When buying speakers, some come with sponges that you fit in the rear bass port of your speaker. Should you do this, why you would want to, when you should and shouldn't?

I genuinely don't understand this video, you say don't use the bungs but they are included to correct problems with your speaker placement, which in some cases means you end up having a speaker with really 'boomy' bass and that eats up the mids, in those circumstances they are very much needed because the manufacturer didn't intend for your speaker to be used in a tiny room sat right up against the a back wall for example, end of the day let your ears be the judge but dismiss the bungs of your room is a bass trap, it can really ruin music.

I live in a tropical country and as such use these to keep out unwanted bugs etc from making inside of the speaker their playground. When in use however I am able to pull them out. They came with my Q Acoustic 3030is.

So uhh..... the company that gave you the plugs have no idea what they are doing then? 😐

Some speakers, in some rooms, they have some echo effect. And you must use that foam. I use it! because I have a separate amplified sub and I don't need bass.

Sorry, but there is a lot of nonsense in your explanation... First of all...Bass Reflex Ports are quick and dirty tricks that Speaker manufacturers use to artificially boost the available SPL at low frequencies. They are not an ideal solution, and can make your bass sound boomy. Also, Speakers are usually designed and tested in a special anechoic chamber. That's where the frequency response is usually measured and tuned to be flat. If you room is a regular living room, then you won't ever hear the Speaker the way it's meant to sound anyway. Most Speakers, even bookshelf, have their BR ports at the back. This can lead to problems, as you might encounter too much boominess in the bass area due to room gain and reflections, when the Speaker is close to the wall or in a closed off shelf. Of course, blocking the port isn't always a good idea, it can however make a lot if sense in certain circumstances. Saying you should never use the port plugs is just plain wrong. They can make the Speaker sound better or worse! Try it out! Last but not least...if you do experiment with those foam plugs, try wrapping them in cling film to make sure the plug is completely airtight. That should yield better results than a partially closed off port with just foam, where some air still escapes.

speakers are constructed and not mean to be flat at all. We are not talking about studio monitors. Of course you can partially plug speakers.

Clearly not at the camera. Subjective nonsense. No real explanation other than a very strongly opinionated, confused, stoned man.

I have a home theatre system and after I plugged the subwoofer port with a towel the quality of bass increased dramatically. It became a lot punchier, very responsive and the muddled bass was gone. The overall bass reduced dramatically and I have to set it to max but the difference is day and night. I’ll never go back to open ports with my setup. I’m sorry but your assumptions are not correct..

Nonsense, often manufacturers include the port foam to tune the speaker to your liking, there's no right or wrong answer on whether you should use them it's a matter of what you want out of your speakers.

All i got from this was if your speaker is in the right position you shouldn't use these.... but these are specifically meant for having speakers in a less than ideal location. you didn't answer anything in regards to whether you do have a rear ported speaker that has to sit close to/on the wall,

Come on, get organized, and say something. What's wrong with experimenting in a small room where the speakers have to be close to the wall? You can always take the plugs back out if they don't help.

My speaker sounds better when ports are closed, I don't care what manufacturer had in mind, and they didn't build those speakers in my room and with my preferences
