I very much appreciate your videos. I couldn't figure out why my safe switch was not working as programmed. Then I discovered in your video the throttle needs to be 25% or more for the programming to take effect. You would think the manual that came with the plane would have mentioned that. I have used other videos you've made. Now I just look for your videos when in doubt. Thanks very much.

All I can say is thank you very much you made it so easy I've been flying for three years I've been trying to program an a10😂 twin 64 mm warthog. I took it to my hobby shop they were unable to do it I was like what. I've been doing some research and finally came to your video I was able to do it you made it so simple thank you

I have a question! Is there any way to reverse the gyros for the Elevators and the Ailerons through forward programming???? The Ar637t that I in my aircraft in the safe mode the Ailerons and Elevators need to be reversed any help would be appreciated

Bought an NX8. Learning alot about setting it up with your vids. Have subscribed since I connect with the way you explain things, well done!! Suggestion for new vid...explaining AS3X and safe mode in DETAIL. Seems to be alot of confusion around this. What exactly is AS3X, how it works and what it does/control, what different safe modes change, control, limit, etc. I know this is way off topic but does not seem to be alot if any info regarding this.

Hello BD. I watched some of your videos and I appreciate very much your your understandable way of explaining. My question is not directly related to this video but I hope you can help me as I think you are an expert: I own a Blade 230S Smart RTF and a Spektrum NX8 on top. I've done the programming of the NX8 acc. to the manual and double-checked it twice. On my first flight and after about one minute in normal mode the tail rotor made the heli spin about 90deg and then throttle was gone and the heli "landed", luckily on gras and only from 1,5m flight altitude. I checked and restarted the heli, but the same situation / problem after about three minutes again. When binding the heli to the RFT-radio DXs everthing was fine, not any issues or problems at all. I had exactly the same situation with my Nano S3 and my 120 S2 in combination with the NX8: Tail rotor spin and "landing" after about one to three minutes of flight time, but no problems at all when using their RTF-radios. So my question is: Can you immagine or name the issue? I´m quite new to this stuff at all and I´m a little bit confused now. Thank you very much in advance. Best regards, Markus.

Hi, this is a quick related reaction to your great video and also the next step of installing Flaperons. this is about Spektrum AR-631 receivers and my Spektrum DX 8 Hi, Your videos are very good. easy to understand and follow. ------Just wanted to add that my experience for setting up Flaperons with a Safe AS3X PILOT 1 ARF STINSON VOYAGER. ONLY the Right Flaperons will Correct, or do it's Safe or AS3X stabilizing function BUT the Ch 6 Left Aileron will not correct or do any AS3X or Safe function. Reason is that only Receiver Ports 2 Ailerons with Y connector, 3Elevator, and 4Rudder are active with SAFE AS3X mode. Port 6 is outside of that. So this means that all stabilizing and limiting corrections will attempt to be corrected by just one Flaperon connected to Port 2 Aileron port. ---- I have read that this is not so much a problem with full span ailerons like my Great Planes Trainer 60. BUT it could be stall waiting to happen if you have shorter Flaperons like on my Stinson although it hasn't stalled yet . I keep my approach stabilized and apply flaps on the downwind, keep speed up in turn to final as well. If I was not aware of this Flaperon Effect a slow turn to base and final could induce a tip stall because of the yaw induced when the Safe aileron is overreaching (down) to do the work of the inactive Aileron (Port 6). Just want to let you know this , but you probably already know. But if you could put this into you appropriate videos with these warnings. None of this is obvious and would have saved me a week of researching and double checking my stuff. Also, another Item: The Great planes Trainer 60 mentioned above was built by me in 1996 covered with Monokote Chrome film and flew with a Futaba Conquest 74mh radio and long antenna strung external to the fuselage. Training edge to vertical stabilizer. Chrome monokote has a metallic component. I get a 12 ohm reading from probe to probe at 3 inches. I therefore exited the 33 mm tip of the Spektrum receiver antenna out the bottom and did a range test. Full power, 300 feet, with the plane both on the ground, and rigged sideways (knife edge flight between two garden chairs with the belly of the plane facing away from me. Full control at this distance which I attribute to exiting the antenna out the bottom. Question: Do you think I need to use a remote receiver ? I hope not because I would have to buy a different receiver other than the AR 631 I just installed. FYI: the fuselage has regular orange monokote below the beltline front to back and Chrome monokote above the beltline. Thanks for the patience reading my input. You have an excellent speaking style, pace, and logical presentation. My sources are: None of this is mentioned in any Spektrum Literature or operating manuals. Re monokot chrome signal blocking, Only an old thread on a RC forum mentioned and included a response from Monokote tech many years ago with a warning about signal reflection and interference with chrome monokote. Also another roadblock puzzle for me, but solved , with the Trainer 60 which has an OS MaxSF.61 glow engine, the receiver battery is plugged into Port 5. When I had it plugged initially into the first port Bind Plug, I could bind and test the plane in the shop. But when I shut it all down and then switched on the tx and the rx it would not operate... it had to be rebound. Took me a while to figure that out. Also not mentioned in the RX manual. Thanks!

