From the Bench - Horizon Hobby/Spektrum SAFE Select Technology Tutorial

Ғылым және технология

As I mentioned in my E-Flite P-47 Razorback and Cessna 150 reviews, I've been wanting to provide a separate discussion on Horizon Hobbies' SAFE Select technology (bit.ly/HorizHby) that's featured with their bind and fly aircraft. The P-47 and Cessna are both great next step type airplanes for those that may still be learning and so the technology is there to help folks learning to fly and hopefully protect them from getting into trouble. I found that there wasn't a whole lot of documentation about SAFE Select out there, so I thought that it would be worthwhile to talk a little bit about it and give some tips for using it effectively. Thank you for bringing us a great video on the SAFE flight modes. Although I had taken up RC flying over four years ago, it's still nice to watch these videos to keep my mind fresh and awake. I don't fly on a regular basis, so these little refresher videos do great for me, especially after several months of inactivity. I have two main airplanes that I fly, one is a tricycle gear and one is a sport tail dragger, and both have the same, and both have different flight characteristics, and this is where the SAFE modes come in until I can become fully confident that I can fly them in normal flight modes.

    Great advice on using Safe Select ,Chris. I switch it on and off while flying my UMX Timber. I still had a minor crash but after doing a post flight analysis it was caused by flying too low to recover and losing orientation even momentarily . I could have left it in Safe mode for the whole flight and landed without incident, but that’s not learning to fly.

    Great advice Chris. Would recommend newbies dig into a good simulator: they can pay for themselves after just one or two actual crashes. I tell my grandkids, every time they press "reset", they just spent $300 minimum to replace a real model... i.e. the simulator is not a video game. I also dial in random gusts and crosswinds to practice for the unexpected, Thumbs up!

    Great video. Subbed! I bought a new Horizon Hobby T-28 because I ... erm... ran over my other one with my truck that I forgot about and left on the ground as I was loading my other plane. That one was bought from a friend from the club but he took the spektrum receiver and replaced it with an orangerx that didn't have SAFE. It had a few crashes already which was evident by the epoxy! As of this post Im still learning and my instructor is saying the same thing you said where I should learn good habits and not rely on any auto-fly capabilities. My landings with my Kadet are bouncy but my landings with the T-28 are even worse so maybe SAFE will help level that out at least at first until I won't need it.

  • @Thercgeek

    @Thercgeek

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thank you! I would guess that your bounced landings are probably a result of your flare technique. It takes some practice, but once you're able to master when to flare and how much elevator to use to soften the descent it should smooth that out. Most anytime the airplane hits nose first or flat on all three wheels, it'll end up bouncing. Get it to touch mains first, even if it touches down pretty hard, it'll be less likely to bounce. SAFE may help keep the airplane stabilized when practicing on your own, but keep up the practice and keep working with your instructor and you'll get smoothed out in not time! :)

    @@Thercgeek Thanks. Right now my landings are more panic mode to get on the ground quickly so I don't run out of runway (ours is paved). Easy to fix but it was a hard left turn taxi back to me!

    @@birdwing98 Hey there! Nice of you to check back. Yes flying in general (real flying) is much easier! I'm flying an Eagle 2 with OS 40 along with the T-28. Landings are not a fearful event any longer. :) I don't use SAFE in the T-28 either because it freaks me out. I have more control without it. I turned it on a few times and it resulted in unexpected movements. Just as soon leave it switched off. I added it to a switch which made it easy to turn on and off. I gave back RF7.5 simulator to the club friend a few months ago. It helped a little bit but I found it to be a little negative training at least for me. The simulated T-28 flight dynamics modeling isn't good in the sim compared to the real thing. It drops much to easily in the sim compared to real life. The T-28 foamie floats much more.

  • @Thercgeek

    @Thercgeek

    2 жыл бұрын

    I’m working on a review of the new smart 10 channel receivers in which I plan to cover some of that. AS3X is a gyro stabilization system and so adjustment of the gains is the amount of stabilization. More gain=higher rate of stabilization. However, when there’s too much gain, the model will oscillate and can become uncontrollable. Generally speaking, most airplanes don’t need gyros, but they do help smaller airplanes to feel more like a larger airplane in flight.

