every model you mentioned 😀. I consider X-H1 the best buy now for a second hand. Having paired it with that 16-55/2.8.This provides me a better idea to start my photo business and continue my hobby as well. Whereas, my retirement from company in the next 2 years. Thank you for sharing.

Jus bought one, with the grip, 3 original batteries, manual, cables, box and whatnot in mint condition for 700 euros. I completely agree with you; what a steal! Much more camera than I would ever need. Great channel and great debate as usual. Thank you sir!

I picked up an x-h1 used, like new, about $850, two years ago, paired it with vintage tele glass for nature photography. It's really grown on me over time. Once I got Fuji glass for birding, I no longer needed the x-h1 IBIS but I've kept it around and still enjoy it. I think I appreciate it even more now that I see that PASM dial on the new model. My only real frustration is the tilt screen is obscured by the EVF, as with the x-t models.

Thought about upgrading but I'm keeping it stills are amazing and focus is amazing as well for stills despite doing very dance photography it never has failed me For video it even has timecode mostly for work i use my pocket 4k but xh1 some time just surprises me with how good it Hadles noise and over all good image quality in video if exposed well

If you get a chance, could you talk about how the Fujifilm X-S10 stands in todays offering by Fujifilm line-up and when compared to other brands APS-C cameras?

Just shot with my XH1 last week. Still my favorite Fuji body. It could be because of the grip alone. IQ is awesome. IBIS is great. I didn't care for the xt3 or 4 that much. I'm sticking with this XH1. Idk if the XH2 is even for me. Its overkill and overpriced.

I am wondering the same also. I traded my xpro3 for XT4. Mostly as i needed a grip for events. But the XT4 is kinda cheap with a weird layout. Nice sensor tho. I am not wondering about the XH series. The xh2 might be overkill. But I am moving on video a bit more.

My XH1 with battery grip was purchased a few years ago when Fuji had that great deal on, I think body and grip for $1100USD or $1600 Canadian. Was a steal! That XTrans3 sensor paired with the 16-55mm is money for landscape work and renders B&W Acros jpegs that are out of this world (even make ya wanna give up your Leica monochromes). It's a camera that will stand the test of time I believe, maybe the best APSC camera yet from Fuji all things being equal. Oh, and I love my XPro3 and all my other Fuji bodies and glass, great system.

I really don't use video, so the XH-1, which I bought used, probably didn't make a lot of sense. However, since them I've found that the in camera stabilization and larger grip size (vs. my XPro3) is much appreciated when using my larger zoom lenses. Oddly, I even like to use it with my f/2 primes on occasion. PS. I loved your panning upward picture from stairs to skyscrapers!!!

Def not a professional but X-H1 is my first camera. I bought it for the hybrid aspect and at the time it was the only Fuji x body with stabilization. I was essentially trying to see what kind of shooter I was. 3 years later I use the camera more for photography and use my phone for video as I only post things on social media. But for photos I have made some prints and def enjoy the look and feel of a dedicated camera. The current H line is def not for me and I’m thinking of going down to the T line once they drop a new one. For video again I think I’ll stick to my phone or an action cam. Nothing tho replaces the nostalgic feeling of the Fuji photos. Those colors. 😍

My x100v , xt2 and xt10 are my Fuji bodies. However I’m watching cause I love listening to you talk and you have great hair ☺️

This really helps vindicate my concerns about holding onto my X-H1-even after also buying the X-T4-rather than buying the X-H2S. But then, I still have and treasure my X-T2-my first love and introduction to Fujifilm X-Series Interchangeable (after my very first X30). The X-H1 really is a fantastic camera though-I bought a Smallrig cage for it and have shot some amazing video with it, and of course the photography on the X-H1 has always been a sublime experience. Gotta love that smooth-like-butter shutter button!

@@TheChzehao87 It always was. Just because something new and better comes out, doesn't mean the previous isn't still fully capable of accomplishing the same things as before. Especially for the price. If you're on a budget, the X-H1 is still feature-packed.

