Front tyre slip on a wet day: BEWARE THE TARMAC OVERBANDING!

A brief loss of traction on shiny tarmac overbanding on a wet day. This road had relatively recently been repaired in patches. The front tyre lost grip as I moved from position 1 to 3 across the shiny overbanding, then re-gripped the tarmac.
I've been warning students for years that this can be slippery, but never actually experienced it myself. Lesson learned!

See you soon,
Leanna

This is why I’m such a fan of the RAPID school of teaching, where they teach to sacrifice vision (and therefore speed) in winter/wet riding, prioritising areas with visually more grip. Nice save though remaining calm, and a good reminder!

Hello, thanks for this. As far as I'm aware all trains of advanced thought teach this principle, which is the hierarchy of "SSV" or "safety, stability, view" from Motorcycle Roadcraft, in that order of prioritisation. I didn't expect the narrow tarmac overbanding to cause such a slip at such a slight lean angle, but every day we learn 😊

Back in the old days over-banding was to be avoided in the wet unless crossing was essential. These days, modern tyres are so much better we get blasé about it, but as your clip shows, still to be treated with caution in the wet. Good reminder.

I had this on a freshly patched road (the usually fabulous biking road the B827 in Perthshire) in the dry last summer. Wasn't sure if it was my front or rear that went but it ruined the rest of my day as I initially thought it was something wrong with my tyres. I avoided the road for the rest of the season.

It's strange how it can put the wind up us enough to knock our confidence in both tyres and ourselves. The main thing is we acknowledge the combination of human error (essentially this was avoidable) and poor circumstances. Was it a particularly hot summer day? I've known new tarmac to be be slippery on hot days. Thanks for your comment 😊

Yes, we have a road similar to that, though it's quarry slurry rather than mud. Very slippery stuff. Best advice? Do your best not to get into the situation in the first place through better planning. I didn't feel as though I had any control once it went. It was just luck that it regained grip enough to keep it upright 😬

I think they're a much bigger problem over there as I believe they use them as a quick "plug the gap" fix for cracks. I guess they also get much greater temperature variations which causes more extensive cracking.

  • @motorcyclelessonsuk

Well, actually the road repair itself was a good one. The thick tar banding wasn't so helpful but I can see why they did it. As to saving the front end, I don't think there was anything but luck in it. I had no control once it went as far as I can tell. If it had been any worse I suspect I would have been off. The only thing I can suggest is not to get into that situation in the first place through better planning. Lesson learned!

That's a good comparison, I hadn't really thought of that, we also have them here in Nottingham. We tend to encourage students to cross them smoothly at an upright angle so as to keep one tyre on the tarmac while the other crosses the line. Not much fun to slip on any surface really. The ferries used to be my worry on the IOM trips, all that wet metal flooring 😬

  • @FlohwAMotohw

Hi Leanna! Longtime without posting here and not enough time to watch everything properly unfortunately. I experienced it a lot of times! Here in France this kind of "decoration" are frequent, we call them "serpentine". It always has slipped for me, winter when it's wet or very cold, summer when tarmac is very hot it melt a bit and the other days just because the tier wants to rest or something. Front and rear (not at the same time or I didn't notices it) It's always surprising but I am not sure it's possible to be sent down because of that as the tire would grip again some centimeters after and because of the speed the front wheel will line up quickly. (I suppose the front brake is not grabbed because of reptilian brain and there is enough margin between the band and the outside of the road to be able to understand what happened) What do you think?

  • @motorcyclelessonsuk

    @motorcyclelessonsuk

    5 ай бұрын

Hello, good to hear from you again! I suspect if I was unlucky enough for the slip of the tyre to be slightly longer there would be an increased chance of coming off. This was certainly scary enough for me to be more careful in planning position changes in future, because once you're in that wobble it certainly doesn't feel like you have any control over whether it stays upright or not 🙄

Ah, now for the 32 Trillion dollar question - WHAT / HOW did (or didn't) you do to handle / recover that? Forcefully steer in a direction (which direction), or relax grip? Reason I ask: I was (almost) set to go and get my learners permit in Australia, and splurge on my first ever bike (Honda XR150L), but watched a video which gave me cause to pause. A skilled / experienced rider wearing more body armour than a SWAT team, travelling around 20 km/h, slipped on some wet green slime crossing a concrete spillway, and broke her leg. It happened in the blink of an eye (recorded like your helpful vids). That it could happen to such a skilled and heavily protected rider SCARED ME. (I've never ridden a bike, but have 35 yrs driving (military trained) experience, over 700,000 km's, never (ever!) skidded a car or truck on a sealed road. Over 13+ (minor) traffic collisions - zero "at fault". Should I stick to 4 (or more) wheels?).

  • @motorcyclelessonsuk

I didn't do anything to correct it. The tyre slipped on the slippery surface, then regripped. It was over in probably less than a second. The key point here is that this could have been avoided, had I decided not to change position at that exact moment. Riding a motorcycle carries risk, but there are many things we can do to avoid situations like this, so long as we continue to learn from our mistakes and are committed to being the best we can be through training to the highest standards and thereafter through focused and well planned riding. I can't advise whether you should ride a motorcycle or not, that's up to you! Thanks for your comment 😊

I doubt it. They've got to join the tarmac together somehow or we would have big pot holes to contend with 🤷‍♀️. I wouldn't put all the blame on the surface. Less grippy surface is to be expected here and there and we need to plan for it. This was a good reminder to me to be more careful and detailed with my planning 😊

Hi, here in Norfolk, Norfolk County Council banned overbanding for just that reason many years ago, and I believe it is still the case due to a Norfolk County Counciler family member coming off their motorcycle on this overbanding, all we use in Norfolk is edge sealent no over banding, but will say most overbanding does or should have anti slip but again it's down to the workforce and how it's applied. But I'm glad you survived as I do enjoy your videos. It helped me pass my DAS last June only 44 years too late, but I love riding my Tracer gt+ around the Norfolk Coast.