  • @Thercgeek

    @Thercgeek

    SAFE select will not auto land the airplane for you. It simply stabilizes it and limits the achievable pitch and bank angles keeping it from being able to roll over onto it's back. You still have to control it through the whole landing.

    Great video. So initially when setting this all up, D/R and Expo need to be at 100% (which is default when setting up a new plane anyway), and then once you've bound the plane, you can go in and adjust the D/R and Expo to whatever you like? Is that right? I've never flown with SAFE. I always just use the AS3X with my own preferred D/R and Expo settings.

    Very nice and informative video.I wish to add my experience regarding problem I faced in assigning a switch for SAFE select on my E flite spitfire.I am using DX7 Gen2 Tx. As per the manual,no programming is required for assigning a switch for SAFE.However even after many attempts, I could not assign either a two way or a three way switch. Ultimately after a lot of brain storming I realised that Aux2 channel is assigned to "R" rotary knob on my Tx. I had to assign it to 2 way switch "A" and after making sure that travel throw was 100% in both directions, I was able to assign SAFE to switch "A". I would like to ask a question regarding EFL8550 E elite Corsair 1.2 M.Why SAFE option is not available for this model, is it because of any technical issue? I have written to Horizon Hobby but yet to receive any reply

  • @Thercgeek

    @Thercgeek

    6 жыл бұрын

    What you describe actually makes sense. You can assign SAFE to any switch, but it has to be one that's assign to a channel. Glad you got it sorted out. On the corsair, I think it was actually one of the earlier releases they did, so I'm guessing that's why it's lacking the SAFE feature. That's purely a guess on my part though. I would imagine one could put a SAFE capable receiver into one though if so inclined.

  • @Thercgeek

    With safe on, trimming may be required if the control surfaces aren’t mechanically rigged at center. So, I’d say what you did was correct since when you switch between safe on and off, the surfaces shouldn’t be dramatically changing position. They will if they’re not mechanically centered.

    All my planes have a "SAFE" receiver or some sort of self righting system installed 'cos I can lose orientation in the blink of an eye; literally! I take it out of "SAFE" now and again to do a roll or a loop or just have a mess around but I would say for 80% of the flight I'm in "SAFE" mode, that's the way I like it. I really enjoy the flights now unlike when I was flying with out it before my heart would pound from taking off to landing, I have no intention of flying with out it or even learning to fly without it and would never encourage others to do so, if like me they are happy flying with "SAFE" and don't wish to do a shed load of fancy manoeuvres why put yourself through hell and smash up your models. I'm happy at the level I am and this is where I'll stay. The 636 "SAFE" receivers are much better than the ones in the Apprentice, as well as letting you use all 6 ports they will still allow you to do knife edges, flat spins etc while you are in "SAFE" mode, just let go of the sticks and you're flying straight and level again, great!!! Another nice video from you; as they always are.

    It’s a Spektrum feature that is all handled in the receiver. It has a 3 axis gyro in it that is used for the auto leveling. So, if you have an airplane that you install a safe capable receiver into, that airplane will then have safe available if you set it up.

I'm trying to learn how to fly edf jets and in preparation have been using SAFE with an F27(the small one) which can really go fast.Also, I have some of the handlaunch 64MM jets which with the just stabilzation receivers I feel pretty confortable flying these jets. Now I want to move to takeoff/landing on narrow runway with the 64MM jets with LG. I'm thinking of getting one with SAFE so while flying I can fly without SAFE but also have SAFE on during landing start. Then switch to SAFE off and only use on emergency during landing as needed. I don't have access to an instructor. I'm hoping this will build my jet flying skills quickly. Now the real question...(I know I'll get hate post for this one and probably go to the bad place when I die)...how about putting the Spektrum AR630 receiver with SAFE into the Freewing F14? I have this jet (with the good afterburners) and ultimately this is what I want to fly. Thoughts on if this would work and if this is a good approach to get to the point where I can fly the F14? • @Thercgeek

    @Thercgeek

    Yeah, that should work. Just make sure you install the gyro in the correct orientation, otherwise it'll operate backwards. Also, the gains on the AS3X gyro will be tuned to the T28, and not the corsair, so just be aware of that. IT may be perfectly fine, but you may also notice some instability (wobble) from it if the gains are too high.

    Most likely, but you'll need to visually check that the gyro is moving the servos in the right direction when you move the airplane around. You don't want the gyro acting against you.

