Also this year we’ve been improving our curriculum to include more African-American history, so this is PERFECT! She was also the basis for the Netflix movie “Self-Made.” Thanks as always, JD. Keep up the great work! Hope you enjoy the SuperBowl!🍻

@@JB-vt5sz I’ve been teaching for 20 years, and I can tell you, this isn’t “following media” it’s teaching a more complete story of the American experience. Honestly, as someone who, until about ten years ago, was a “traditional” history teacher (meaning the history we’d all been taught) adding in all these stories makes the greater American story much broader and more complete. For example, ten years ago, I was considered “cutting edge” for teaching about Alice Paul, this year, my class has added in Ida B Wells in our study of the passage of the 19th Amendment. To give a more complete understanding of American history.

We all need each other and we need to treat others with kindness and compassion, especially the less fortunate. We are #StrongerTogether. After she made it with the help of her employees, she didn’t pull that ladder up behind her, she helped others become successful. What a wonderful story, very inspirational.

JD, Great job as always! This is the sort of Black success story that should be promoted with fervor during Black History Month. Ms. Walker worked WITHIN the White dominated US Capitalist system and succeeded through her own hardwork and determination. Hurrah for her! She didn't use violence rather her own sweat, toil and clearly high intelligence to succeed. She is the sort of person we should hold up as an example for all of Americans, Black and White, for her perseverance despite so many hurdles! I took away a lesson for all who blame the "system" for their lack of success and a role model for dreamers who will not allow their dreams to be defeated by self-pity. This is a story for all people, regardless of color, gender, education!

Fantastic video, you always include all histories no matter who they were. So much has been left out, or ignored due to racial conflict. I can only imagine what this women went through to get where she did. Any women at the time had no rights, so it would have been a humongous task to do what she did. I knew a little about her, but did not know about the movie. Thank you, I thoroughly enjoyed this.

I pride myself on, if not knowing, at least hearing of some one special in our past. So ashamed of myself on this madam. This channel was the best remedy for that, so thank you! Those old curling irons look like deadly weapons out of a horror flick, like something jason would use when hanging out at the lake. LOL

I wish you were able to be here when the weather was warmer to look into additional Indianapolis areas and not being so cold. LoL.... The major ethnic group in Indy were Germans. I'm hoping you might be planning on a stop at the Athenaeum. Great Restaurant and MUCH History there. I could lead you into many stops to learn the City's history. Enjoy your time here!

Not to in anyway take away from the story of a very gutsy lady ,the woman acting out that skit said lye soap is bad for your skin. Granted it is not as everyday as it was in that era and before. But lye soap is very effective in cleaning, not only clothes and household surfaces but you can wash a baby in it. The lye is neutralized in the saponification process. It has also been making a comeback. I like it. I had heard of Mrs. Walker before and a very inspiring woman. She had a great need and an idea of how to make something people wanted. That makes money. She did well.