@@TheChzehao87 I'm pretty sure the X-H1 will become your 1st cam, lol. The X-T30 is more compact, sure. But the X-H1 has a more robust feature set than merely IBIS. If you're already familiar with the X-series system and software, then you should have no problem learning the features the X-H1 offers. And if you can snag a lightly used one for less than 1K, I can't imagine you ever not being satisfied with your investment. If anyone says it's not a capable video shooting device, they clearly don't know how to use it properly. The X-H1 was my main camera for two years (after my X-T2 went in for repairs) while enrolled at Loyalist College, in the largest college level photojournalism program in Ontario/Canada. I did fantastic photos AND small video documentary features with the X-H1 on a regular basis. I've since upgraded to my alumni present, the X-T4, but I haven't let go of my X-H1 yet, if ever. To me, it's just that good, even as a backup now. All the best on your photo adventures!

There's also the X-S10 although the differences are marginal from the spec sheet (in practice, I don't know), I think either would be great depending on availability and price. X-H1 doesn't exist where I am in the used market and the X-S10 is cheaper new vs importing. I upgraded (side stepped?) from the X-T30 to X-S10 and the body usability alone was worth the switch.

Am I missing it on their website, or do they openly not measure/publish shutter actuations?

Just picked one up from KEH, used, of course, for a song, and, Oh, baby! I'm keeping my 5D iv for a little longer as it is a great tool, but the X-H1 is such a joy. Thanks for the public service announcement even though it's 2024.

The dials + Ibis + old Canon FD lenses and the endless film recipes to play with. Seriously the best stills experience, possibly only rivalled by the XT4 today. I just love picking it up, putting an old lens on and just shooting anything. Seeing the PASM direction with the XH2, The XH1 is the camera I never want to sell. Using vintage glass and film recipes with this thing has made me start an FD lens collection. I keep thinking about an XT4 upgrade but I'm better off buying lenses.

I got it because I liked the dials, found Fuji KZreadrs using vintage lenses and I’ve been falling down the rabbit hole. Have a 135 2.8 FD, and 50 1.8. Going to get a few more for videos I want to make. It’s so fun shooting manual now

@@itsbeaker6571 I have the 50 1.8, 35mm F2 which is are fantastic lenses. 80-200 F4 L, which i picked up real cheap but has a beautiful look to it. I really want the 24mm F2, 85mm and the 20mm 2.8. They're no where as sharp compared to my Fuji 18-55 kit lens but they all have a look I can't reproduce with modern lenses.

I’m seeing a lot of photographers selling their film gear and going back to digital. Last year I sold my X100 for 300.00. I thought about buying one again, they are now closer to 500.00 and not as many available for sale. It seems people are ditching the higher cost of film to return to analog style digital cameras.

the X-T3 had both the mic and headphone jack direclty on the body. Fuji used the USB-C adapter as headphone jack on the X-T4

I had my 90mm 2.0 on the X-H1, and today on my T-2. I was noticing on the T-2 that I couldn't get a (small spot) green box confirm of auto focus on an object about 8 feet away indoors in daylight room light on the H1.But when switching to manual I had no problems focussing on it, using everybody's bias, focus peaking assist with red in high mode. I tried getting into natural view mode to see if that helped in auto. No. Just the red box and a fail to focus. So I tried the T-2. No problem getting the green box and, aside from that, Natural view was a LOT brighter in manual and in auto. Interesting, no? Oh, I did both of these tests using the same Fuji flash, ISO at 250, of course. Another thing...2.0 was always very unacceptable. Shit. Stopped down to f4 was unbelievably sharp. All tests hand held with ibis on continuous, with flash at 1/250.

!! Yes. Take the xh1 sometimes/in parallel to 50R and Nikon Z7 with the old 56, the fabulous 90 and 16 - purchased it for 650 EUR.. For me, simply the perfect incarnation of Fuji's classic style with best APSC performance. It sounds.. a beauty!

I own a CL with the 35 ‘lux, but the X-H1 with XF 33/1.4 is, heritage and size aside, a more capable and far less expensive way to go.

4:20 That would be the X-T4 that required the dongle for the headphone jack. The X-T3 has dedicated mic and headphone jacks. In that specific feature, the X-T4 did feel like a step backward compared to the 3.

Hello, the question for me is to choose between the Lumix G9 and the Fujifilm XH-1. Have you been able to use these cameras with the 100-400 telephoto lenses (Lumix 100-400 / XF 100-400)? Does the XH-1 give good results with fully manual lenses (Leica M)? thanks

Yes and yes. Both work well! If you lean toward for stills, I’d go X-H1 for the 14-but capture; if you lean toward video, I’d go Panasonic, but I’d you lean stills, don’t print mongo and prefer lighter weight, I’d go G9 as well given those long focal lengths you’re considering. Then again, I prefer the XF 100-400 if you need the extra reach.

