FROSTED AQUARIUM BACKGROUND - attaching foggy or mist film easy and without bubbles

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

👇 Click 'SHOW MORE' for full video description and links.
In this video tutorial, I show you how to perfectly attach a frosted (foggy, mist) type film to the back of your aquarium.
First of all, I talk about why I use a foggy type background:
- hide wall and cables
- translucent
- more depth
- backlit
- blocks daylight
- glass protection
I show you 4 different types of foggy film and explain the differences between them.
Next, I show you the tools I'm using to attach the foggy film:
- water spray bottle with little soap or glass cleaner
- razor blade
- credit card
- scissors
- towel
Finally, I attach a foggy film to the back of my #60x50x40 aquarium:
- cut the film to approximate size
- clean the glass
- spray the glass and film
- align the film on the top rim
- wipe out the bubbles
- cut at 45° angle to the exact size
- check the corner
And last I answer some of your questions regarding backgrounds:
- black vs white background
- when not to use foggy film
ps: white background with black silikone example is a scape by Lukasz Krzywosz.

Thanks for the great Tip at the end with Black Background. I was going to try foggy background on my new 240l Tank but was not sure if this will look the way I was hoping for especially since the Aquarium has black Silikon and also a dark (anthrazit) cover, your explanation makes total sense and I´ll stick with black background again!

Hi, Jurijs. One of the best things about the videos you and George do is that you don’t have a “my way is the only right way” approach. Thanks for that! My tank has black silicone, so I have a black background and a wall of susswassertang covering it. I did watch your entire video, though. It was clear, informative, and entertaining as usual. I think your video has inspired me to cover one of my house windows with this frosty film to block out an ugly shed in my neighbor’s garden. :)

Very helpful video! The one time I tried to apply a foggy film it was a total disaster. The film had adhesive on it, and I didn't spray the glass enough. The adhesive stuck on contact and I couldn't press out the bubbles. Then when I tried to remove the film, it left a residue that took days to scrub off! This video might give me enough confidence to try again haha.

I'm a qualified house painter/decorator and have hung a lot of expensive paper. I would just say that when you use the credit card to take the air out, then always start in the centre and work your way out. And if you had let the film dry first it would have been much simpler to trim the edge without disturbing the positioning. There are also cheap little plastic decorators spatulas that would be more effective than a credit card if you are doing this regularly. Thanks for the video. Very helpful in deciding what I am going to do with my first ever aquarium.

@@JurijsJutjajevs one small note I forget to mention - if you leave excess too long it may detach by gravity. I tested that 0.5-1cm (1/4-1/2inch) works best. Advantage is that firmly stickied background won't slip under knife so cut can be strigth as your glass w/o playing too much with proper cut angle etc.

Very nicely described Juris...Just to add one more important point...In dark background tanks, the fish tends to adapt vibrant and distinguished colors as compared to the light or no background tanks. So Fish colors are very crisp and well defined in dark backgrounds. Its a little kind of an edge one will get in black or any dark color background.

@@JurijsJutjajevs I agree. For a new tank installation your method is best. For background installation on an existing tank without a lot of room behind it the method I mentioned works well. You can have very little space to work with and slide the film into place. The fact that it’s repositionable helps. The hardest part is locating the white frosted mylar film, some architectural drafting supply stores carry it. It's available in rolls too so that you can cut it to size as needed.

plane white are like black - they show exactly where the end of the aquarium is and they also show every little dirt on the back glass.

Jurijs Jutjajevs in next day or two I will being do this. I’m going to tape up the aquarium so no overspray gets into it. Going to use rust-oleum frosted glass. I’ll probably have to do a few coats to get the look I want.

Can’t you buy frosted background for like showers and such for far cheaper than the ADA brand? A lot of the ADA brand stuff is insanely overpriced. I just got the same glass intake and outflow pipes from another site for 1/3 of them cost

there is huge quality difference between high grade frosted background (doesn't have to be ADA) and the cheap one for ie "bathroom". You can try the cheaper ones and see if you like it
