It was a big decision to not freeze my eggs. Here are a few thoughts and what this decision has meant.

I am 16, and I'm soon to start T. I'm choosing to freeze my eggs just in case. It's hard to delay my T process but I don't want to regret it.

I'm 14 and I'm going to be freezing my eggs in a month. I want to start blockers already but I know I'll be happy in the future that I froze eggs before starting blockers and then T in case I want a biological child

Oh god, I now just saw this. I didn't end up doing it, my clinic never referred me unfortunately. And, I said I could wait, but I ended up just saying "fuck it.." Even for IVF, I think freezing eggs is a difficult process. I'm almost 21 now and 4 years on T. We'll see if my eggs are in shambles in the future lmao. I'm no where ready to have kids yet, and my IUD doesn't expire for another 11 years lmao

I have a huge fear of being pregnant(the idea of having to push a human being out of my body squicks me out a ton, also y'know, dysphoria and such) so once I'm able to go on T I'm probably not gonna freeze my eggs

As an intersex woman, I'd be a high risk pregnancy. It would be possible, but I don't want to risk hurting myself and a belly child. I know there are lots of kids out there who need good homes, so I'll adopt one of them. Yes, there are risks to adoption and foster care, but those are predictable risks. Me getting pregnant is an unpredictable risk.

I agree, Jammi. There are lots of us who are sterile, who are missing parts of our reproductive system and therefore need to find other ways to experience being parents..

I definitely find it easier to imagine I never could have biologically had children than to dwell on the fact I chose not to, but I know I wouldn't have been able to afford it anyway. I think more importance should be put on it by the healthcare provider for younger transmen and transwomen before they decide to risk their fertility. They should definitely explain the options a lot more thoroughly. As you say, it's easy to ignore it when you're eager to start hormones but it's a decision that could be regretted later.

Heavy topic. I think I am still working through the grieving process of not being able to have biological children, as I didn't freeze my eggs and have had a hysto. I don't regret the path I've gone down but it really is something to think hard about before making these big decisions. Nice job with this video and sharing your experience. And thanks for bringing up the point about what helped you process it. Thinking about how cis men are not always fertile has helped me too and it's a great reminder.

This video means a lot to me Jaime, I just got back from my Gender Therapist and we were talking about me starting hormones because I should be starting late this month and this topic came up. I've been doing research on egg fertility in transmen and you made a very valid point by stating that fertility is not guaranteed regardless of being transgender or cis-gendered. Thank you so much!

you can still freeze your eggs after starting T, you just have to go off of T for a few months beforehand. Cayden Carter made some videos about his experience, thats exactly what he did

Jammi, none of us should look back and question decisions we have made in the past. We all suffer from selective memory and can never duplicate the mindset at the time. If we keep wondering about the past we will not focus on moving ahead and will stumble in the present moment. Be so happy to be where you are in the present moment..........Ray

+okimlistening2u I'm very happy with where I am now, I feel very lucky. This video was less of a questioning of my previous decisions and more a topic I would have found useful 5 years ago, and a discussion of my thought process at the time and how I feel now on this issue. Thank you for your comments, they are always incredibly nice and supportive :)

This video is really helpful to me; as a trans guy, I should be starting T soon, and I was worrying about this exact thing. I am quite young but I believe I have made my decision, and it is that 1. pregnancy would give me quite a bit of dysphoria, and 2. there are many different ways to have kids such as adoption. This channel has been so helpful to me in my transition, so thank you ❤

I’ve got my first appointment in the morning and I’m nervous, not because of the procedure or anything like that. I’m more scared that it will take a long time to sort out, because this is the last thing I need to do before testosterone, so as soon as it’s sorted, I get my hormones. So I’m just anxious and impatient. So much is going on in my head, I’m 16 and the idea of kids is not important in my head right now. So I’m just wanting this all to be over as quick as possible.

In my country you have to be sterile and you have to go to a therapy at least for a year if you want transdiagnosis. It sucks really hard because they treat you like a crazy person and you have to do all kinds of weird tests. You have to go trough all the surgeries (expect downstairs) to get the hormones. Also it's illegal here to give birth a child to someone else. You are one lucky fellow.

Probably one of your more profound vids. The FTM trans I know all made the same decision you did (at least the ones who told me). It's not an easy decision, and one of the important things to remember when beginning T. On the flip side, of the half dozen or so MTF trans I know, 2 of them opted to have their sperm frozen and stored. Of course, it's a lot easier for a MTF to save than a FTM. Neither of those 2 ever used their stored sperm though.

Thanks for sharing your opinion on the subject. I admire and respect your personal choice in the matter and at 17 is incredible. Still, I have a feeling you would make a good parent even though you won't have biological kids yet nevertheless you're a wonderful person and that's all that matters.

  • @Jammidodger

Hey! If you're really nervous maybe you could try and find out her general opinion on trans people? Try bringing up a TV character etc. that you've seen and just start a discussion about it. Also think about how you'd like to tell her, what would make you most comfortable? Telling her in person? Giving her a letter (that she could either read with you there, or privately)? Have you come out to anyone else? Telling someone else first who you are confident will be supportive can really help - they could even be with you when you tell others. When you're ready to tell your mum, be open to her asking questions, needing time, and not understanding straight away. I think it's always good to hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst. Hope this can help, all the best! :)

The pressure was kinda.. falsely put onto you, because you can always stop T for a few months, begin getting periods again, go through the 2 week process of freezing eggs, and then start T again. T doesn't do anything negative to fertility, but it's recommended trans men get hysto/oophorectomy within 5 years of starting T b/c of the increased risk of endometrial cancer. Buut I guess for you, personally, it doesn't matter 'cause you're married to a woman anyway. I'm more just saying this for viewers.