As to second hand price, now you can even get it for around $600. And it's really a bargain. And I personally disagree that you should think of this camera as a photography tool, it's a dual purpose camera. 100% Yes, doesn't record video in 10bit, but it records video in 8bit. In very good quality. And as long as you don't have to be extreme with color grading (because you shoot your videos in proper lighting environment) you will always get amazing video shots.

Thanks for this video, I remember trying this camera when I was in the shop looking at a Nikon D750 (Which I originally bought because I had the lenses) I've just been offered a beautiful XH-1 with a genuine grip and 3 batteries for £375 which seems a bargain (5.9k shutter clicks) and I am sorely tempted because I have a whole bunch of Fuji lenses at my disposal now. I specifically looked for a video about if it was still a relevant camera for today, and your video was really helpful :) Thank you...

I bought my copy durning the fire sale of 2019 / 2020, and that camera is so good for what I do that I'll never sell it. Works great in tandem with my X-T2. X-H2s is, at least for now, an overkill for what I do. And the 40MP version? Hmmm... I'll rather spend that money towards anything from GFX line...

I am wanting to trade my xt4, which is still brand new, for a X-H body. I wonder if the XH2S should be the one or the XH1. It would just be a journaling and event photography camera for me. 5-10 events a year. I wonder…

I have no problem forgiving the shortcoming in resolution, considering that most professional work in the early 2000s was done with far less resolution, including billboards! X-H1 is well worth NOT upgrading to the X-H2 for a while, since all I use it for is still photography!

I have an x-pro2, considering a h1 as second body

I am torn by this. I sold my XF kit last year to buy the GFX100S. I shoot/write mostly food and editorial headshots/lifestyle for local publications and love the GFX (mostly with 45-100). I have an R5 kit for wildlife which is more a hobby, but WILL work with the R5 on occasion. What I missed was my XF kit for travel. I had an X-H1 and the X-Pro2 and decided to go back and re-acquire cameras I missed. The X-Pro2 won out. With the 16-80 and 55-200 I have two good travel lenses with OIS. It would seem redundant to ADD an X-H1, as much as I love that body, being as the two lenses I use most have OIS. I'd never see a difference in the files, and I never shoot video. I know you also like the X-Pro2, thoughts in comparing the two as used bargains? BTW, I love your videos, and I don't say that lightly. Your command of the language is impressive and refreshing.

Even as an X-T4 owner I’ve been tempted to swap for an X-H1 for the ergos that I think I’d prefer. I’m worried that I’d regret the battery life and AF though. So instead I think I’ll wait and see how the X-H2 (non-S) and/or X-T5 shake out.

I CONCUR! I just bought this camera and x-t1 because it was under 300.00. For 1800 I got x-h1, x-t1, 18-55 f2.8-4 and a new 23mm f2. I am like sheesh I should have bought this a long time ago. I like the x-h2s but I don't like the flip to screen. Everything else is great or incredible. My needs fit this camera more. love your episodes and keep them coming!!!!!

Had noted the increased number x-h1s on the market. Managed to bag one and a grip and 35 f2 wr for something like $950 US (1550 NZD), sold my venerable x-e1 and x-t1 to offset the cost. Its shutter count is 2k. So hunters can get lucky. Ebay will get the seller the best likely price is suspect. The bigger the market the more punters with cash etc...

I'm bragging- In the box minty with battery grip, 700, and it was done at a cafe. No tax. The screen lag around 12 seconds can throw you if you don't use the grip. Funny, I had mine about 10 weeks, and I've never turned the touch screen on... try the Natural View on it with vintage lenses.

The X-H1 is a great workhorse photography camera. I don't mind what it lacks in video because I rarely shoot video. The prices are so low, I bought a spare body and battery grip. And in an age where most people just share photos online, 24mp is more than enough.

If ur fastest moving subject is a tree this is a great camera, I'd throw away my XT4 sometimes for the weak autofocus performance

The price of the XH2 is hard to swallow. When the XH1 dropped from $3300 AUD to $1300 on line it was and is the bargain of the century. Add the 23mm f1.4 and it is a perfect street camera. And now I went and bought an Olympus EM5 with a LUMIX 14mm f2.5. Will it ever end?

