Water Demonstrations part two--Hero's Fountain // Homemade Science with Bruce Yeany

Hero's fountain is a device that lifts water to a higher height that it's origin in order to move to a lower position. This simple device was invented almost 2000 years ago and has several variations in making it but they all operate using the same concept. These devices will only run as long as there is water in the upper bottle. When the upper bottle drains out, it will stop flowing, usually drains in 2-4 minutes. The length of time is dependent on the diameter of the nozzle, a very small thin stream may last uptimes about 10 minutes.

Your videos are always so interesting. They really inspire me to make these kinds of contraptions and experiment. As a way to pay this back, here's a little trick that you don't know about. When you have to empty a bottle full of water/liquid quickly, give it a nice swirl just before pouring. This way you create a vortex or whirlpool inside the bottle that lets air rush in at the same time that water comes out. Hope you at least find that interesting!

Still, yes.,The setup of a liquid cooled pc is feasible a and even commonplace for artists or people interested in higher computer power. Cool trick is having a fish tank of mineral oil sealed airtight in a fish tank to give the illusion a sunken computer tower.

It is continuous in the sense it continuously flows without any external forces. So this could not run indefinitely because the water will reach equilibrium and it will stop. I heard claims of this running forever

Scale this up 100 times put genetator in front of flowing water and you can run half kv generator and produce electricity without burining fossil fuel

Nice, and realy if a small setup works all know it will do so in a large setup. But what is happening if one botlle is empty, or, the other is full. Is this the end of the flow?

I was thinking it might be fun to tack on a Lord Kevin water dropper to the one with the fine stream of water and then maybe use the electrostatic forces to drive yet more effects.

I think with the judicious application of valves, you could make one where you just exchange the position of the two bottles when the top one empties, close and open a couple of valves, and keep fountaining.

Only trouble is i don't think they run forever, the water gets lower in one part and then it stops. I'm fairly certain it isn't possible for it to go forever, sorry.🙂

Same here Joseph, I've been thinking of ways around prolonging the time. Like using larger buckets for 'B' and 'C' and having the rain gutters drop into 'A'. Maybe even connecting an air pump to 'B' for when it fills up. Did you ever get anything going for your birds?

  • @digitallion3861

@@greggory1532 I haven't had the time to do anything yet. I've had ALOT of projects going on lately such as a weather head and new meter base/breaker panel and new wiring for the house. New plumbing for the hotwater heater and recently we lost our vehicle and are now stranded with no transportation. I like the rain gutter idea, in fact I already have a system set up to catch rainwater from my gutter that I use for watering the garden. Larger vessels for parts B and C I think would prolong the time also, I'm thinking 50 gallon drums should do it. lol

So does the rate of flow and pressure reflect the amount of water in the system and how far the two bottles are spaced apart? Like amount of water ~gpm and spacial difference between bottles~pressure. I might be confusing myself because i think gpm and psi are directly related and the gravitational difference between the bottles will remain the same because the gravitational pull will not differ more than slightly based on barametrics and sea level...

Flow of you fountain is much stronger than others, i hope this is due to greater height between bottles or due to bigger opening of pipe, i was thinking to make it for getting energy for lights/bulbs.

Once primed will this carry on working until the water has evaporated ?. Or if enclosed so water can not escape will it run forever ? . It looks to me like like an elaborate version of putting a big bucket of water on a see saw .The other end of the see saw is down but its attached to a big syringe of water .The weight of the water in the bucket pushed the syringe in and the water goes up in the air but stops when the see saw with the bucket on reaches the ground.
