Fuel Blog Part 10 - Shell Results - Conflicting Numbers

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today, I filled up using Petro Canada 87 octane. I figured I might as well try some different fuel grades as well to see what numbers I get. Results tbd
The Shell results are very conflicting. From a fuel economy perspective, Shell had the worst fuel economy numbers of any gas I have used thus far. But conversely, I also had one of the best driving experiences, with smooth idle and lots of get-up-and-go. If not for the fuel econ numbers, this would have been near the top!
1. Petro Canada
Mileage - 134.2 kms
L/100km - 14.9
MPG - 15.8
Pros - Combusts well in the higher RPM range, average combined fuel economy.
Cons - erratic idle, hesitates in the low RPM range, acceleration feels average
2. Costco Canada
Mileage - 127.9 kms
L/100km - 15.6
MPG - 15.1
Pros - Smooth acceleration across the entire RPM range, smooth idle, acceleration surges nicely
Cons - average fuel economy
3. Mobil
Mileage - 113.7 kms
L/100km - 17.6!
MPG - 13.4!
Pros - Car started and drove, and didn't blow up!
Cons - Poor Idle, poor power across RPM range, rough idle, engine much louder than normal, terrible fuel economy
4. Canadian Tire
Mileage - 146.0 kms
L/100km - 13.7
MPG - 17.2
Pros - Fantastic Fuel Economy, Smooth idle, engine did not have to work hard, great power band in both low and high RPM ranges, car takes off while barely touching the accelerator
Cons - At this point, none that I can see.
5. Pioneer
Mileage - 126.5 kms
L/100km - 15.8
MPG - 14.9
Pros - Car drove just fine, decent fuel economy, smooth through the entire RPM range
Cons - Not a lot of complaints, but it was not outstanding results compared to others.
6. Esso
Mileage - 132.9 kms
L/100km - 15.1
MPG - 15.6
Pros - Great Fuel economy, smooth idle, great acceleration and top end speed
Cons - One of the more expensive fuel companies in my area.
7. Husky
Mileage - 118.0 kms
L/100km - 17.0
MPG - 13.8
Pros - average drivability throughout the RPM range.
Cons - Poor Fuel Economy, engine was very loud when accelerating, very rough, slightly erratic idle.
8. Shell
Mileage - 111.7 kms
L/100km - 17.9
MPG - 13.1!
Pros - Excellent drivability, smooth RPM range, quiet engine, excellent power through the RPM range
Cons - The current title holder for the worst fuel economy numbers in this entire test.

I have an Acura and I find when I use shell gas the car runs smooth, but the gas doesn’t last long, same with Petro Canada. When I use pioneer, I find the gas lasts way longer but the car is a little sluggish at accelerating but does still drive smooth once it gets up to a steady speed. With Canadian tire I notice the gas lasts long, the car has good acceleration where I don’t have to step as hard to get moving.

Interesting. I found similar results with difference fuels as well, and found especially found Canadian Tire to be the most ideal for my vehicle. Seems to be the same for your Acura too. It can vary from company to company (my dads Trailblazer works best with Costco, it seems). Thanks for sharing your experience too. Awesome info!