@@RealTechGeek It does have some amazing capability - 40 fps in RAW etc. It is much more than the crop sensor wars. Plus it will attach to the new (?) to 600mm zoom - the lens which is about $4000 - and no FF camera can give you that reach at that frame rate for that money

Bought a XH1 for $600. It came with the Fuji 35f2, a nonfuji 50 f1.1 and nonfuji 135 with an adapter. Bought an excellent condition battery grip from MPB for $55. I’m happy with it. The XH1 is not my 1st choice for street as it is chunky & heavy for this use case. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

So did the X-H1 lock up on you? It was a terrible experience especially with flash photography. The files detail are fantastic.

Never understood why there was never an xtrans 4 sensor based xh camera. Instead giving us 2 xt based x trans 4 bodies while diluting the xt line’s photography features, i.e. body size, flip out screen, absent photometry dial. Now we are going to have a 40 mp xt5 WITHOUT a backlit sensor…dunno folks…

How many megapixels does one truly need? Isn't this just a number/metric that the manufacturers are installing in us to stoke our already obsessive desire for gear acquisition? Unless the images are being blown up to enormous sizes, 24/26 mp is enough for most genres of photography. Personally, I think the X-H1 is a camera that was marketed too soon, it was before its time. I have both the X-H1 and X-T3. My intention was to sell the X-T3, however, I have found that both cameras fit my needs but for different situations. The 2 things that stand out are the IBS and in-camera image staking, which the T3 does not have, and thus marries up especially well with lenses such as the XF 16-55 f/2.8. The grip is also more comfortable when carrying around and/or with longer lenses. Bang for the buck it is a hard camera to beat and should not get the flack it does just because Fuji screwed up its marketing.

Having worked with 2XH1 almost daily since 2018 I honestly can say I will not part with them, even now that I just added a Xh2 (that's another story). The built quality alone is worth the admission. Go get one if you are a hybrid shooter.

Your reviews are always awesome! I hope you will forgive me for pointing out that you look like Brendan Fraser's and Jeff Goldblum's love child...

I have bought a beautiful X-H1 for a bargain 6 months ago and I’m still wondering: “what’s wrong with this camera?”

I am going to agree and disagree with you on certain things. Certainly the X-H1 did come out with a lot of competition, particularly the a7III. But there are a few things which you did not mention, that certainly hurt the camera on release. First and most importantly, the firmware upon release was not up to standard. There were various issues, with the camera freezing up and the AF was not that good. It took a few months before 1.10 fixed the issues but of course the camera still was not as good as everyone hoped and certainly not on a level with the X-T3 upon release. Probably the biggest upgrade was firmware update 2.0 which made a massive difference to the camera and really made it the camera most people hoped it would be upon release. Unfortunately, by then it was too late and the price over the next year plummeted, in the Uk from £2000 upon release to £1000 a year or so later. As for video. Yes, the micro HDMI was a pain (mine did break, fortunately Fujifilm fixed it for free) but I will say for video, the X-H1 was not as bad as you made it sound, though there are issues. The battery pack was needed but not just because of the headphone jack. More importantly, the battery life was terrible and you really did need 3 batteries at least (and even then I did find over heating issues, when on location). You only got 8 bit 4.2.0 internally But the positive was, you got f log and eterna which was very good and externally 8 bit 4.2.2 which whilst not as good as 10 bit was good enough for most of my needs.

I come here, not for jurisprudence guidance, but perhaps for a mentor that can support me (or perhaps even intervene electronically) with my chronic G.A.S. attacks. Let's get real. Whether you like it or not, cameras in 2022 have became true hybrids, and in video, having 10 bit 4.2.2 (internally) is the new normal. Sorry X-H1. As for me personally, am waiting patiently for 12-14 bit 4.4.4, internally. No real need for raw.

Technically well-made videos. My only real criticism would be- the very 'mannered' delivery style distracts from the actual content. I think either make a video where the cameras are the stars, or make an acting showreel video. Merging both things together seems a bit of a compromise, and can be slightly off-putting. Don't slam me for this comment, I do like the presenter.

I've had an X-H1 since they dropped the price after launch and have loved using it ever since. The way it handles, the dials, the shutter button and even the shutter sound all make it such a joy to use. I've tried other cameras that offer better image quality and technology but I always miss the X-H1 when I'm not using it. It's a lovely camera.
