Fuji to Nikon: Finding Fun in Photography Again

It's been a while!
One of the things I've been busy with is switching from the Fujifilm system to the Nikon Zf and Zfc as my primary working (gig) cameras.
Why? Well, you can read about the specifics in this article: jmpeltier.com/nikon-vs-fujifilm/
But what's more important is knowing that if you ever stumble into any creative roadblocks or photography isn't fun anymore, it's essential to identify why.
For me, the why was the gear. Fujifilm has changed, and so have I. It was time I took the blinders off, and just in time as the Nikon Zf was released.
Are you in the same boat?

    Thanks for your thoughtful reflections, John. As a Fuji and Nikon user, I can relate to your sentiments. I was intrigued by your comment about not liking to press a button and then spin a dial to change ISO or exposure on the “SLR-like” Z cameras because the design of the new GFX 100 II seems to be very “Nikon-like” with the three topside buttons and the two on the front. Anyway, I’ve always appreciated your Fuji articles on your website but I’m excited that I get to appreciate your Zf articles now as well.

    Yeah I stay in Aperture Priority most of the time for what I do and use EC a lot. Having to press a "shift key" to do that always annoyed me and I much prefer a dedicated dial. Happy to see this on some Nikon cameras now.

    I have made the opposite trip. From a d7200 to the XS20... and I'm quite happy. Although the image quality produced by the Nikon's sensor is clearly superior, I love Fuji's film simulations and colors. I also love the range of good lenses it has, including very very cheap high quality options.

    Is the fun photographer talking about us just experience the different setup and possible an escape than forward looking and the typical modern PASM dials setup might be the fun for someone started and used the dedicated classic dials setup for long or the classic dials setup is only or mainly the likely setup to have the fun experience? I hope Sony or other camera companies who to jump on the nostalgia train do something forward thinking, new original way to photograph yet fun at the same time and not just either the modern or the classic

    Sorry, I phrased that badly. I didn't mean to criticize your video at all. I hope it didn't sound like that. I totally get that switching systems can bring the spark of fun back into photography. Just for the pure joy of learning a new system, which forces us to see things fresh again. At least for a while. The point I wanted to make was more that the actual brand of camera used is not as important as it seems. I had Canon, I had Fuji, I had Sony. According to marketing completely different end-points of the spectrum of "camera philosophy". But I found that in the end the brand didn't matter that much to my photos at all. And I'm sure very few people looking at my photos can tell what brand of camera I've used. I know my images suck with all three systems in a very similar way :-)

    @@robinb5752 oh it's all good, I've just been getting a lot of hate over the past month from some Fuji fans, but such is the Internet :) Over the past 20 years I've used every major camera brand except Olympus and agree none have been "objectively better"; the only thing that made my photos "better" was improving what's happening behind the viewfinder. It's all subjective and based on the individual user experience.

    Fuji does not change. There are a few new PASM cameras as the X-H2 and the X-S20. But we have a X-T5. X-E5, X-T40, X-Pro 4 and X100V are coming. No reason to change into a another system without native retro lenses.

  • @PeltierPhoto

    @PeltierPhoto

    7 ай бұрын

    All of those new cameras are just rumors as of now. Fuji has made some drastic changes between models; look at the X-E3 and X-E4, same with the GFX line - all new GFX cameras changed to PSAM dials, ditching the exposure dials found in the first gen. And their Custom Setting system found in all new cameras is garbage for everyone who loved using them for "film recipes" and only film recipes - a considerable portion of the user base. All of those were some massive changes. Native Z lenses still have functional aperture rings (programmable control rings). They don't click or have inscriptions like Fujinon lenses, but the functionality is the same - and that's all I care about; the "retro looks" are secondary to function for me. I'm still keeping my old Fujifilm X cameras & lenses - those are still fun to use, like to throw the X100V over my shoulder and hit the street. But as a camera to grow into for professional purposes, the writing on the wall tells me Nikon will serve me better.

    @@PeltierPhoto If by change you mean Fuji have broaden their horizons, then yeh. I mean, there was a time when the XT3/4 were dominating, but at the same time the XS10 and XH1 existed along side (but overlooked by many, or forgotten). Now we have their successors and they are doing very well and so those more fond of the analogue style are shouting and proclaiming that the brand has changed... which I think is a little harsh. If there was a mistake to be had by Fuji it was the XT5. They cheaped out on it. It should have had support for a battery grip and a better EVF, possibly even a stacked sensor version for those still shooters who did professional work under ambient light. But I guess it is just not possible to keep the same slim compact form factor with this tech, Fuji are nearing the limit of their retro design to tech ratio (the XH2/S are practically FF camera sized and weight!). But yeh, they should not be breaking their line into 'tiers', they should just make good cameras and I really feel for the XT fans because they underdelivered on the XT5, not enough of an upgrade over the XT4 (which was flagship). I like that Fuji expanded and gave us working pros some pro PASM cameras, but in doing so they kinda kicked their core base in the face by giving it a meh update. Hopefully it is a one off sin, XPro 4 and X100VII IS CONFIRMED for 2024 and perhaps an XT6 will remedy where they lacked with the 5. What I find most saddening is things like the Custom modes on the XH line. Whilst I appreciate a single turn of a dial evokes multiple core changes (such as drive mode, AF points, AF.C/S/M etc etc), I can really sympathise with those that preferred a simple set up and wanted just IQ changes to occur. Something like this should be so EASY to implement with a f/w update and an option in the menu to toggle how Custom Modes behave. With Pentax I think they had it as a 'Memory' menu and you ticked boxes on/off as to what things switching Custom Modes would toggle or leave alone (Pentax really do not get enough credit). Personally the XH2S has kept me with the Fuji system. It's stacked sensor is a life saver for the work I do, to get that piece of tech elsewhere is twice the price!

    @@SummersSnaps Hey Eddy! Thank you for your thoughtful response. "Broadening horizons" may benefit the company but not all of its customers, which is true in every industry. I fall into the crowd of grumpy people who do not benefit from this :) The change in how Custom Settings operate was a HUGE loss and disruption for me. No matter how often I try to explain this, those who did not get into Fujifilm specifically for the JPG styling options will never understand how detrimental this change was to those who did. It's not that I'm just upset and crying in the corner; the change has actually caused me to make errors during assignment work because of how engrained my muscle memory was from previous models. I've given the new system two years, which is more than enough for a fair shake. I'm having more success starting from scratch with the Nikon Zf than trying to remember how my T5 works differently than my T4. Why don't I just stick with the T4? As mentioned in the article, I'm trying to "skate where the puck is going," as Frederick Van Johnson says, rather than hanging on to old equipment as long as possible for professional work. And 40MP? Why? Give me a solid camera with 24ishMP and I'm a happy camper. The X-H2S was a huge release, and its success is a testament to the design and the photographers benefitting from that, as you point out. I just wish I was one of them so I could stick with the system :)