@@MrElvispreston once you make a model and bind to a plane,the transmitter remembers the plane. So when you change between models on youre model list you dont have to rebind.

I set up safe on all of my planes some with retracts all with flaps with my NX8 and I and I've never done the switch toggling with the sticks in.

Stick toggle turns Safe on and off for AR636. If you have a newer receiver then you can do everything in forward programming. If you have AR636 thats bound in Safe mode,you do the switch toggle or Safe stays on all the time.

You need to add that Throttle Cut feature need to be OFF , as well as 100% travel on all flight controls. Only my F4 Phantom mentions it . Not all manuals mention it.

Accidentally sent that. When you were activating safe, I could see your radio was in test mode. Is that where I need to be to set that up?

I have the nx10 and the ultimate 3d plane. Second plane first transmitter. I have bound it several times but it stays in safe. I'm having trouble assigning a switch to work. I assigned a switch on my Maule no problem. I am trying to use the template. I will try again and check the rate switches before I bind it and see if that helps. Any ideas would be great. Thanks

Make sure 100% rates.Also assign channel (channel assign menu)to the switch you want as shown in video. Then rebind the plane.Once the esc arms (multiple beeps then stops) then do the toggle 5 times switch toggle method. Some planes i have had to rebind and do the toggle right after the esc arms.

BD, you always have the answer needed - so I'm reaching out to you again. Want to use switch B on my NX8 for Safe and also Safe Select model aircraft. I know Safe needs a 3 position switch but wondering if a 3 position switch can be used for Safe Select? I'm pretty sure it can and wondering if you have any suggestions and tips for me? Thank you

Correct. Safe with 3 modes (Beginner,Intermediate,Advanced) needs 3 position. They work in sequence with each other so you can put all 3 on same switch.

@@BDTennessee thinking I didn't convey what I was asking very well. Needing to know if Safe Select, which only needs a 2 positioned switch, can be use instead on a 3 position switch? This is so there's no confusion when switching planes that have Safe and Safe Select. Believe a 2 position switch will work for Safe but not sure if Intermiediate mode will just be cancelled out or if there needs to be some special settings?

Thanks for the video - I have a Valiant 1.3 with a new fuselage, so had to move the AR636 receiver over. This instruction should be very helpful. However, I'm a little confused... at :35 you say "remove the bind plug" as part of the SAFE bind process. Then at 1:01 you say "power down the plane" then at 1:03 "remove the bind plug". BUt the bind plug has been removed back at :35 into the video? What am I missing? Thanks again

I am very new to rc world and have a Nano S3 heli. Is it possible to setup separate switches and have a 3 position switch for throttle/pitch curve setting, a 3 position switch for dr/expo settings, and a 3 position switch or safe mode? Also change panic recovery from the push button to a 2 position toggle switch. Sorry if this wrong comment area. Maybe make a vid to explain how to do this. Tnx

You could set that up. In the video you can assign the switch from 3 to 2 with the assign method.

Assign a channel ( example: AUX 2 ) for SAFE Select before binding. Insert the bind plug and power up the Rx , then remove the bind plug ( after Rx starts flashing ) before attempting to bind with the Tx ...as doing it this way will give the option to put SAFE Select on a switch.. Leave the bind plug in the Rx during the bind procedure for AS3X only and the SAFE feature will not operate or be switch assignable...... Select a 2 position switch for SAFE ( on / off ) then perform the toggle process immediately after binding. AS3X is always active in either binding process. Correct?...thanks

BD, I just bought a Durafly T-28. I have an updated AR636A. For SAFE, wouldn't orientation of the receiver affect SAFE? Do your control surface wires face forward of the plane or back? As with the AR631, forward programming tells you put on it's nose and level the plane for setup. Seems to me the wrong way will affect the elevator, won't it? As always, keep up the good work. Yes,AR636A are programmed orientation. Installed improperly can cause wrong correction.

