There are a few cases when you do need to worry about this... If you really are going to place bookshelf speakers on a bookshelf, then you don't want rear ports. Or if you're placing floorstanders in front of heavy sound absorbers or curtains, they will suck up the port output rather than reinforce it like a wall would. A rear port is more vulnerable to what's going on behind the speaker, and you need to pay attention to that.

I agree on where they should be placed but many don't have an option. In the past mine were almost hidden behind the TV but when the family was out of the house the speaker stands came out of the garage and the speakers were 3 feet into the room. For many people where the ports are do matter.

Ports are a source of distortion. If you can add a resonance to the speaker to extend the apparent frequency response or to coincide with say, kick drum frequencies that makes for a more exciting listen that compromise may sell more speakers. You can also hear cabinet resonances coming out of the port and adding a colouration. Sometimes there is turbulence as the air pressure changes as it passes from the port into the room and back. A port done well is seamless and means you can get the so called quart out of a pint pot. The sound is bigger and delivers more volume and bandwidth. The port damps the driver by acting resistively outside its resonance frequencies. Pointing it backwards makes the speaker sound more airy and makes the imaging more vivid. It becomes harder to hear the mechanical colourations. Front porting can feel a bit like the speaker has another drive unit up front. The best ones have low port velocity and don’t tend to produce gusts of air and turbulence. Small ports have high velocity air exiting at almost all frequencies. The answer to turbulence and incoherent contributions from the port include bundles of straws or reticulated foam bungs. They narrow the resonance peak and keep some of the colourations in. The transparency of the speaker is mostly predicated on build quality and, the contribution of the port must give the appearance of extension without the problems of using a resonator in an obvious way. The right sized port might need to be out back both for sound quality or lack of available surface area. If the speaker sounds right, it is right - however, the compromises will need to reconcile well to maintain the illusion of accurate playback.

Moving a speaker closer to a solid surface (wall) will always enhance (exaggerate?) the bass. Two walls?? Yup, more bass. Three walls?? (ie; back and side wall with floor or ceiling), sometimes waaaaay too much bass. Hate to bring this up but, room shape and size has maybe more to do with perceived sound.

If after carefully locating them (following the instructions that come with the speakers and I suppose written by the designers), and, as me with the Q300, continue hearing an unnatural enhancement in the low mids, don't doubt it: close the ports with the foams. You'll hear the difference for the better. I guess the Audiophiliac will agree with me: I'm letting the designers design, and I'm using a tool the designers have provided in case their design, under some circumstances, needs a little help to obtain the best from the design. No?

My 2 cents comparing the B&W 705 S2s (rear ported) vs. the B&W 805 D4s (front ported). I compared them in the same location switching between the speakers multiple times while playing the same song. Here are my observations: The rear ported 705 S2s produce more room filling sound and may I say stronger bass than the 805 D4s, but the front-back sound stage (particularly vocals) become muddier and I was not sure where the singer was placed; the vocals appear to be coming from behind the line of the speakers and also above the speakers; the right-left soundstage is perfect - no effect of the rear ports on this. The 805 D4s on the other had appear to produce somewhat weaker bass (on drums - particularly the bass/kick drum), but the front-back soundstage (particularly vocals) is very clearly defined and right in front of you as if the singer is standing right in line with the speakers. The right-left sound stage is same as the 705 S2s - in the middle and perfect. I guess it is a choice between perfect soundstage and a slightly weaker bass performance. Not sure which way I am going to go yet.

Should be measured from rear of speaker, ie gap distance. But do try moving forward and back from this measurement to get resonance correct, otherwise you may end up with a reflecting sound wave off back wall reducing or even cancelling effect of forward sound waves! If you have a smart phone you can download an App to measure frequency response. Go online and download an audio test frequency sweep or hifi bass test signal file, burn to CD, then playback while monitoring on fone App. When signal responce is looking smooth and level from 250hz and below to your bass cutoff (cut off typically 60-20hz), ie no drop outs in between, then you got it right 😎👍

  • @ksb916

The location of the port does make a difference, although small, there is a difference. The port produces the lowest frequency a speaker is capable of playing. Depending on the depth of the speaker and proximity to the wall behind it, this can make a difference in the sound. I have a Klipsch rp440 center channel, it is about 14 inches deep, that means placing a port in the rear will mean the lower notes are generated closer to the back wall.

  • @Justwantahover
    @Justwantahover5 жыл бұрын

The back, cos from the front you get the med from the back of the driver coming out of the vent. With the vent at the back you don't hear that so much.

An observation...Andrew Jones stated that one reason he adopted the front port is that many people actually place speakers on shelves for a variety of reasons, maybe because they have bookshelves in their listening room and it’s the only practical place. Such is my case. You know, gong way back to my AR 4x’s, Dynaco A25’s etc., these speakers have for the most part have always been labeled “bookshelf” speakers. I currently have NHT classics threes, which are acoustic suspension design.

my friend the port location makes a big difference... if the port is in the back there is less cancellation, if the port is on the side it is 90 degrees out of phase which can help with out of phase cancellation, front port has the worst cancellation if not done and tested properly, but front port couples with the speaker wave giving you a small increase in output at tuning frequency... side firing also slightly increase the output as it couples with the main driver waves.... but go outside your house and you will find out that rear firing is the best as it will reflect the bass from the wall.

