Love seeing your son enjoy it as well

Purchased the Habu 2 days ago. First chance to fly it and it was awesome. I am new to RC planes so I experienced it on Safe but was totally satisfied. Love the plane!

Most Excellent ... looks more like a second level airplane than a pure trainer. Your son did a great job and I think his assessment is right on spot - it could be used as a trainer. Thanks for sharing.

It’s a really good flyer and with some direct flight instruction I think could be used as a trainer. That was the reason I wanted my son to try it out. He was the perfect test case for it. It is a bit higher performance than most trainers, so that does require require a bit more attention.

We never ran a timer on it, but we were flying for quite a while on both 3s and 4s.

Which came first the Habu or the Rebel, I suspect it was the original Habu, I can see this as an edf trainer and probably even easier to fly than the Rebel ( I have a Rebel ) but a plug and play option would be better leaving the pilot the option of radio gear and gyro, or no gyro. The price point might then be more crash friendly !!!!

Nice review. Having Young Geek test fly this bird was a great idea. E-flite advertise this as a “Trainer”, but it’s not a good beginner plane as was demonstrated. No BNF is a mistake, I wouldn’t be surprised if a BNF is available soon & the RTF is dropped. As an intermediate pilot myself, I’m interested in getting one, without a Tx or charger.

If his landing had been with a more traditional prop-driven trainer he would have broken the prop, possibly bent the motor shaft, damaged the motor, mount, firewall, etc. A bent nose gear is much easier and less expensive to repair, and learning to not stall when landing is something nearly every new pilot finds out about the hard way...no matter what trainer model they're learning to fly with. This is where having an instructor really pays off, which is what we recommend for the Habu STS, Apprentice STS and all of our trainer models even if they are equipped with SAFE. For example, as we've posted a few other places now: "Also, although it's equipped with SAFE and you have the RealFlight Trainer Edition simulator to help, there is no substitute for having the support and guidance of an instructor. Yes, you can potentially learn to fly the Habu STS on your own using SAFE, but you are more likely to succeed, to learn to fly faster, and to become a better pilot more quickly, if you have an instructor to help you! So please be sure to look for RC flying clubs and instructors in your area if you haven't already. You can also check out our Horizon Hobby Flight School program here: www.horizonhobby.com/flight-school.html#:~:text=Becoming%20a%20Horizon%20Hobby%20Flight,help%20and%20confidence%2Dbuilding%20support!" And as noted in response to other comments/questions regarding a BNF Basic version: No BNF Basic option for this one due to the added cost associated with the flight controller (which includes a barometer that offers the "invisible floor" functionality, makes upgrading to the LAS and other functions possible) and serial receiver included in the RTF version. Those cost more than an AR636 or AR637T receiver, and would have made the price for a BNF Basic version about $60 more than the PNP version. That said, we do plan on providing an AR636 model file that includes AS3X and SAFE Select tuned for the Habu STS so anyone who has a spare 636 and would like to install it in the PNP version can. We may also offer a Habu STS setup for the AR637T, but the 636 is our priority for now since so many people already have those receivers on hand.

Yeah, it was not a good landing, haha! But, the airplane handled it like a champ which is what you want from a good trainer.

Nice job getting the boy on the sticks I hope he sticks with it and becomes as good of a pilot as his dad. I've been trying to get. My boys out to fly with me but the dang Playstation and Xbox seem to rule their brains. Being that they are online schooling i think i will be adding a flying and building class to the cariculum. YEAHHH that's the plan

Honestly, there are better options to start with than this one IMO. The aero scout is a great trainer to learn on. Also, I highly recommend getting connected with a club who can help provide some flight instruction for you. It will save you time and money while you’re learning.

need your help, enjoyed your video, got one. with SATE and INTERMEDIATE the elevator does not deflect below the level of the horizontal stab. Full range with expect setting. Is that normal? With Hobby Horizon not replying to e-mails I need to ask you. Thanks!

Intermediate mode still angle limits the airplane, so that could be part of it. What happens when you set the rates to high?

You almost pull off a carrier landing as good as mine!!

Question, do you have to fly these at special air fields? Or can i go down to the soccer field when know ones around and fly it?

Generally, you just need a nice wide open space. The slower aircraft can easily handle a soccer field, but with the larger and faster aircraft, it’s better to seek out a more dedicated flying field.

Nice video you could have mentioned the optional sensor to assist in landing that would help with a beginner as a trainer. Also using the flight simulator capability. 👍

Will i be able to fly the 90mm Viper after training with the Habu?

Conceivably if you’re quite proficient with the habu, it wouldn’t be a huge stretch to jump to the viper. That said, there’s more complexity and cost to the viper with the flaps and retracts and it’s a much bigger and heavier model which does make it fly differently. I would say the 70mm viper would be a good intermediary step to the 90mm viper if that’s a possibility.

Newbie question.. but would I need to put in some hours with a simulator before I even attempt a first flight ?

I have a Dynam Meteor II EDF jet. It looks a lot like this Habu. Does anyone know if the wing piece is easily interchangeable?