@@BDTennessee BD, I understand that but in the Spektrum Programmer it won't let me set orientation. I am not sure if the cables go toward the front or back. I guess I have to try both ways and see what happens. Thanks

BD, Speaking of the NX8 and a Carbon Cub S2. If I understand it correctly there is a difference between Safe Select and Safe. Safe has an intermediate function which means if you want to set it up you would want to do it on a 3 position switch. I used the (Carbon Cub S +) bind n fly template on the Radio, however I think the S + only had Safe Select. Am I going to have to build a plane from scratch on the NX8 or can I tweak the S+ build already installed to setup Safe? Also how do you turn off/disable expo when you are in Safe mode? I do not want to double up on the settings so to speak. Safe mode already has mixes and expo built into the programming. Sorry for the long request and thanks for any help you could provide.

Correct, Safe Select has Beginner which limits your bank angle the most. Intermediate that allows more bank angle and Expert is no limiting. You can change expo in a BNF cause rx is locked.You can unlock it the PC but not all options are available. If your starting out and running Safe i wouldnt get caught up in worrying about that. I would start from scratch instead of modifying a model...

New to RC flying and need safe and AS3X. I recently bought the E-Flite A-10 64MM, but it was version 1. I have set up safe select on switch B, but I thought I'd have 3 positions, Safe Select, AS3X Intermediate mode, and Safe Off, for full control. It seems I only have two options, safe select on, and off? I have an NX8 radio. I have watched your videos and they got me this far, Maybe I only have these two options, and not the 3rd? any thoughts hat could help?

Some older eflite planes with ARA636 receivers had 2 modes. However 2 mode version when safe is on or off still have AS3X mode.

just to be clear on this....I just picked up an older eflight Pulse 15e with the ar636 Rx .....I have a DX8.....so after inserting the bind plug and powering up the Rx, I then remove the plug , before attempting to bind with the Tx ...as doing it this way will give me the option to put SAFE on a switch...if I bind the standard way, ( leaving the bind plug in the Rx during the bind ) only AS3X will operate and the SAFE feature will not work ...then I select a 2 position switch ( SAFE on / off ) and assign it to AUX 2...then perform the toggle process.......correct?......thanks

Connect servo lead to open channel. Go into channel assign and use the switch you want. Also go into throttle cut and assign same switch.

Yes with newer receivers. AR636 is older BNF receiver.

This means it's possible to toggle "Safe mode" on and off? Since last week I have bought an Spektrum NX8, next to my precious JETI DS-24. I bought the NX-8 for Bnf planes, because it is both very cheap and very nice models are also available. With the NX8 I have an E-flite V1200 BNF Basic with Smart and the Extra 300 3D BNF Basic with AS3X & SAFE Select. It confuses me, SMART-AS3X and SAFE. What does all that mean? I never fly with a gyroscope but might like it if the V-1200 has a little bit of stability aid active with landing, as this is quite a heavy and fast plane with very little deflection airleron only about 8mm. The best thing would be if the stability system could be adjusted in strength. I definitely don't need a "rescue" or anything like that, I've been flying for a long time and also 3D, so I don't get scared so easily anymore. Spektrum AS3X is the gyro. Safe mode is auto leveling and bank/pitch limiting. When using AR636 you can turn off the Gyro (AS3X) but you can Safe. Now if its a new mode BNF that has a AR631 or AR637 then you can turn off AS3X (gyro) and Safe mode all together off (No flying aids). I have another video on channel showing that one. Also be careful using the templates in the NX radios currently as there is errors in them and not setup asccording to book as they should...

@@BDTennessee Thanks for warning me and for the information. I will definitely watch the other videos about the NX and programming. As for the gyro, I think it's better to turn the whole thing off. I was able to land the V-900 with a lot of effort. There was also an active assistance system in it, but because I do a lot of stunt flying, the assistance system counteracted in such a violent way, which I reacted against by countersteering. I was really shocked by it, and took the receiver out and put a Jeti receiver in it.And sold the new DX8 again because I didn't like hat at all. Hopefully I didn't make the same mistake I did with the NX-8 ;)

@@EXTRA300s i agree im not much on gyro either. If you have AR636 you can get a data cable and wipe it clean.Then it will work like a normal RX without AS3X and safe.

I have a big problem that I hope you can help me out with. I successfully set up SAFE on my RV-7 with an AR631 receiver and a DX9 transmitter. I made the mistake of assigning SAFE to switch "A" instead of switch "B". I tried moving both control sticks down and inwards while toggling switch "B" with no success. How can I move SAFE over to switch "B" Can you help me with this please. THANKS.

