FSD 12.3.4 Crushes New York City Streets. Round 1

FSD 12.3.4 tackles NYC through Brooklyn to Prospect Park and back. One small intervention. Incredible work. My trips will get more and more difficult as we go along.

Unfortunately, it's still unable to handle much simpler things in my area, so it's not as simple as being able to drive everywhere if it can drive in a complicated place. But it's very impressive.

Well, there were arguably around 4 errors, since it made a couple illegal maneuvers from wrong lanes, and ran over a lot of potholes, and potentially clipping another vehicle is a pretty huge mistake... but, yes, it was extremely impressive otherwise. It's so strange how it masters the most complex scenarios and then messes up on something like turning between two cars.

I’ve been using FSD 12.3.3 a couple of weeks now. The car obeys all traffic laws, and usual won’t go through yellow lights, except once when the car was to close to intersection and had no choice but to run it or get us rear ended. One thing I’ve noticed while not using FSD. FSD actually has trained me to be more observant to traffic around me, signal more and drive safer. The car has taught me to become a better driver. So even if FSD never becomes full level 4. FSD as it is, will save lives today. 👍🏻👍🏻

A lot of people reviewing FSD will always say "I would not have done that, I would have gone past the yellow, I would have sped up, I would have exited earlier, etc.," and while fair, they gotta realize that FSD isn't designed for what works for you 100% of the time. It's designed to do what most people are doing. If you want to get from A to B the quickest and trust your driving skills and don't mind going over the speed limit, yes, you're probably going to beat the Tesla FSD at arriving at your location. Just don't know why people bring it up. You're evaluating the software's ability to drive - not what you would do personally.

Lol i do the same drives around Brooklyn and surprised it didn't move to the right lane when it knew there was a left turn coming up. It had a few chances to merge to the right lane to anticipate that left turn and am just surprised it drove straight on a red light (When the green left light was on). I think you should have disengaged and did the voice prompt to let them know. Good content and have subscribed! Keep it up and i'm just always impressed with how 12.3.4 has been handling my Brooklyn commutes.

Great video and narrative. Awesome FSD performance on the chill mode. To me, living in a European capital city, traffic is much more familiar. Many people noticed that this version does not like to go through yellow light, so I think it will be addressed soon. Also not following lane directions and borders seem to be common, and it looks like AI does not have an idea about breaking the traffic rules and getting tickets. No idea how to train it, but I guess at some point Tesla will need to. Can't wait for more from NY areas.

@@Daneelro Well, it is more like a reward vs punishment system. Reward points are for smooth ride, short time, avoiding bumps, and anything that shakes the car too much, etc. Punishment points are for not obeying traffic rules, speeding, collisions, making other drivers or pedestrians uneasy, etc. That is one of many approaches, no idea what Tesla does. But in general, AI trains towards some metrics and goals. Chance of getting a ticket can be one of the metrics.

Highlights: 5:40: Slow and illegal straight through intersection, after getting stuck in turn lane. 9:15: Runs over series of potholes. 10:50: Waits for truck blocking intersection, then makes a right turn from wrong lane, followed by confusion on lane selection. 16:35: Roundabout #1 handled well, despite human-controlled SUV cutting into lane, then cutting back through 2 more lanes... 17:55: Weird intersection handled very well, despite missing lane lines. 21:07: Natural selection showing enormously generous restraint with this pedestrian. 21:20: Aggressive PL on Yellow/Red light. 21:45: Aggressive UPL, through narrow gap created by curteous drivers, at very backed-up intersection; DE on sketchy turn that was too close to vehicle. 24:35: Intervention of acceleration at UPL. 26:50: Forced to stop mid-turn. Well handled. 28:00: Intervention to increase speed. 29:35: Changes route (to avoid traffic?), then abandons UPL (due to another route change?), then makes aggressive pass around stopped traffic at intersection. 30:45: Navigates super messed-up lane markings. 31:25: Aggressive UPL. 32:05: Passes FedEx truck parked in road, then same with van. 33:40: Navigates weird intersection. 35:35: Not bothered by pedestrian entering crosswalk in path, nor by pedestrian walking parallel to lane edge after, nor by construction-blocked lane, nor by pedestrian in lane. Wow. 36:45: It's been making these moves on CHILL!? 😳 38:05: Proceeds through intersection before pedestrian has finished clearing crosswalk. 39:05: No hesitation passing parked truck in rather narrow area. 40:00: Proceeds through intersection before crossing pedestrian has fully exited road, then no hesitation passing pedestrian in road. 40:20: Not bothered by car backing into on-street parking. 40:35: No hesitation passing parking van. 41:10: Completes left turn through intersection, while light is red, after interrupted by pedestrian. 41:40: No hesitation in pretty narrow road. Wow, very impressive drive. Unfortunate that it was robbed of being robotaxi-level by the significant issue of potentially crashing into a car... but, otherwise 🙃 So many complex scenarios handled with perfection. Kinda frustrating to see it still failing at what should be the easiest tasks - e.g. planning a turning arc that does not intersect with another car ;p Thanks for doing these. Fascinating to see it in this lively environment! 💙

A good human driver goes about one million miles, more than a lifetime of driving, without causing a serious accident. Superhuman driving would be something like being able to drive over ten million miles without a problem. A few miles in Brooklyn with a few disengagements and likely some accelerator help isn't quite superhuman.

@@davidborg2342 sure, FSD progress shows it is on the right path. Taking the first steps of a marathon is on the right path too. That doesn't mean it's almost there. Any robotaxi driver will need to make tens of thousands of safe trips in a row, just to be in the game and get a first driverless license in a city.

That’s unfortunate- very few FSD 12.3.4 videos of downtown NYC - he can definitely speak without it so maybe he picks this up for next time