    Is there a reason when i switch to intermediate stabilizer mode the plane falls out of the sky?

  • @Thercgeek

    @Thercgeek

    4 жыл бұрын

    Well, intermediate mode gives you more direct control. What exactly do you mean it falls out of the sky? That could be any number of things. When you flip the switch on the ground, do you notice a trim change on the elevator? It shouldn’t change at all, so if it does you’ll need to adjust your elevator trim.

    Got a problem / question. On my DX9 Transmitter I successfully assigned SAFE to switch "A" I want to move the SAFE option to switch "B" . Switch "B" is a 3 option switch where I already have all my Duel Rates and Expo set up. Do I have to change All my settings back to 100 % on that stick to move SAFE over to switch "B" Or can I just change "ONE" of the 3 options back to 100 % on that switch and move it to that location. Hopefully I'm making since. Also will I have to re bind the receiver afterwards. I've already tried with no success. It would be of great help if you could help me out with an answer. THANKS

    I’m not entirely certain. To set the switch, I think everything will need to be set to 100% to ensure that takes. So, you’ll want to setup your rates on a different switch.

    @@Thercgeek Well. I cleared out switch B and set all 3 toggle options back to 100% travel and zero Expo. Original factory settings. Then I re bound the receiver with SAFE OFF. To completely start over. I then re bound the receiver with SAFE ON and tried to activate switch B as the on, off switch. SAFE refused to acknowledge switch B as the new on, off switch and defaulted back to switch A. There's got to be a way to move the SAFE on, off switch to another channel. If you can run across a way to do this PLEASE let me know. I know how to fly and all, but I would like to have the SAFE option because this is a smaller airplane and I can get disorientated when the airplane is far away and I'm doing rolls, loops ect. Maby once SAFE is set to one switch, it can't be moved. If you can find an answer, PLEASE let me know. THANKS.

    Is the switch you’re trying to assign safe to assigned to a channel at all? The switch can be assigned to any channel 5-9 and won’t take safe unless the switch you’re trying to assign has a channel assignment to it also.

  • @Thercgeek

    Safe select can be assigned to any switch that’s been assigned to channels 5 thru 9. So, decide which switch you want it on, assign that switch to a spare channel and then do the safe selection switch assignment procedure.

    Do you have the switch you’re trying to assign to safe assigned to a channel? Which channel is it assigned to? Also, What radio are you using? If you have an nx radio, you can actually setup safe in the forward programming menu.

    well i have been using the SAFE Rx out of the Apprentice in multiple aircraft even those it is NOT designed for....and even tho I do NOT use the SAFE Select it is basically the same set up.....and I have been flying for many years now and decided to use that E-Flite SAFE Rx (EFLR310013) in my aircraft for various reasons.....and there is a dedicated forum to that on RC Groups, called E-Flite SAFE in another Plane thread ....they now also are using the SAFE Select in multiple aircraft as well , NOT just what is sold by Horizon Hobby......www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2135213-Eflite-SAFE-RX-in-another-plane

    Thanks mate I have been waiting for this video. I have two planes with safe. One is my mini Apprentice & on is my UMX Timber. I’m still not that confident nor comfortable flying my Apprentice out of safe (fly in intermediate) this is mainly because it the difference in elevator trim in safe it is trimmed up but when I turn safe off it is trimmed down. (About 10-15mm difference) But I tend to fly my umx Timber our of safe. I do use it still & it has saved my plane a couple of times. I do like the safe technology it has helped me get back into the hobby after a very dismal attempt about 15 years ago. Great video & really like the channel 👍🏻👍🏻🙃

    Thanks for your input and kind words! A 10-15mm difference is pretty notable, so I definitely understand! I'm not sure why there would be a difference except that SAFE does provide those 3 elevator inputs depending on the throttle. If you're checking it on the ground at idle, that could cause that elevator difference. Have you tried it in the air without SAFE yet? If you're at half throttle, is there still an elevator difference?

  • @matk4731

    The RC Geek Gday I have tried it in the air & it just pitches the nose down. The throttle doesn’t seem to make any difference to the elevator pitch. On takeoff in advanced mode even at full throttle it tries to pitch the nose down & wants to lift the rear wheels off 1st.
