This week we're looking at 29 nano aquascapes that were entered into the Aquatic Experience's Aquascaping Live competition. Each tank had to be set up in a day live at the convention. The aquariums were judged by a panel and first through sixth were awarded to the lucky winners.

I liked your tank. It had a lot of movement, starting at the bottom right and zig zagging up to the top. That said I think it could have used a few punches of color. While I get what you were doing with a solid duo-tone, rewarding the viewer with some surprises at each direction change would have been a pleasure. I would add some splashes in the lower right, middle left, and finally a little something at the top right. Like little rest areas for the eyes.

The better scapes all make the tank look bigger than it is through depth perception, and understanding rule of thirds, leading viewer focus, and light and shadows. Can see the difference in experience level of the participants. Great video! Good reference for my next nanoscape!

I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I was watching this with my buddy and without knowing you were even part of the competition I'd commented on your setup mainly because as I was telling him, "Man I love how this looks natural and the the color of the rock and substrate was carefully chosen as it looks as if the rocks were slowly worn away over the years and formed the matching substrate!" Nice work. Very impressive. Subbed!

Omg! I really loved your tank! I was looking for some inspiration because I just bought a nano tank, and I actually stopped the video to go back and play yours again (I didn't know it was yours yet) It really caught my eye! I enjoyed it very much, and I was mesmerized by how simple yet beautiful it was, I appreciated that it stood out from the rest. It's such a disappointment it didn't make it to the top rankings, but I felt really inspired by it! You have a new sub!

16 was my favorite but I remarked aloud to my wife when the first place entry came up. That is a truly unique layout! I’ve never seen hardscape up against the front glass, leaving an opening to view the layout behind the portal that opens up and creates incredible depth of field.

For some reason i was immediately attached to #1, im not even in the hobby but that idea of the driftwood in the front, I was hooked. You didnt look at it like a picture, it pulled you in and immersed you in this underwater jungle of minimalism, with that wood in the front it gave a three dimensional experience that surpassed all others. IMHO i greatly respect the judge.

I picked 4 tanks that I thought were amazing. Three of them were 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and my fourth one came in 5th place. I chose these because they all gave the illusion of depth, in such a small tank. The 1st place tank also gave the illusion of height. I am planning to re-scape my similar sized nano tank, and I will surely get inspiration from this group of 29.

If you notice in the top 6 the left and right sides of the tanks are busy and a gap in the middle to see through with a change with the angle of vision. 1 2 3 5 have roughly the same idea. With the change of angle of point of view, you see the difference in depth. That is what i see and like. It is very hard to create, and turns out more interesting and beautiful. There were only like 2 in the whole set i was thinking WTH were they thinking. The rest were very nice. 1235 were the best in my pov. I wish i could do something that nice with my tanks to get the depth perception. Very impressive on the whole. Thanks for the video.

The key with the winning tanks was that the hardscape went all the way to the front of the glass. The winning tanks had rock and wood within an inch of the front panel. That really allows you to play with depth, but it does cut into the livable habitat for fish.

Your tank was amazing. I liked how the sand color ( which is different than almost any scape I’ve ever seen) blended so nicely with the rock. Your tank should have placed.

My plants were ragged. I don’t think with their condition my Hardscape could have saved me! But thank you!