Manually Change: Settings > Channel Assign > Change Channel 5 or channel 7 (whichever is A) to Switch B. Make sure surface controls (Ail,Ele,Rudd) are on 100% rates. Now do the toggle method after you power up the plane. You may need to rebind. Easiest way is forward programming. Gain settings > Change FM mode switch from A to B

Same setup. Access menu differently cause touch screen.

This doesn’t work for me on an nx8 and a turbo timber evolution. I program the correct channel to the H switch, but the process of binding that switch to safe select never works. Any ideas?

You can do this method.However id use Forward Programming since TT Evo has a AR637TA. I have that video on the channel too...

AS3X is Spektrum Gyro to help stabilize the plane. Safe mode is auto leveling and banking is limited.

@@BDTennessee I'm a little confused now. my f-27 was BNF and I thought it was set up to be in as3x mode on startup and flipping the switch turned it off and you had complete control. so you couldn't have a switch set so it was in as3x and flipping the toggle put's it in safe select. What's the difference between SAFE and SAFE select?

@@flydaddie AS3X is a stabilization gyro. SAFE Select has 3 modes (beginner,intermediate and experience) and panic recovery. Beginner is self leveling and limits flight envelope (bank and pitch limits),intermediate allows wider envelope and experience is full capabilities.

AR636 dont have a mode where you can turn off AS3X like the new receivers with Forward Programming. Safe off it AS3X only and in Safe on is both

I have a nx 10 and trying to bind to a ar636a I’ve tried everything an everyone says I’m doing it wrong but nope no matter what I do safe select ends up on my gear channel retracts up safe on retracts down safe off I’m pretty much done with it do the sticks down and in and flip the switch I desire an it try’s to forward program and says failed no matter how I try to bind it . The switch is always on gear channel any advice would be really really really nice at this point

AR636 wont connect with forward programming because that receiver doesnt support FP... So here is recap of settings need to be done using 5 toggle switch method. 1) 100% rates (d/r switches active switch them to have 100% value) 2) Go into channel assign and set the switch you want to use in next step on Channel 7 (ie Channel Assign > Channel 7: Switch C) 3) Next is briefly mentioned in video, do this process right after binding. So rebind and then do 5 toggle switch method.

I have followed your instructions to the letter and it’s like safe is locked in on gear channel . And the sticks in and toggle won’t work it try’s to forward program and fail on a receiver that does not support it n my old dx I had to run flaps an gear on a y with a inline servo reverser on the gear that’s why I bought the new nx and figured I would be able to make it work the way I want it to but no bueno

I finally got it !!!!!!!!!!!’!!!! I’m so excited . I created an new model and the only thing I set up was th cut and assign the switch I wanted to aux 2 before binding and everything worked I was surprised . Because I always go thru an set up everything I need be fore binding like flaps general expo I prefer F modes and all that good ness so I figured I’d try with out setting anything up on the radio . So thank you so much for the tutorial

Trying to program the three modes that come on the DXs transmitter for the Carbon Cub S2 (beginner, intermediate and advanced) on the NX8, I can only activate the beginner mode which ss SAFE. On the D switch of the NX8 transmitter, only the one mode is functional on the three position switch. Anyone know how to program this....I've watched all the videos but no joy

Go into Channel Assign > Channel 5 Gear: Assign Switch want for modes , Channel 6 Aux 1: Assign I button for panic mode. LED color on windshield is mode.

@@BDTennessee Didn't work. It will not allow me to activate the three modes (beginner, intermediate and advanced) built into the receiver no matter what I do. I will keep trying but this NX8 has a massive learning curve to use it to supplant the DXS the plane came with.....

@@TOURMANBOB so you went into channel assign and assign the switches? Then toggle switches at main menu connected to plane?

@@BDTennessee Problem was I had the plane set to aerilons and flaps instead of just normal mode. Once I changed back into normal mode, Aux 1 became available and I could assign things properly. These high end programmable transmitters have a high learning curve but I'm getting it done by watching dozens of different KZread videos including your excellent ones...my thanks again and I have subscribed and liked. As they say in Newfoundland..."bless you my son"....:))

I could not get flight mode 3 to show up when I tried this. Sure it’s something small I am doing wrong.

Some planes have 2 modes (Safe and AS3X) and other have 3 modes (Beginner/Intermediate/Expert)

@@fdwayne4 Draco uses a AR637TA receiver. Its setup through forward programming. If you have a mode where AS3X turned off it will show 2 modes and nothing on the 3rd position. I have a video like this one on those receiver that use Forward Programming.

Love your video`s but once again, super complicated. Too bad Spektrum can't simplify.
