🌳 Discovering the Wonders of Forest Ecology | Interview with Emeritus Prof. Nimal Gunatilleke 🌿🔬
Embark on an insightful journey into the world of forest ecology as we sit down with Emeritus Professor Nimal Gunatilleke! 🌲🍃 From his early training as a microbial geneticist to becoming a pioneering forest ecologist, he shares the exciting convergence of both fields for aspiring students.
Professor Gunatilleke's scientific journey began with fungal genetics, a teaching tool to unravel the mysteries of genetic structures and control measures. However, destiny led him to the captivating tropical rain forests, where his wife, Savitri, an inspiring tropical forest ecologist, conducted her outdoor laboratories.
Together, they ventured into the mesmerizing world of field ecology, igniting Professor Gunatilleke's transformation from a laboratory scientist to an ecologist driven by the call of nature. As renowned ecologist Prof. Daniel Jansen eloquently expressed, it was time to shed the lab coats and embrace the dynamic and evolving creatures of the rain forests.
Delve deeper into the importance of forests in combating climate change, conserving biodiversity, and fostering sustainable practices. Witness Professor Gunatilleke's four-decade-long research in Sinharaja forest, deciphering natural dynamics and restoring degraded areas, including biologically impoverished Pinus plantations.
Discover how forest ecologists conduct applied research, working hand in hand with ecological principles, paving the way for a new generation of restoration ecologists.
Reflecting on challenges faced during his scientific journey, Professor Gunatilleke emphasizes the significance of logistics in taking students to the field. His wisdom and experiences will inspire and guide young scientists in their pursuit of meaningful careers.
As educators and mentors, he highlights the importance of motivation, dedication, and interdisciplinary knowledge for thriving in the age of biology. For high school students contemplating a career in science, Professor Gunatilleke advises considering inherent strengths and recommends exploring both molecular and field biology.
Join us for this captivating interview, where Professor Nimal Gunatilleke unravels the wonders of forest ecology, offering invaluable insights and inspiration for aspiring scientists. 🌿📚 #ForestEcology #ScienceInterview #NatureConservation #InspiringScientists

Natural sciences ගැන තමයි මල්ලි මේ කරන්නේ. Natural sciences wala branches දෙකක් තියෙනවා. Physical sciences and bio sciences. ඒවා ආපහු තව branches ගොඩකට බෙදෙනවා, example: chemistry, physics, mathematics, plant sciences, zoology etc. මේ video එකේ තියෙන්නේ plant sciences ගැන.

Technically once a professor is retired they are no longer called a professor. But for the giants in a field, a university can award the emeritus status. It's a lifelong designation that recognizes achievements of those with meritorious records. So when someone has emeritus/emerita in front of their name, you know that they are pioneers in some field..