Ah, ok. It may be worth a try. They did lengthen the fuse on this one and I’m unsure if they increased the wing root chord, so unsure if it’ll fit. You can always add wing area using some foam, etc. with the current wing that’s on the meteor.

It varies depending on how hard you fly the airplane, but we were getting around 4-5 minutes if I remember right.

Chris, True Story. 2 weeks before my 14th birthday my dad asks me what I wanted for my birthday. “Without hesitation I said “A 90cc Yamaha dirt bike.” Dad doesn’t say anything, just walks over, puts his arm around me, starts walking me back to the house and says, “Your mom and I have been looking for the right time to tell you, and this seems to be the right time. Tried to fly yesterday. My one month anniversary with Covid-19. Couldn’t expo out the shakes and loss of equilibrium. This virus sucks, and I had the mild, no fever, no cough version. I hope you and yours avoid this, it sucks.

That is correct, it has fixed gear.

I know that HH wants to sell more products and that the beginner market is a good one to go after. Even after watching Padawan fly it (and he certainly did fine), it still strikes me as way too much airplane for a very first RC airplane. I think it's rather silly for HH to be marketing an EDF as a very first airplane. Maybe this would be a decent second, more intermediate, trainer..

I don’t disagree. It’s one of those that could be used as a trainer if one had to do so on a jet, but is best served with some one on one instruction. Given the performance though, yeah maybe a next step trainer or something like that may be better suited in the long run. All the more reason I wanted my boy to fly it and try it out. He was a perfect test case for it.

Right, and that made sense. Your son had, what, 12 or 15 flights on a beginner prop plane. For a step-up plane, it makes a lot more sense than a very first plane. I enjoyed the way that you did the video with it being flown by both skilled RC pilots and a beginner pilot. Good video, as are all of your videos.

I can’t see recommending this to someone wanting to get into the hobby. It costs twice as much as the AeroScout and is at least twice as likely to get destroyed before they learn to fly. It would be a good first EDF for someone, but since they’ve probably already worn out an AeroScout, they already have a transmitter. So, I don’t see a market for it as an RTF. As a BNF, it won’t sell very well if it’s over $225. Look at all the 70mm EDF’s out there with flaps and retracts for $250. I think HH has missed the mark on this one. Nice video, Chris..

I hear you and don’t disagree. I do think though that with a flight instructor and some traditional flight instruction, it can be used in its intended purpose successfully. But as I mentioned it’s pretty high performance in comparison to others and as a trainer, that AeroScout is really hard to beat. This is for those who absolutely have to have a jet straight out of the gate, you know?

@@Thercgeek To me this hobby is a journey of discovery and part of the fun is going through the stages, enjoying the challenges and looking forward to the next step, For me this takes something away from all that but then perhaps I am just a dinosaur!!! No doubt there is a market for this but its not on my wish list.

I know the comment was years ago but gotta disagree. I flew Helis and EDFs 10 years ago but got away from the hobby. I want to get back into it and this EDF Seems fun enough without breaking the bank. I have a really old Hitec Aurora 9 that I should probably retire, so the RTF option may do just fine for me and can always upgrade it later

@@xJae14x The Habu shouldn’t be among anyone’s first 3 planes, perhaps their first 5. They might be ready for it in their 2nd year. Otherwise, it won’t last long..

Why didn't your son try in the "Safe" or "Intermediate" setting if he's a beginner? It wouldn't be sensitive if it wasn't in advanced mode. Don't get me wrong he did a great job! But you saying it's a move advanced trainer, when you didn't use the beginner or intermediate setting.

Ultimately, he’s better off learning without it, especially with me standing there coaching him. Safe can train bad habits that have to be unlearned when transitioning away from it. He doesn’t fly super often and I did kind of throw him into the deep end on this one a bit which was a bit unfair to him, but I thought he did great with it.

@@HorizonHobbyProducts Yeah, but a DX6e is $50 more, and up to this point many of us getting started with E-Flite planes (absolutely fantastic planes, BTW) already bit the bullet to get one of those or something similar. The battery sweetens the pot a great deal, but it seems to me that applying that value to a DX6e instead would make this more of a gateway plane that it does by the very limited DXS.

@@skeeterhoney Including the DX6e would have made the RTF cost even more (at least $70 more). And the DXS is not as limited as you may think...it's 7 channels and has telemetry capabilities, plus it can be programmed for use with other models. Sure, it's not as capable and flexible as a DX6e, but not everyone wants to spend more for that when they first get started.

I would have to agree. Strange “trainer package”. So many good options out there already. Market research would be interesting to see. I would think a better quality radio and a solid high wing trainer is a hard combination to beat. And when you want an EDF go with the Avanti. Feels like this doesn’t fill any real voids out there.

Michael Perry yeah if your ready to move into a jet you shouldn’t need it to be a trainer and it is only 50$ less the 80mm f18 hornet!!!!! And this jet isn’t even 6s compatible

Not on this one. That’s typical for a trainer type aircraft which is what this is marketed as.