Front port or rear port affects layering in soundstage. If the port is in front , left to right imaging is great but depth suffers. For rear ported speakers, apart from the imaging left to right, the depth is better. For placement of front-ported speakers getting close to the wall actually makes them sound better. Monitor Audio bookshelf speakers are a case in point. You may agree or disagree but that's my experience.

But what are ports for, though?... Is it to release any buildup of tension inside the cabinet or is it to "tune" the sound? If not both of course... I mean, kind of like front and down facing/firing subwoofers, there must be something of a difference. AND, it probably has to do with the environment. As an example, you might have heard of the Bose 301 speakers. They designed it to rely on reflections from hard surfaces and for that they added two "tweeters", one facing forward and one back, and they're sticking out on an angled baffle, on the "corner" of the cabinet. - The interesting part is, they've also put the port right behind those, also at an angle. And I'm quite convinced that any frequencies coming out there are also directed at any room-surfaces and add to the sound-strength. - Another interesting thing is that on later models they moved the port somewhere else anyway... So who knows...

BTW, they are mainly front ported, because there are no turbulence in their tunnels (they sucks all unwelcome things), like in plastic (or no matter what) tubes in bass reflex ported speakers... there might be no turbulence if the tubes of the bass reflex ports are made from better materials with some texture and fixed in more places... like some manufacturers do... so... inter alia... ''down firing ports are the bests''.

It makes sence because the wave length is probably longer than 3m so the disposition of the port to the woofer is probably fairly small relative to the wave itself. Bass is not that directional either so I agree there is not much of the theoretical difference as your wavelength is in magnitudes larger than the difference in position.

For everyone who thinks they know how ports work, please read this. ( audiojudgement.com/bass-reflex-speaker-design/ ) I have Vance Dickason's book, albeit an earlier version, along with numerous other design books, etc. and have known how ports work for many years and I cringe every time I hear or see "the port is out of phase" line. IF the the port was always out of phase, it would do nothing but cancel when front mounted and only add when rear mounted. Side mounted (that includes top and bottom) would theoretically do nothing since the phase would be 1/2 add and 1/2 subtract. As for rear firing ports, it is the combined effect of the sound (sound wave, not the mass of moving air) reflecting off the wall and recombining with the front waves of sound from the front baffle of the speaker. That little thing called phase shift due to time. That is why distance from the wall makes so much difference in how good the speaker sounds. There's a lot more to it than these few sentences. Please, pick up a design book and read it rather than rely on someone that sounds plausible on the internet. You'll enjoy your audio so much more when you get to understand it.

Kind of true, however... With a rear port, there's a potential to reinforce the bass by strategic positioning. Distance with a rear port to a wall, isn't all bad news, whereas close the distance with a front port and all you will achieve is bass boom.

The point of this vlog was just that the designers don't favor front or rear ports, they go back and forth as they see fit. Andrew Jones for Elac for example, moved the port from the rear of the original Debut B6 to the front of the new B6.2, and B&W designers moved the port from the front of the 685 S2 to the rear of the new 606. So apparently the designers in both cited examples saw no advantage to front or rear port placement. They use whatever works for each design. Putting most speakers up against or near a wall won't be an ideal situation. Front or rear port placement isn't that big a deal. If it was designers would never use rear ports.

I swear there's a video interview of Andrew Jones - might have been his last home theater geeks episode with Scott Wilkenson where he specifically mentioned with the Debut 2 he made a design decision with moving the port to the front due to questions Elac was receiving from their customers about how close they could put the original Debut to the wall. So to alleviate the feedback and concern assuming this is their most popular mass market line and audiophiles won't be putting speakers near walls he moved the port for the Debut while not doing so on Adante or Uni-fi the more high end speakers.

Front and back ports are not just about aesthetics! Imagine that speaker pushing back air into the box.. now imagine that air is going QUICKLY straight out the back port or it has to bounce a wall and then get out from the front port, which one is faster than the other? Obvious answer - back port has faster air flow than front port. Now, because air in this situation is not only air but is frequencies/sound coming out, the more time it takes to get out the more frequncies it holds there in this speaker chamber. This, without specifying which one and how exactly, is giving us differences in sound!

@SMOG port chuffing is a crime against audio. I've never understood why designers would sign off a chuffing speaker. Fortunately my speakers have 3.5" wide ports with aerofoil centers and are not audible to me 😄. I've had speakers that chuff in the past. I always block the ports and just accept whatever bass and mid loss it entails.

With any box speaker, near wall placement is a no-no because the sound reflecting off the wall mucks up the imaging. The further the speaker is from the wall the higher the ratio of direct (from the speaker) vs. reflected sound from the wall. Same is true for most instruments, an acoustic guitar played very close to a wall would sound awful.

Port location doesn't matter at all. Wavelength at, say, 30Hz is 330(m/s) / 30 (Hz) = 11metres. So the path length difference due to location difference being less than 1 metre is negligible. Not to forget that radiation pattern at that frequency is spherical.

Does nobody understand anything about acoustics? Most people don't have the proper room to fully enjoy rear ported speakers. So many manufacturers and engineers make their speakers front ported. To make it easier for the listener to achieve better sound with the room that they have. I like near field listening. Therefore I prefer a softer tweeter and a front port. I understand port turbulence. Thats why I recommend speakers with a passive radiator. If you can find them.
